Frequent pneumonia with asthma? My daughter gets this! she's 6... BUT this regimen that our Dr put her in has TOTALLY given her freedom. First we kicked pneumonia to the curb with an albuterol Neb every 4 hours (even at night) for a couple days, then we did every six hours for a couple days... Along with that, she was given a liquid medicine that she took for the first five days (can't remember the name-sorry). Then we gave her the inhaler (albuterol) during daytime hours, then she just takes it as needed.

After she did 5 days of neb treatments, dr checked her out just to make sure it was working correctly. Her dr (I call her a dr, but she's a nurse practitioner) specializes in asthma and allergies. She's awesome. In addition to taking albuterol as needed (she maybe needs it once or twice a week now), We also give her a single puff of Qvar before she brushes her teeth at night. (qvar is preventative medicine)

My 6 year old also had to do a LOT of coughing up and spitting out while she had pneumonia. She was very persistent about getting it out of her system, so she was pro-active and cooperative. I have heard from other parents that their kids hate coughing up and spitting out mucus. BUT it is soo imperative!

I live in the opposite side of the country, but there ARE asthma specialists out there as well, maybe your nephew should go directly to them, and skip trying to find a regular dr for now. We haven't gone to a specialist because I'm so satisfied with her nurse practitioner.

I'm sorry, but shouldn't your doctor be referring you? I wouldn't think you would have to guess at which kind of doctor to see. I would call and ask, they may have affiliates that specialize in the problems who will take your insurance (medi-cal).

If it were me I'd get him off grains immediately. Grains deplete vit A, which is very important for mucosal tissues. Animal meats have a good source of beta carotene needed for children, that kids can only get it from animal fat.

Magnesium is said to be very good for Asthma. Magnesium citrate is the most absorbable, be careful, too high a dose will give loose stool. just cut back the dose.
High grain/carb/sugar diets deplete magnesium.
Manyt asthma issues are FOOD and vitamin deficiency related!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Allergy, asthma doctor is the route i would go. they should have a website for medi-cal that you can search for the dr. (they do here atleast). my asthma's pretty bad too. i was on albuterol, (inhaler and the machine with the liquid) singulair, and advair before i got pregnant. seems like a good combo. i feel for you. it's not fun for him :(

i would start with either a pulmonoligist or allergy asthma doc. Go to the link of the national jewish allergy asthma hospital and it should give you links to doctors certified by them. if not try the aafa website.that means the allergy asthma foundation of america. if not got to about.com and ask in the forum and they may have links to doctors allready.

This my daughters ENT at UCLA. We live in Vegas, but she drives out there to see her when she needs to. My husband had to see an ENT for his sleep apnea. She should be able to assist with the asthma. Otherwise, I would say a pulmonary doctor for the breathing parts.

I live in ct so I only know dr's here. I do work with a wellness company and they have all natural products that are clinically tested to help with asthma. Asthma attacks come from irritants like dust or odors. Definetely clean often to get rid of dust. Add sol-u-Mel to furnace to reduce dust mites in heating ducts! Also spray down bedding with it, we have a pound of dust mites in our bed each year. Many parents were able to remove their children from steroids after swithcing their products to toxic free ones. Many products have chemicals which are then in the air and he could have a reaction to them as well. Do not use Lysol- that one is really bad! I would love to share my knowledge with you. Contact me for more details!
Good luck and I hope he starts feeling better- I'd love to helP!
