2 Glasses of Wine a Night?

Hello,

I was recently talking to my partner and we were discussing how much is too much alcohol. We often open a bottle of wine and each have two glasses over the course of the evening. I'm wondering if this is excessive. We are thinking of making a conscious point to drink less, partly because of the calories! What are your thoughts on drinking?

TIA!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the feedback! We don't do it every night but it has become pretty routine (maybe 4 or 5 nights a week). We don't need it to unwind but we do enjoy it. I have never drank this much in my life and on paper it sounds crazy to me. We definitely don't get drunk (2.5 glasses over the course of 4 hours; I counted a bottle as 4 glasses but it is more like 5). We are going to cut back because we have gained some weight - at least we're happy, haha!

Doctors recommend only one 5 ounce glass a day/night, and that's for women without a family history of alcoholism. More than that has been indicated to support cancer growth. I don't think having two glasses on any given night is an issue, but it doesn't seem to be a good idea for every night.

What I would do for 2 glasses of wine...... I am 29 weeks pregnant and wine is my beverage of choice and I would love a glass now!

But I don't think 2 is too many. 1 is recommended and 2 is enjoyable. So, enjoy.

I think that if you drink wine every night, it's a habit. Rather than to drink less than two glasses per night, perhaps cut down on the number of days per week that you drink. I think you'll have a better result.

Not sure how big your wine glasses are but if they are the bigger ones, think about getting smaller ones so that you feel like you have had more and then your two glasses wont be as much.

Many people drink wine every night, mostly out of routine, or even with dinner. No one can tell you that you are drinking too much because you know what is good for you and what you want. If that helps you relax at night then have some wine.

Everything in moderation!

Yeah for the point about calories, I think if you cut back you might see some weight loss - then again it also matters how many calories overall you take in, and what your exercise regimen is. In terms of what is too much, I don't know - my husband and I both have several European friends, and their perspective is so different than the average American. Pretty much all of our friends from Eastern Europe (Bosnia, Belgrade and Poland), and other friends we have who are French drink daily. People my husband knows through work that are Italian - and he's hung out with him at work in Italy - drink daily. A glass of wine or 2...to them, it's not a big deal. And the funny thing is that alcoholism isn't a huge issue in any of those countries. Neither is obesity for that matter. It never ceases to amaze me how judgmental this country is about things like that. You know what - I say life is short, enjoy every minute of it.

Eat healthy, drink lots of water, don't mix tylenol or ibuprofin with your wine, exercise, and try not to worry about what other people think...or say they think. Everyone is an angel online anyway. ;)

My husband and i have red wine together a few times a week. Sometimes 3 glasses. We sit on the porch after dinner. On a weekend it can be four glasses. That is our big night out...lol! I was worrying about the calories also. I am seeing pounds sneak on. It doesnt help, my setting up cheese and crackers if it is a weekend :)

I am not one to judge. There are nights that i could take it or leave it. When i feel like i need it every night, i will worry. There are worse things i could do..... sung like Rizzo in grease....lol!

If you're worried about the calories, yes, drink less and that will help.

If you're worried about it being in excess, most people in Europe will drink this much every night and not give it another thought. If you're not drunk, I don't think that it's a problem.

My husband and I used to open a bottle a night 3 or 4 times a week when we were first married. So funny you asked this because I was just thinking today what lushes we were. Though you may make 4 pours out of a bottle, there are technically 5 units of alcohol in a bottle of wine, so you each are getting 2.5 units of alcohol when you split a bottle. I got down right plump and had to rid myself of the habit. One thing that helped was switching to beer. easier to open only one and for my husband to have one without me and me not be tempted by an open bottle of wine. Alcohol is really deceptive. Its so fabulous and takes the edge off, but as you use it, it has less and less of an effect, so a person is left with the decision to drink a little more, or comes to the conclusion, that alcohol doesn't do much for them, and drinks less. Right now I keep it to two drinks a week because I'm trying to loose weight. Splitting a bottle a night excessive? Sounds like a bad habit to me, but just shy of excessive.

It's only a drinking problem when it creates problems for you or other people.

In other words, if you enjoy 2 glasses of wine each night, and you're not getting loopy from them (your intent isn't to get drunk), then I think it's fine.
Do what you enjoy.

To me, one glass a night every night is a lot. Two glasses on weeknights is a lot. But me husband used to think it was ok to have a glass of something a night. It didn't bother me until I realized he wouldn't wind down until he poured that glass. I wondered if he can do it without it. I asked him to stop it, and that drink one glass on friday night and saturday night but other nights should be off limits. He agreed, and he hasn't done it in years.

If you are trying to lose weight you should consider that the body cannot store alcohol so it is the first thing it burns....instead of fat! So metabolically it is also bad for the diet-not just calories. That being said-for just pleasure I don't feel that is excessive at all.

My feeling: if you feel this is excessive for you, then follow your instincts.
We often have a drink (or sometimes two) at night; I factor a lot of things into this: what's my day like the next day, how I'm feeling, am I eating while I am drinking (which is a must for the second glass), and how I feel overall. I don't drink every night, either. But weekends (Fri, Sat) we are more likely to indulge than other nights. And not to the point of being intoxicated. (I'm a slower drinker and I'm known to nurse a beer for hours... to my husband's disgust.)

How big are your glasses? :o)
If it is not effecting your behavior (i.e. your partner and you aren't then fighting after the 2 glasses each). Or your functionality (no hangovers, calling into work, etc.) Then it seems fine to me.
I don't think a number is the answer to the question "how much is too much?" The result is. If two glasses gets you tipsy every night, might want to cut it to one, if not drink your two, or substitute with a martini or vodka soda to reduce calories.

