My Fiance's younger brother who is 9 yr old and disabled wears diapers still and im really concerned because his urine is so strong it makes me sick to my stomach for quite some time after i have had the misfortune of smelling it...i know there is definitely something wrong as we have a 2 yr old and her urine doesn't really smell ever. He is as i said disabled he has hydrocephalus and is also mentally handicapped as a result he takes anti-seizure medication but he's been on this medication for a very long time possibly since birth so how could his urine have started smelling so bad over the last two years [since their mother passed away] i have asked my fiances other brothers and they don't recall his urine always smelling so bad. Im on here asking because their father doesn't take good care of their 9 yr old brother he doesn't even acknowledge or say this might mean something is wrong with him...if anyone has any idea or similar situation please tell me i want to be able to go to him and suggest some ideas in the hopes hell take him to the doctor and find out because there is no way a 9 yr should have urine that smells so disgusting and worse than cat urine even if they take medication to prevent seizures i can't see it smelling this bad. *** I should have said he isn't sitting in his diaper b/c he has two other brothers me and an Aunt who pick up the slack. Trust me we have had discussions about calling cps however for the time being since we're all here we just pick up the slack we're all working to make sure he's taken care of. I just wanted to add that so people don't think he's just being ignored. Its just the truth is that my fiances mother died suddenlyof a heartattack actually 1 year ago and since then their father has been only concerned with his dating life and not being a father to any of his 4 children. So we all pick up the slack.

What can I do next?

Dehydration. Yeah, I'm thinking nobody is making sure he is drinking enough. Easy enough fix. But you have to make sure he has enough to drink over several days. This will increase the number of trips to the bathroom. If its better, he is likly going to be ok. If not, he may have an infection that could land in his kidneys. Off to the doc.

Strong urine is the result of not getting enough water during the day.

BUT in this illness you need to talk to a doc. From what I can remember the excess fluid on his brain drains into his stomach and comes out through his urine. This could be a symptom or a sign something is far more serious.

Since you said the father does not take good care of his 9 yo son I am wondering if the smell is so strong because the poor boy is sitting in wet diapers for hours? It will start to stink if he is not changed right away. Additionally, a 9 yo's bladder is so much bigger than a toddlers so there will be a lot more urine to smell.

Is he dehydrated. Pee stinks when you are dehydrated. What is he drinking? Coffee and teas and many other things can make your urine smell. As well, so does the medication.

You mention CPS and dad's dating life getting in the way of taking care of the child. Perhaps he will find someone that will love all of the kids. This isn't historic times where a young woman is brought to him to marry after the loss of his wife. He has to date.

Your fiance needs to find out what's going on and make sure his bro is getting the right care. If you need to call CPS to make it happen, do it.

I appreciate you bringing this to your finace's attention so that the 9 yr old can be properly cared for.

It could be that someone is leaving him wet for a long time. It could be the meds he is on. It could be dehydration.

I would certainly try to do what I could to get him checked out because he needs someone to properly care for him since he can't do it himself.

I suggest that judging the father is not helpful. Because the boy has several caretakers who are taking care of him CPS will not get involved. Everyone in the family is responsible for his care.

If the brothers want the father to be more involved then they need to approach this from a loving supporting way. Have they had a family meeting during which they decide who will do what? Have they looked for resources to help with his care?

I suggest that the brothers call the boy's doctor and ask for a referral to a social worker who can help find ways to make his care better. Also ask the doctor about the urine smell.

In the meantime increase his fluid intake to 8 8oz glasses/cups of fluid per day. It's my guess he's not getting enough fluids. If that doesn't get rid of the strong smell definitely consult a doctor.

Everyone has given you great responses. One odd possibility that I might add is that if he is eating asparagus, it will make urine smell horrid.

He needs to be seen by a doctor-sounds like he is not being properly hydrated-by that, I mean reverse osmosis drinking water (AquaFina) not tap water. He may have an infection without having a fever or pain or blood in the urine. I can't tell you how quickly kidneys can fail to function properly-especially in a child. If the father thinks caring for him now is debilitating-try, God forbid, dialysis a few time a week for the rest of his life. Get him some help-and get some agencies involved to help the father and the son with the care that the child needs-there are probably resources of which you are not aware-good luck.
