When Is It Safe?

Hi there! I just had a beautiful baby girl on the 26th. We were released from the hospital within 24 hours an account of of both doing so well. Labor was smooth and no complications, only lasted three hours and was natural w/no stiches. Baby got a 10 on APGAR. All is PERFECT :) I feel great and am already up and about. My question is when can I safely work out. I only gained 18 pounds and worked right up until labor ( at work when I left for hospital). My job required me to be on my feet between 6 and 10 hours a day walking, so now that I am off work for 6 weeks I am going a little stir crazy. I don't want to over do it but would like to have some activity.

What can I do next?

Use your bleeding as your guide. if you exercise and start to bleed more then you over did it. once you are done bleeding go for it but also realize that you may need to keep an extra couple of pounds on to keep your milk supply up. this wasn't a problem for us but i know it can be for some people.

Hey SuperWoman, do what your body will let you. I've seen people at the gym as early as the next day!

Put the baby in a stroller and take her for a walk. Ask your doctor before doing any more than that.

Oh, and congratulations on the new little one!

I agree do what your bady tells you. It maybe as simple as packing up the girls and walking the mall for a mile or two ( which is twice around the mall perimeter inside). Once it is finally warmer out side take the walking out side and then when you feel up to it hit the gym or whatever. There is no time period when it comes to this sort of thing. since you didnt have stitches or anything you dont have to worry about infection or anything so you will be fine!! Congrats!!!! I am due in my mind anyday now but really have a few weeks left to go!! So the fact you have to umf to go means you should go

walking would be perfectly safe now, but I would wait a couple weeks before anything more strenuous. I wouldn't even walk a long distance right now. You may feel great, but your body is not close to being back to normal right now, and you don't want to push it. It could cause cramping and make your bleeding worse. I would wait the full 5-6 weeks before any "real" exercise. Obviously, the weight loss won't be much of an issue for you, so I wouldn't worry too much right now, just try to relax.

Also I've heard that If you work out too much it can cause your milk to become more acidic, So I guess watch your baby for cues too.