IMO two glasses of wine is not excessive, regardless of what day of the week it is. Looking @ it from a calorie stand point its probably not the best thing so maybe just have one glass a night.

As long as you dont need it to get through the night and its just something you enjoy having @ the end of your day then go for it.

My DH works 3 different shifts that rotate every month, when he is on days (gets home @ 3:30pm) we have a beer or two almost everynight with dinner or after the kiddos go down.

Wow, that's a big question :)

The matter of concern is not whether or not it is excessive, the question is do you rely on it to cope in a way that is unhealthy. An alcoholic is still an alcoholic even after they have not had a drink for decades. It's about the reliance & addiction, not the consumption or the amount.

You can also look at it this way, 2 drinks is enough to push most women's BAC over the legal limit (of course, it varies by weight & time).

All that being said, 2 doesn't sound excessive to me. And if you are worried about calories, have a shot instead :)

i dunno. it's probably on the high side, but not a problem IF it's not a problem, if you know what i mean. do you feel you can honestly assess that? from the calorie perspective, cutting back to one is a good idea.
i'm probably not the right person to ask. wine is an occasional treat for me, and two glasses would have me pretty much useless.

If you need it to calm down or unwind, its too much and puts you in a precarious position with becoming addicted. You might want to ask yourself the tough questions. DO I need it? Am I just thirsty? If so, can I drink anything else?
If you are relying on the effect of the wine, then it could become a problem.
Personally, I don't think its worth it.

Are you two finishing off a bottle of wine every night? If so, you're drinking a 1/2 bottle, not two glasses. There are 8 "glasses" of wine in a bottle. If you are finishing off a bottle every night, then that means you are drinking 4 glasses a night, and 3 1/2 bottles of wine a week.

Recent studies a bit cloudy with woman and wine. 1 glass showed benefits, but two showed some risks. Of course, further studies are needed...but it's shown anything more then 1 glass of wine a night for women does more harm then good.

If you're asking my personal opinion, I find 2 glasses of wine a night excessive. I think people...whether they realize or not, or will admit it or not...rely on those two glasses. I'm not saying in an alcoholic way, but they find themselves needing it to calm down. I think people should have other ways, besides alcohol to relax and cope. If you think about it, no one NEEDS any wine.

Like I said, that's just a personal opinion.

Hubby and I were in the habit recently of one glass of wine many nights before bed. Thurs, Fri, Sat could sometimes be two glasses (not typically all three though). Honestly, I began really questioning our habit. I'd feel guilty in the morning sometimes. Wondering why I should feel guilty after only one glass, but still feeling like I should cut the habit. But by most evenings I was really looking forward to that glass of wine after the kids went to bed. DH works many long hours, so was often our only little piece of time together, which I really wanted to relax/enjoy/celebrate.

In the last month, I've began making a serious effort to lose weight and get back in shape. Now I'm cutting out the nightly wine strictly due to calories, and that it is so bad on the metabolism, which is what motivates me not to have wine nearly as often. We still enjoy a glass every once in awhile, but now it is much less often.

I guess it all depends on how much wine is in each glass. I don't consider two 4 to 6-oz glasses of wine each night to be excessive but you would be better off just drinking one glass of wine each night from a health standpoint.

Whether or not it's excessive depends on how those two glasses effect you, and whether you could skip them, or keep it to one glass without an internal battle.

I've always been kind of a lightweight when it comes to drinking, so two glasses can have me pretty silly. So for ME it's say that was too much to be drinking every night. My parents, however, each regularly have two glasses or even three over the course of the evening (cooking, chatting and meal) if all of us are home visiting, and probably a glass a night when it's just to two of them.

The calories are probably a good reason to cut down, but if drinking less requires making a real point or effort, it's probably time to cut down anyway.

Drinking less will definitely cut down calories. It is amazing how many calories are consumed through liquids alone.

I believe it is good to pull back if you have to have those 2 drinks every night to unwind. Wine is a chemical and can become very habit forming if you don't watch it. It soon becomes necessary to have those two glasses to unwind, relax, cope with stresses etc.

If you are basically splitting a 500ml bottle between the two of you throughout the course of the evening, then I don't think it is that big of a deal. I just wouldn't drive anywhere after. However, if you want to make a conscious choice to consume less, whether for caloric reasons or otherwise, then I would each have one pour, then save the rest of the bottle for the next night. :)
Cheers!

For me personally, I don't drink nightly. A couple of times a week would be PLENTY. :)

2 things - are you drinking the wine solely to get buzzed or mainly because you just like wine? And are you drinking so much that either of you are unable to drive or take care of the kids if there was an emergency at night? That's how I judge if I'm drinking too much or too often.

That would be too many calories for me, but it doesn't seem excessive by any means. I'm more likely to have one glass of wine two or three times a week, but I've never been a huge drinker.

As long as you don't *need* the wine to relax, I don't see a problem... but again, you could cut back just for the calories. How about making wine spritzers? I frequently do that at parties... white wine with sparking water or some form of flavored water. That way I can keep drinking but don't consume as much alcohol or calories.

I personally think 2 glasses of wine per night is excessive. That's 14 glasses per week, or roughly 3 bottles per week. One person drinking 3 bottles per week is excessive...and I am no prude, I'm about to enjoy a glass myself. When one starts drinking that much, I think it becomes a slippery slope between was is normal, or acceptable. As an aside, I have a close family member who was recently diagnosed with throat cancer (one big cause is drinking). He was not a heavy drinker or smoker, this was totally out of the blue. My point is we never know what's going on inside our bodies...drinking too much contributes to a whole host of problems...we never know what we will be susceptible to. If I was you, I would cut down to one per night, and even cut down a bit from there.
