What Is or Was Your 6-Month Olds Typical Day Like?

I have a 6-month old daughter and am curious to what others are doing regarding their babies schedules (if they have one). What does the typical day look like? Also, what is your baby eating at this point? Being a first-time mom, it's nice to hear what others are doing at this point! It would be helpful to see schedules and foods your child is eating (including quantities). I appreciate anyone willing to share! Thanks.

What can I do next?

Hi L.-

At 6-months I felt like I was finally starting to see a schedule with my son...mostly by following his ques. I would usually wake up the same time as him and he would nurse and be up for about an hour or two and then go down for his first nap which usually lasted about 1 -1 1/2 hours. He would then wake up for a longer stretch and go down for his second nap mid-afternoon, which would last about 2 hours and then be up until bedtime, which was around 8 p.m.

At six months I tried starting rice cereal mixed with breast milk or water but he really had no interest. I was really worried that he wasn't getting enough but he continued nursing frequently and was gaining weight. I read a lot of Dr. Sears books and tried to relax knowing he would eat when he was ready. Around 9-10 months he started eating a little more...more snack items as opposed full-blown meals. At a year, I would say he ate a few times a day...little things here and there.

My advice is to follow your daughter's cues and your intuition. I am a first time mom also and my son is almost 3...the one thing I've realized is that everything works out and to not worry too much!

Good Luck,

W.

My daugthers 3 now but I'll share what we did:) I made most of her food. It's super easy! Good one's to start with are carrot, sweet pot., banana... Just boil the veg. until tender and puree it with a chopper, blender, or processor. Save the water used to boil the veg. in and add a little at a time to the puree to get it to the thickness you want. If shes new to food, you dont want it too thick right away. You can always add more water later too. Once you get the consistency you want, pour the food into ice cube trays. Put them in the frezzer. When your ready to use it, unthaw... You can use one, two cubes, etc. It will save you tons of money and its more nutritious!!! For the banana, just smash one up with a fork until creamy... Very simple! Most baby foods have terrible food additives in them. This is very easy and one pot of carrots for example, could last for months! If your breastfeeding, I would only add one or two servings a day if your wanting to add food. Keep in mind, breast milk is still the best for her:) For activities at this age, we would read books, take walks outside, just sit outside to get a little sun and fresh air. Lots of floor play and games with her toys too. Dont feel bad letting her play 'alone' sometimes too. You dont want her to depend on you for all of her play time. Best of luck, if you need anymore info. on the food, just let me know:)

Hi L.--

I am a mother of three children 2 girls who are 6 and 4 and a boy 8 months. At about 4 months, I started feeding my son about a tsp. of rice cereal in his bottle....this still didn't satify him...So, I started feeding him rice cereal in the jar. The rice cereal in the box is less exp. however, he didn't care to much for it. Now, I am feeding him a jar of rice cereal or oatmeal in the am (along w/ the bottle)
At lunch I sometimes feed him a fruit. At dinner I feed him a vegetable and a fruit or 2 vegs. BTW...start feeding veggies 1st, I did fruit 1st w/ my first two...they rarely eat any veggies... live and learn, right? Also, the Gerber wagon wheels are good and the Gerber star puffs for teething and snacks..only if they can crawl and stay up on all fours...the puffs disolve quickly. My son gets up once or twice during the night for a bottle. He sleeps 2 hours in the am and typically the same in the afternoon. BTW, this is a great age to introduce Baby Einstein. I hope this helps you! Good Luck

My 7 1/2 month old son still follows pretty much the same schedule as he did at six months (he hasn't really hit that growth spurt yet, though he will be crawling soon and that might change things a bit). I work during the week but a typical weekend day goes like this

7:00am-wake up, six oz formula play until

9:00am-goes down for 2 hour nap

11:00am-wakes up, six oz formula, 1 gerber second foods tub equivalent of rice cereal or oatmeal mixed with banana plays until

1:00pm-goes down for 1 hour nap

2:00pm-wakes up from nap, six oz formula plus 1 tub gerber second foods w/ DHA for eye and brain development (fruit or vegetable blend w/ whole grains or granola etc.) plays until

4:30pm-goes down for short nap

5:00pm-wakes up for six oz formula plus 1 tub gerber second foods w/ DHA (I give one tub vegetable, and 1 tub fruit in a 24 hour period) Plays until

7:30pm-bath-time

8:00pm-last six oz bottle

8:15pm-story-time

8:30pm-bed-time

I should also point out that though my son is a pretty big healthy eater, he is in the 25% for weight and height as he has been since birth. I don't know where he puts it all but I sure wish I could burn it off as fast as he does!

I'm so glad you asked this question L. because I also have wondered how other babies eating/sleeping/playing schedule compares to mine. Prior to this post I had no idea if my son ate/slept more or less than his peers.

Hi L.. I have an 8 month old and we're still on basically the same schedule we were when she was 6 months old. We have a "flexible" schedule. I don't stress about the clock so much as long as it's AROUND the same time everyday and she knows what to expect (lunch is next, then play....)

