Hi,
I have a great 4 month old son, who is only breastfed. He used to occasionally spit up. But as of yesterday after he wakes up in the morning and has his first feeding he begins spitting up about 10 times in the morning. And throughout the day 2 -3 times an hour. His behavior is no different, he doesn't seem to be uncomfortable or in pain. He is just constantly spitting up . More than normal. Any ideas. I'm concerned and very confused?

What can I do next?

My son had that though. He was cutting teeth.
If it goes on for an extended amount of time, I would have my pediatrician rule out reflux.
Try not to lay him down right after eating. give him an 1hr or so.

My daughter had this problem while I was breastfeeding her also. It turned out that I was eating spicy foods, that were just not setting well in her stomach. I remember one day I ate some of my daddy's hot salsa on some chips, and fed her later. It was horrible! She spit up everywhere...not only that but she screamed all night long...but before that she would just spit up constantly...I would consult your dr.

I would let your pediatrician know - he could have acid reflux or something else. I don't know if it's easy to tell the difference between vomit and spit-up when they don't eat solids.

Hello H.
Maybe it's an allergic reaction to something you're eating. My son was 3 1/2 months (bottle fed) and got dairy based formula instead of soy - needless to say within minutes, the sitter called me at work and I was on my way to the ER with a VERY dehydrated baby - nobody knew what was wrong. Until he was 18 months and came down with pneumonia.

My advice, keep a journal of what you're eating. See if he continues to spit up as often. Log changes....so you can follow them Have you added anything new to your diet?

Please let me know how things go!
Good Luck
L.

I'm an expert (actually have my own business- look at the business listng here lol)

& yes talk w/ your doctor to rule out pyloric stenosis
but if it's not that & there's no pain involved, there isn't really any medication for excessive spit up...

a food journal is an excellent idea!
it takes 3-4hrs for what you eat to make its way to your breastmilk, so if he is reacting to a protein (that's what they react to, proteins, it's rare to have actual lactose intolerance as a baby but that's a whole other post, lol) you can then try & figure it out...

projectile vomiting is the one to watch for --occurs in male babies often---- look it up-- but it doesn't sound like it yet at least---- also it could be what the mom is eating getting into the breast milk---- but make sure we aren't talking about projectile vomiting pyloric stenosis call your ped. to ask them------------- don't let it go on.

I have 2 possibilities- but I'm sure it's nothing to be worried about so don't be concerned!

First, my daughter was never much of a spit up kind of baby either and then she started seemingly overnight. It turns out, after I asked the ped. for his take on it- that we were giving her too much formula. Try letting him feed for a little bit less time and see if that helps. If it doesn't, just speak to your pediatrician for his/her opinion and they might suggest maybe reflux. But I think it is pretty common for them to spit up when they are getting too much food/formula- or if you've started him on cereal- that would be a cause also because they say not to start cereal until 6 months I think because of how sensitive their stomachs are.

Just talk to your pediatrician - they are great resources and he/she will probably solve your problem pretty quickly!

Hi H.,
That is about the time my daughter started full time spitting up. She has reflux...It is a pain. The Laundry is overwhelming. My ped is very conservative and as long as the baby is gaining weight you should have nothing to worry about. Check out the Orlando Regional Education Lactation Center but they will watch you feed. give you tips on how to feed upright and weigh the beby after feeding to see if he is getting too muh food or what. 1.321-the-baby...ask for Annette tll her L. sent you..just beware she may suggest a ped give you refulx meds...my advice dont medicate unles nessecary!!!!! deal with the spitting..i will pass

Hi H.!
My 3 year old had pretty bad reflux until 1 year old...
He was always spitting up (I still duck when he does so much as hiccup or burp!) but I read a ton of stuff on reflux and if I remember correctly that some kids can have reflux and not be in pain- I think it was called "silent reflux"...I could be wrong here but might be worth a google...
Also, as you are breastfeeding, it could be a sensitivity coming from something in your system (when breastfeeding I couldn't have any dairy or Alex would get worse...at 3 years though he's fine with dairy)...
Best wishes and good luck!
Kisses for the babe!

It might be a little indigestion, i agree, check what you are eating. And it might be that hes getting too much, lessen your feeding time, and see if that helps. Also, something might be piching his tummy.(too tight diapers/seatbelts, etc)

WATCH YOUR DIET, IF YOU SAY HE'S BREST FED, ALSO, PLEAS TRY AND KEEP HIM AWAY FROM BLOWING AIR. IF BABY'S ARE SUBJECT TO TO MNUCH AIR, THEY DEVELOPE CALIC, AND THAT WILL CAUSE AIR TO DEVELOPE IN THIER LITTLE BELLYS KEEPING THEM FROM HOLDING FOOD DOWN.
