My 7yo son's class is going on a field trip this week and they are required to dress like children would in 1890. We were given a list of suitable clothing and items, but being new to the area I have no idea where to get some of them from. Where can I find overalls (or suspenders) and an appropriate hat?

Thank you everyone! I went to Goodwill and found a straw hat and one pair of suspenders. The suspenders are the type that need buttons to attach to pants, so I sewed some old looking buttons on a pair of jeans. I also took an old white button down shirt and removed the collar. Looks good!
I'm not sure if you are looking to buy or rent, but you can rent it at The Mad Hatter in Auburn. I'm sure they would have something like that. They have thousands of costumes for rent. Oh how fun. I remember when my daughter did this type of trip. We went to the local Goodwill ad found all kinds of things to mix and match. Go on line and look for pictures of kids during this era. It is fun and educational too plus you will have a better idea of what you will need by seeing the pictures. Sears has overalls if you want to buy them new. A flannel shirt or just a plaid shirt with high water jeans and a rope belt would look good too. If you don't have the high waters, roll up the pant legs with a straw hat.

Your son must be doing a living history field trip. You don't have to do too much really. Just have him wear a pair of jeans and a flannel shirt. You could tie a hemp type rope around his waist. Make sure you have him wear leather shoes of some sort. I would take a look at the local Goodwill or Salvation Army stores for shoes and a hat if you don't already have something he can wear. Also, be sure when you pack his lunch that you don't put any plastic or juice boxes that type of thing in it. The lunch should make an attempt at authenticity.
This field trip is great, and he will love it.
thrift stores sometimes have "costume corners", but like the other poster said, jeans with button fly, rope or leather belt with metal buckle, leather shoes, and flannel type shirt and a hat are perfect. the mad hatter in auburn is expensive. i rented a gypsy costume for my son there this year and it cost me 60 bucks. i will never rent there again. there is a lady here in auburn who runs a costume rental her name is joyce silva, i warn you she can be a little short tempered, dont let that put you off, she is cheap cheap cheap. her number is ###-###-#### good luck and have fun!! oops i forgot to add that we packed our lunches in cloth drawstring bags and i wrapped salami and cheese dried fruit crackers in wax paper tied with string we also packed an apple or orange.
