5 Weeks Pregnant and Nervous About Progersterone Results

I found out I was pregnant last week, which was a surprise since we weren't going to try again until the summer. Obviously, my body had other plans. I have already had my blood drawn four times and will be going in for my first ultrasound on Friday at only 5 weeks 3 days. My current medication is:

20mg prednisone once per day
200mg prometrium 3 days a day vaginally
40mg Lovenox once a day
1 Neevo per day
1 Folgard per day
.8 mcg extra folic acid per day
1 baby aspirin
1 extra fish oil capsule
Vitmain B-100 Complex
Flintstone vitamin

I think that is it for now. My first beta was 116, jumped to the 300s 48 hours later, then jumped to the 900s 48 hours later and the last draw it was above 2000 48 hours later. My progesterone started at 14.9, went to 24, then 36.9 and the last draw dropped significantly to 13.9 even while on prometrium. The nurse said it was okay because progesterone fluctuates in pregnancy, but I told her I was concerned about such a drastic drop. I know they want the progesterone to be at least 15 in early pregnancy. She said not to worry and just come in Friday for the ultrasound.

Previous history is three 2nd trimester losses at 20, 24 and 20 weeks, as well as two 1st trimester miscarriages. I do have 3 healthy boys, 17, 6 and 3. We found out I have MTHFR A1298c, which is supposed to be the least problematic in pregnancy. I also had some minor immune issues, which I cannot remember offhand right now, but the doctor has me on prednisone as a precaution. I'm hoping it'sthe magic component needed to have a successful pregnancy again.

I just don't know what to expect with this pregnancy, especially since it was a surprise and we didn't start the medications before conception. I had been taking folic acid and vitamin B, so I'm hoping that will have helped. My main concern is the drop in progesterone. I've tried looking up information about it, but all I get is that normal levels in early pregnancy are between 9-47. If my
betas are looking good, should I not worry too much about the progesterone? Friday is only two days away but seems like a eternity!

Thank you,
Karen

Hi K.,
Here's a testimonial you may be interested in from a friend of mine, but before I add it, what's the reason for taking a baby aspirin? and Flintstones vitamins should have a warning label IMHO.

Pregnancy - Progesterone Level was at a 32

Carmen and I had always planned on having a family. However by January of 2005 we had gone through 2 miscarriages in the previous 3 year period. After talking with quite a few people, it's amazing how many people have either gone through a miscarriage or infertility OR KNOW SOMEONE who has gone through similar trials. It is an emotionally difficult thing to experience.

After our second miscarriage our Doctor tested different hormone levels. We found out that Carmen's progesterone level was low. Progesterone is a hormone that is CRITICAL during pregnancy....ESPECIALLY the first trimester. Once pregnant, a women's progesterone level needs to go UP to support the baby. Our Doctor explained that a "normal" level of progesterone is around 20. After Carmen's second miscarriage we had her progesterone level tested and it was only at 2! No wonder we were having problems. Our Doctor said that we needed to take a prescription progesterone supplement RIGHT AFTER CONCEPTION.

In February of 2005 we found out we were pregnant again. We were obviously very excited, but scared at the same time. When we found out, we were 4 weeks along and HAD NOT BEEN SUPPLEMENTING with progesterone because the pregnancy was a surprise. We went into the hospital trying not to think the worst.

When Carmen's levels were tested we found out that her Progesterone level was at a 32!! It went from a 2 to a 32! The ONLY difference was Shaklee supplements!! Both Carmen and I had been taking the Essential Foundation (Vitamin Strips and Protein) plus OmegaGuard.

We are believers that prayers from family and friends made a difference as well. But physically the ONLY thing different from our miscarriages to having our son was taking Shaklee's vitamins and protein. We thank God and Shaklee!!

Our son, London, was born November 2nd, 2005 and is in PERFECT health!! He's wonderful and an amazing blessing!! We believe that Shaklee has figured out what the human body needs. We view Shaklee as our life-long PARTNER for Health, Wellness, and Financial Independence. Trust them. We do. ~ Shawn, Carmen, and London

I had progesterone problems during my pregnancies. Common practice is to not worry to much about it. I don't think they even monitor it after the first trimester. I found a wonderful doctor that monitored it throughout the entire pregnancy. I supplemented with shots and towards the end had to take shots and an oral supplement. He said that the shots were the most effective. I know that doctor saved my youngest child's life. If it were me, I would demand that they up the supplement. No offense to any nurse out there, but I would ask to speak to the doctor.

I also have had losses at 16 weeks and 31 weeks before carrying my youngest child full term with some help. I carried three older children without any problems.

I sure will be praying all goes well.

I have never been through this, but my guess is you should try to not worry at all (easier said than done :-). Do what you can, follow your doctor's instructions and live the worrying to him/her. You won't accomplish anything by worrying, and baby needs you to be calm and relaxed.

Good luck, and trust your OB.

Understandable to be worried. I had numerous miscarriages and after speaking with a certified holistic doctor that was one of the things that I had to take. I had to use progesterone cream once a day during my pregnancy from 5 weeks until the end. A little on each wrist, prescription from the holistic doc; as well as taking organic fruit & veggie pills, liquid norweign fish oil, and a few other herbal supplements. After years of miscarriages we finally had our second child; our little angel. Our girls are 17 and 2. Now I know what to do and when I find out that i'm pregnant I will have to be on the same supplements, cream, and oils. When in doubt find a certified holistic doc or certified herbalist.
