Zantac Use in Infants for Acid Reflux

I am almost 100% positive that my 4 mo. old experienced a side effect to Ranitidine (Zantac) a few weeks ago. She had about 9 episodes of Nystagmus (rapid uncontrolled eye movements) for one day until the med wore off that evening. She was monitored in the hospital for 24 hrs., but they would not say that it was the medication that caused the Nystagmus. She didn't have this problem before and hasn't had a problem since we stopped the Ranitidine. I have found info. online about this being a possible side effect and was wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this (in infants or adults)? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I had heard about the sea salt thing that Karen had mentioned too! I'd try that!
My daughter had reflux very bad and up until about a year ago was on prevacid. She's almost 5 now and what we do for her is give her orange juice and she doesn't have any more trouble! It is exactly what the gastrointerologist said to avoid but it works! Someone had told me that usually people with reflux don't make ENOUGH stomach acid so adding something to their diet that is acidic actually helps. Some people take apple cider vinegar every day, so that's another option.
Good luck! I hope you can find something that works for you! I hate having my kids on medicine because they CAN cause reactions like that and it's very scary! Let us know what happens! :o)

I haven't experienced it, although my son was on zantac. But if I were you, I'd go back to your pediatrican and ask for a different med. There are other options for infant reflux that are just as effective - or even more effective. Why chance giving it again?

I have a doctor that taught that a lot of babies have acid reflux and it can be remedied by taking in sea salt to create more acid...it worked wonders for my daughter from age 2 weeks old. I use premier pink salt....it sounds funny, but it's a natural solution that actually works. If you're nursing you can take the salt in and the baby will get it in the breastmilk. If you have questions send me a message!

Hello Brianne,

Have you considered trying out a pediatric chiropractor? I ask this because colic is often diagnosed as reflux, and chiropractic treatments have been shown to be highly effecacious with colicy, spitting up babies. Our son began going to a pediatric chiro when he was 2 weeks old and I asked for lots of information. I've read several clinical studies from journals of chiropractic medicine and I'm excited to share, because colic is such a difficult challenge for so many babies and parents. Worth a try, in my opinion. Especially if the actual medicine is causing such a side effect. That's very scary to me!

Similar to another poster, my son was on zantac (generic brand of it) until about 11 months of age. He didn't have the symptoms you described. Good luck with getting an answer for your daughter!

Brianne,
I'm so glad you posted again. I was just thinking about you yesterday, but I lost your contact information. I had intended to get back to you, but I have been so busy with the end of school and graduation.
I will go up this week and talk to our pharmacist about this. I know he will be honest with me about anything if he has seen it. So far, from what I have gathered, they usually list it in a category as an involuntary motor disturbance. They can put that title on a lot of different things.
I undersatnd that your doctor can't promise that this was or wasn't the problem, but personally, I would go with your gut. It had the standard MO of occuring while she was on the medicine, and stopping when you quit. The only way to know for sure would be to give her the meds again, but I wouldn't do that!
I will try to get more info and get back to you in a few days. (I would work on it sooner, but with Memorial Weekend and everything, we are going to be super busy and our pharmacist will be closed.
Has your doctor recommended any other medication to treat your daughter's reflux?

We did use this for my son until he was about a year old for infant reflux but we had no problems with him taking it. So sorry to hear about your baby. Hope you find the cause.

Acid reflux comes from the body being to acidic. You can naturally get rid of it by adding more veggies to the diet and alkaline water. If you need some help email me and I will give you more info.

Have a great weekend.
