I asked my pediatrician this question & he said that dairy products, like yogurt is different that giving them straight milk because of the homogenazation process. So, in a nutshell, you can give yogurt before you can give cow's milk because the yogurt is more refined. Call your doc to double check.

The yogurt is safe! You can even double check with your doc.... if you're talking about YoBaby yogurt (which is the only yogurt I know of that's safe for babies), it is completely organic and lactose free and poses absolutely no threat to your baby's health. If you're still wary of it, start out with the plain yogurt (the blue ones) and then work your way into the other flavors. I started giving it to my son when he was 8 months old (that's when I found it) and he's done great on it. No allergic reactions or side affects or anything like that. I've tasted it myself and it's actually quite good! If you look in the different baby magazines they usually all have coupons for $1 off the yogurt.

Hi there, I started giving my first son (22 month) yougurt when he was 9 month old and milk instead of formula at 10 month. There were no problems of any kind. I have a 3 month old now and will probably give him yougurt when he turns 7 month old

I really don't think I would give a 6 month old yogurt, even if it says for babies. I love Cream of Wheat, etc. But I would not do dairy until at least 10 mos. The usual recommendation is 12 mos, but after my second child, I tried it at 10 mos and he had no problem with it. The main thing is to start with veggies before fruits, and to get the most nutrition and variety so they get all kinds of vitamins. I introduced a new veggie every couple weeks, starting with green veggies, etc. If they seem too hungry, I definitely add more rice cereal and/ or cream of wheat to the menu. P.S. Once they first try a french fry, hot dog, or chicken nugget, that's all they want!! Avoid this!!

The reason they want you to hold off is also due to possible milk allergies---so I'd wait until 1 year.

I had the same confusion with my son but asked my pediatrician and he said that yogurt, cheese all of it is fine for babies...even if it is made with dairy...the confusion is that actual milk isn't bad for babies, it is just that they are not able to really digest the enzyme properly in the milk....but that cheese and yogurt have added benefits that the actual milk alone does not. At least that is how I understood it. My son loves the yo baby yogurt, I just have to be careful WHEN I give it cause it has a lot of sugar and it winds him up before bed.

Supposedly yogart is different (according to the big book I have you can start them at about 6 months). My 8 month old loves it. Though, I don't recommend the Yobaby brand - it is SOOO watery. I usually buy a big container of Alta Dena (that's what I like) and add fruit to it for him. Or the Yoplai Kids brand is really good for on the go, and has a very similar nutritional content as the baby.

You are right, do not start dairy until she turns one. When she does, though, Stoneyfield Farms makes a great yogurt called "yo baby" which is made with whole milk and has cereal and fruit in it.

i started w/ solids at 5 months..oatmeal b/c my son had bad reflux..not rice b/c rice constipates..yogurt i waited til i think around 9 or 10 months..i did use baby jarro-dopholus (sp?) sometimes when he seemed to have some tummy problems..
but yeah 6 months is recommended ..something about their guts are still open until then so it's best to wait til 6 months to start any solids if you can.

I wouldn't be too worried. I started my kids on small increments of milk, beginning at the age of 7 months. So unless your child has a problem with lactose tolerance, your child shouldn't have a problem, as long as you start small.

The problem with dairy is the lactose and dairy proteins. Yogurt has the proteins but not the lactose. I'd hold off a few more months, but that's just me.

Hi Q.,
They have a lot of things out there that babies shouldn't have. You should stay away from wheat and dairy and soy for over a year so the little one can develop the ability to digest them. If they are fed certain foods too soon then they will create an allergy to the foods. Also, you should stay away from meats. You can give him other complete proteins that are easier for them to digest (rice and beans etc.) Lots of veggies and fruits, rice cereals and so on. Do a little investigating on easily digested foods. I have learned so much more as my kids have gotten older, which I wish I had known sooner.

The lactose in yogurt and such is processed differently than it is in plain cow's milk, so actually yogurt is a wonderful first food to give to a baby.

the baby yogurt (yobaby) they can have from 8mo up (is what my babies pediatrician told me). i gave my baby girl that around the 8month mark and she was just fine. if you wanted to try it i would suggest a flavor she already knows like the apple or pear.

My understanding is that they should not have milk until one year, but that other dairy products are okay. I started my son on yogurt when he was about 8 months old as a bedtime snack. He did great with it and it helped him sleep much better with a good snack.

Hi, Q..

My daughter is almost 9-months-old and I asked her pediatrician why yogurt was on the okay list of foods because I thought that dairy wasn't recommended due to allergies.

Her pediatrician said that yogurt is fine. People often misunderstand milk being on the list of foods not to give a baby under a year old as a potential allergen, however, he said that milk is not a potential allergen, only if you are aware of a lactose intolerance in your family.

He said milk typically appears on the list of what not to give because people often assume if you can give yogurt, a dairy product, to a baby, then you can give milk. He said that doctors would prefer that a baby stay on breastmilk or formula until they are at least a year old because milk itself doesn't have all the nutrients a growing baby needs. Yogurt is an excellent source of protein and can be introduced as an additional solid food.

So, yogurt is fine to give a baby. However, just don't start to give your baby milk to drink. Continue to keep giving your baby breastmilk or formula in addition to the solids (and now yogurt) you have been giving.

My daughter has been eating Stoneyfield Farms' Yobaby yogurt with fruit. The first time she tried it at 8 months, she loved it. Now, it's a midday snack as well as a treat before bed. She has had no ill effects. Just remember to go slowly. I gave her about a half a container over the course of five days. Now, she finishes a whole 4 ounces.

If you have any doubts, you should check with your baby's pediatrician. Good luck. I hope this helps.

I have been reading that it's not that our babies should not have dairy before 1 yr but that they don't want moms (dads) switching to milk since it does not have all the necessary vitamins, etc like breast milk or formula that is needed for at least the first year of life.

Yogurt is different than milk. Its true, you can start yogurt at 6 months if the pediatricians says its okay. I make my 6 month old babies food from scratch (I have twins) and a great book I uses which tells you what foods when is called SUper Baby Foods. Its a great and very popular book with a lot of nutritional information as well as a monthly "what's okay for them to eat" guide.