-Wake up at 7ish and nurse
-Take a 45 minute power walk (she loves being outside and the
exercise has helped me lose all my baby weight)
-9ish - Eat breakfast (cereal or oatmeal mixed with 2 oz of
formula and about 2 oz of baby food fruit)
-After breakfast - Play on floor (on a mat) while mommy picks
up house, starts laundry, etc
-10ish - Take to baby's room, turn on music, read some books,
have some mommy/baby down time before her nap
-10ish to 12ish - Takes 1st nap (this nap varies between 1.5
and 2.5 hours)
-12ish (when she wakes up) - Nurse
-12:30ish to 2ish - This varies from day to day - meet someone
for lunch, go to the park, do grocery shopping or other
errands, or just stay home and play outside on a blanket in
yard.
-2ish - Lunch; now (at 8 months) we do a vegetable and meat
(about 2 oz of each), but we didn't start meat until she was
7 months so I would just finish off the fruit from breakfast
and do 2 more oz of vegetables. I switch the color of
vegetables everyday to be sure she's getting the variety of
nutrients she needs - one day green (green beans, peas,
spring vegetables, etc) then the next day I do yellow/orange
(carrots, squash, vegetable pasta, etc)
-After lunch - go play in room with mommy for about 30 minutes
-2:30ish to 4ish - nap (this nap also varies between 1 to 2.5
hours)
-Nurse when she wakes up
-Play inside or out (depending on weather) until daddy gets
home around 5:30. Then play with daddy until supper time
while mommy cooks.
-7ish - eat supper - finish off meat and vegetables (about 2
oz of each) that we didn't finish for lunch and if she still
seems hungry I give her a little fruit for dessert.
-Play with mommy and daddy until 8:30ish
-8:30ish - Nurse then go-to-bed-routine...ours goes something
like..go to room, change in pjs, read a book or two (same
book every night) sing a couple songs, say prayers, then
lights out.

On another note - Just a couple things that really helped us. Definitely establish a night time routine because it makes bedtime so much easier. Also, try to get out of the house - for you and the baby's sake at least a couple of times a week. Another thing we've been told is to read the same book to your baby at least once a day. It is supposed to help them when they really get interested in reading. The thought process is that if they've been read a book repeatedly they will pretty much have it memorized by 18 months or so which is when they should starting to be interested in reading. They will pretend they can read and want to "read" it to you instead of you reading it to them.

You may already know all this stuff, but either way hope this helps!!

It's been forever since my kids were that age, but I do recall trying to have naps at the same time each day; bedtime as well. Important re: foods. What you give your little one needs to be NO BIGGER than their last knuckle on their pinky finger (fingertip), so they can manage the food w/o choking. Just chop things into tiny pieces. I am sure you will hear from moms who have little ones also....Miss those days! =) Also the peds MDs recommend no juice (sugar), and to work on getting vegies into kids b/f fruits; again, to stay away from them loving sugar.

Unfortunately, she doesn't have a set schedule for herself because I also have to include my almost 3 year old.

Soo, if it were up to her, she'd sleep until 8am, but since my son gets up at the crack of dawn, she ends up waking up, too (he's not the quietest). She'll eat a small bottle (maybe 4 oz, sometimes 7oz). She'll hang out for a while (we'll do floortime play), then go back to sleep for about an hour until 8:30 or 9am. She'll have another bottle (4oz) and some oatmeal, then hang out with us while we get showered and ready. Around 10am, we all do something together (park, outside, etc.). At 11am or so, she'll have another small bottle and a veggie while my son eats lunch. Around noon, they both go to sleep. If she doesn't, then we do a lot of floor time. If she does sleep, it's for about 2 hours. When she wakes up, I usually give her another bottle and then play with her more, and my husband takes over with my son (they usually go outside). Then she plays alone or sits in the walker while dinner is being made. She has another bottle and some rice cereal, then goes to bed around 7pm.

I have an 8 month old whose schedule has not changed since he was 6 months. His schedule is almost exactly like Julie W!!! Except, my little boy sleeps for 1 1/2- 2 hours during his morning and afternoon nap. My son takes a small catnap around 5! The rest is the same from wake time to amount of food per meal.

My son is 5 1/2 months old, and his daily routine when he is home with me (daycare two days a week) goes like this: 6:30 am wake up, nurse, play til around 7:30, then 1/4 cup dry oatmeal mixed with water. First nap around 8:30 to about 10am, then wake up, nurse and play til around 11am, then another 1/4 cup of oatmeal. Second nap usually starts around 12:30 and lasts til 2 or so ( sometimes only 1 hour though), wake up, nurse and play til about 4 or so, then a short nap (<1hr) and 4 oz of formula at 5pm followed by another 1/4 cup of oatmeal. He then plays or we take a walk until bathtime around 6:15, then its bedtime ritual (music, snuggling) and a final nursing at 6:45 or 7 and in the crib by 7:30pm. We have just recently gotten him to fall asleep on his own (using the "baby whisperer" method) and be sleeps til 6 or 6:30 most nights :)

When he reaches 6 months I'm going to add veggies first to his lunch and dinner before the oatmeal, and cut out the 5pm bottle. I'll start fruit after he gets veggies down well. Hope it works!
