Hi everyone,
I've searched all over this wonderful website, and I haven't seen anyone mention this hospital. Has anyone delivered there? Was it a good or bad experience? Does this hospital have a good reputation? I am new to the Chicago area and your input is greatly appreciated!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the responses! We went on a NCH tour last night, and I feel very comfortable with the idea of delivering there. (Their new OB facility apparently will not be open until 2009 or 2010, though.) Thanks again.

Northwest Community Hospital is a wonderful hospital. My sister's mother in law used to head up their nursing staff (until she retired). I've only heard really good things about NCH. Good luck and congrats!

Hi Becky,

I delivered (via c-section) both of my kids (now 4 and 2 1/2) at Northwest Community. I have only good things to say! Everyone in Labor & Delivery was wonderful! They were kind, patient, understanding and responsive to the needs of me and my kids. I also know they have a good reputation. Others I know who have delivered there also had great experiences. Good luck!

Congratulations, Becky!

I delivered my first at NCH in January of 2007 and had a great experience. Everyone, from the Emergency Room where I was admitted at 5 am because my water bag broke at home earlier to the Labor and Delivery Unit whose nurses were understanding and professional, to the Mother Baby Unit where they taught me how to take care of my newborn while they took care of me, to the Lactation Consultants who advised me on nursing my baby, made my stay memorable. I was in a semi-private room to recover from my C-Section, but the the other bed was empty. So, my husband was able to stay overnight once and my sister, who came out from Maine, as well. The hospital was very accomodating. And now they have networked with the Childrens Memorial Hospital, so any neonatal issues will be handled by the very best! I believe they were planning on opening up a separate building just for Maternity Services where each mother will have a private room. Not sure if that has happened yet.

You would be choosing a very reputable hospital to deliver your first baby.

I delivered my son there & loved it. Nurses (all but 1) were so nice & friendly. The only "complaint" I'd have is at the time they only had a limited # of private rooms. I didn't get one so my husband couldn't spend the night. I am pretty sure they have added on since then & have many more private rooms. They ring a bell each time a baby is born, which is neat. I got there at 7cm & progressed to 8.5 in 20 min. I said I wanted an epidural & they pulled the anesthesiologist out from someone else & told him to do me right away b/c time was running out (I don't think he literally left another woman, he just squeezed me in). It was great that they did that!

Hi Becky!

For the last 14 years or so Northwest Community Hospital has been my hospital of choice. We LOVE it! Needless to say we've never had a bad experience there. And yes, I have delivered there as well.

My youngest son was born two months early, and although it was a life changing experience; I must say that everyone at Northwest Community did their best to make me more comfortable and calm my fears. I went in at about 3 a.m. and ended up having an emergency c-section. And I really have to admit that all the doctors and nurses were exceptional. They really listened to me and took good care of me.

Because my son was premature he ended up having to stay at the hospital. Knowing that I didn't want to leave him, my doctor and nurses did everything they could to prolong my stay. You could tell they really cared (if they didn't they really knew how to fake it) *smile*. My son went on to spend 2 weeks in the NICU. My husband and I (as well as other family members) were there around the clock. And once again, everyone was great.

I could go on and on about countless experiences that I've had there, but I won't. And if you have any questions please feel free to ask. It's a great hospital that has won countless awards, and they are always up to date on the latest technology.

One last thing: One night I woke up and thought I was having a heart attack. Living in Elk Grove Village, of course we went to the closest hospital which is Alexian Brothers. Upon arriving there in the ER a guy asked me why I was there. I explained to him about my chest and back pain. He then proceeded to tell me that they were busy that night, and it was going to be at least a 3 hour wait. Needless to say I was SHOCKED. At that point my husband attempted to locate whoever was in charge of the ER. I did eventually get seen, but the whole experience just reinforced the fact that for us nothing has compared to Northwest Community.

Good luck and congratulations!
Lynn

I echo what everyone has said about NCH -- Love it! I had my son about 21 months ago and they were AWESOME! I was also in at 26 and 27 weeks pregnant for pre-term labor and they were accomodating, understanding and compassionate. We have since moved, but will be driving the bit extra to deliver our second there.

Also, if you're interested, I took a prenatal aqua class there and loved it. It was nice to be in a class with other pregnant women and to have the class tailored. I also had a mani and pedi at the spa at the wellness center so if you're so inclined, treat yourself there too! The facilities are clean and bright and fantastic.

Staff was great, food was good, classes (prenatal education and exercise) were fun and the whole experience was positive and memorable. And I do love that they are affiliated with Children's.

Becky,

All three of my siblings were born there (I was born at Holy Family). My friends have delivered there. I grew up in Arlington Heights and I've never heard anything but good things about them. Actually, my sister was born 16 years ago (today) and I was 19 at the time. They allowed my other sister (17 at the time) and I to be in the delivery room with my mom for the birth of our sister. It was awesome. Everyone was so nice to us and accomodating.

Congrats to you!

Hello and congrats Becky!
I delivered my daughter there also 10 months ago. We had a great experience. Everyone was so kind, gentle, understanding and patient with my husband and me. The staff/nurses were accommodating to my husband. He stayed with me every night I was there and would bring him meals if they had some left over, without him asking. They were very nice to family and friends that visited. I had a c-section and the nurses were always there to help in anyway. I also heard it had a great reputation from many of my friends that have delivered there, so I purposely got doctors (who were also fantastic!) that associated with the hospital and would drive almost half an hour away to deliver there, even though there is a different hospital closer to me. The classes and groups offered are so helpful. My husband and I plan on using the doctors and hospital again in the future. I hope this helps. Good Luck!
And to help answer the statement below about the seperate building for Maternity. Yes, they are building a seperate section just for maternity. There, they will have even more rooms and much more to offer moms and families. I am so excited about this! It sounds like it will be great! I think it should be done either this summer or next summer.
