Mz Kitty - Obama's campaign has redesigned the flag and is selling it for $35 each..

Kimberly - Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands are not the only Territories the U.S. has...you do realize that the stars on the flag represent the STATES, not territories, right? We would have to add:

American Samoa
Guam
Puerto Rico
U.S. Virgin Islands and
The Northern Mariana Islands...

The Obama campaign is selling it as a FLAG...just like they did with his mug shot/face replacing the stars a few years ago...it's NOT just a painting...I posted that link because I knew any of the liberals on here would roll their eyes if I used the Fox one. So to be clear - it is a FLAG they are selling for $35. Not just a painting - but a FLAG. Obama's campaign released a flag sever

Funny how people get their panties twisted with a simple question!!! I NEVER said that Obama was doing it...I said his CAMPAIGN is doing it...for money...

My question was WOULD YOU BE BOTHERED IF THE UNITED STATES FLAG CHANGED??? Yes. I included a link to what Obama's campaign is doing for promotion...as an example...no where have I said OBAMA IS CHANGING THE FLAG...did I? wow...someone needs to unwind and chill...maybe one or two????

It's a logo. I don't know anyone who would just stand by and watch the flag change, and that has nothing to do with what political party you support.

Please show me the link to the FLAG that is being sold because everywhere I looked I saw a PRINT. Which is very different. And why aren't you upset about the heart shaped print? Does that look flag like enough for you?

I think that we are so far in the weeds in this country that it's not even funny and not because of the person in office. The political infighting is just ridiculous.

You are misinformed! Not sure why you are making a big deal about this without the facts! It's a logo of the US to indicate we are not blue states and red states, but one country. There aren't 7 stripes, for example. Fox "News" has had to retract a percentage of its reports, has had to apologize outright for a few incorrect reports, and has had numerous independent fact-checking organizations call them misleading and outright liars. You should get your news from independent and bipartisan (or non-partisan) sources!

People who make claims like this wind up inadvertently looking a little silly. Even people on Mamapedia who quote lots of websites and post links don't always check the veracity of those sites. They spread half-truths and misperceptions that only muddy the debate, get some people outraged and other people laughing, and distract from the real issues. We're all busy and we don't always take the time to verify things, and it's awfully easy to find anything on the internet and use it to bolster our positions.

No one's changing the flag, no one's every suggested it, and it's totally a non-issue.

The flag has been used in fashion for 50 years, sometimes tastefully and sometimes not. It's been used in art, in logos, in political signage, in jewelry, and much more. Suddenly now you're making it an issue? What's really got you going on this?

Cheryl,
No one's trying to change the flag. This is just an image, a logo. ALL politicians incorporate American images into their campaigns, merchandise and literature.
These kinds of "news" stories are meaningless, and they distract from REAL issues, IMO :(

Seriously? This is news? This is an issue how?

It's a logo, nothing more and nothing less. He is using a logo that looks like a flag. You can call it a flag. He is not calling it an American Flag. How many countries have flags that are similar to each other? Quite a few actually. How many logos do you see that resemble national flags? I've seen many. I have a flag with a Jolly Rogers and one with a Peace sign, do these compete with or replace the American Flag? Are they any less a flag? Really?

Is this really what people have devolved into? Is the Us vs Them gotten this ridiculous?

If this is a question about the real, actual American Flag. President Obama is not a person stupid, disrespectful or ignorant enough to change it to something like his logo. How absurd an assumption. If another state were to be added, then yes, another star should be added and there may be some "re-jiggering" to make them all fit and look aesthetically pleasing. This is perfectly fine. We used to have a circle until they no longer fit that way. The 13 stripes aren't going to change because you can never change the count of the original colonies.

Sorry to get flippant but it floors me that this is what people bicker over.

If the ACTUAL flag changed (beyond adding stars)? Yep. No question.

This is just political artwork. Just like when W's FACE was plastered all over 'official' type stuff (money, flags, etc.) as part of his campaign. Even if I didn't despise the vast majority of former President's politics... his face aesthetically gives me the willies.

The flag is, and always has been, up for grabs. It's worn as clothing (which I personally hate, esp. when it's the real flag being sat on). Altered into artwork (like the O flag in your link, or as a background, or stripes replaces with vignettes, or stars replaces, or, or, or) . Used as 1001 "pieces" of things (stars & or stripes) in various motifs.

I think the writers take on that picture is far reaching. The stripes are orange not red and not even 13 of them.

Hi, Cheryl:
The American Flag is a symbol of our Patriotism. When the British tried to bomb Fort McHenry in Maryland to take back control of the United States, they were unsuccessful. The American flag was seen as a symbol of freedom from tyranny. The war of 1812, was the second attempt by Britain to take control of our country. The American flag symbolizes our freedom/liberty or Republic of the people, by the people and for the people.

It is a symbol of the American people. Obama's flag is a symbol for OBAMA not the American people. If the people allow his flag to fly, the American people will be under a Socialist government.
God Bless America.

At first I was all ready to get fully riled up about the gall anyone would have to change our flag (aside from rearranging stars or something to make room for a new state like Puerto Rico). The article says it's a painting for sale that is (obviously) a campaign ad more or less.

To answer your question, though, if they DID try to alter it in any way that did more than just add stars for states, I would be VERY bothered. As it is, I'm with the author that it's pretty darn arrogant, and it irritates me, but, I'm not going to vote for him, so that's all I can do about it.

Why does this surprise you? Not to be blunt, but that man is an ignorant fool and wants nothing more than to stand in line with the radicals and burn our flag - isn't he already doing that by tearing apart our country and the people within?

He literally makes me sick.

But yes, if the flag changed aside from adding more stars (if that were to ever happn), I'd be hot. It has changed so many times over history, but only adding stars to represent the states as they gained their stateship. Obama wants to destroy all that America is...so I am not the least bit surprised he (or anyone in his campaign) was foolish enough to think that was a good idea.

This isn't an attempt to change our flag.
It would not bother me if it changed.
Heck, I think "America the Beautiful" would make a better anthem than "The Star Spangled Banner".
Our current anthem is a nice poem set to the tune of a drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven" and it's a difficult tune for most people to sing well.

Even that crazy, socialist, Muslim wouldn't consider changing our flag until he gets re-elected. Then he's gonna turn our country into a commie, welfare state where all the rich people have to give their money away to the lazy 47% of us freeloading off the government.

All things change but the question is how they change - is for the better or worse.

I read both the link and The Stir and so I can easily say well this is just something selling and doesn't mean the flag will be changed. But if it is changed like this with his champaign logo well you can't get much more wrong than that. As for the statement on The Stir, that this flag represents the united states and not the blue states and red states. How ridiculous. The current flag completely stands for the united states, each star is a light, a state in the union, each stripe of red the blood that was shed to gain independence. The red state, blue state is a relatively new contemporary concept of the media made to insite people's competive nature and base natures. So to act like this new idea of the flag unites the uniion is just more side stepping and hoping no one notices.
