I have always chopped food the old fashioned way with a knife, but I would love to get some sort of small food chopper, but have no idea what kind to buy. I just need a small chopper that would quickly chop, cube, or dice about 1 cup of onion, peppers, etc. What do you reommend that WORKS and is small to store and easy to clean, and where can I buy it? I don't want to end up with a piece of junk that breaks right away or is a pain to use, store, and clean! Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

What can I do next?

The only thing I use is a knife and a benriner mandoline http://www.cutleryandmore.com/content/products/large/1470...

The mandoline slices uniformly so the dicing or mincing is also more uniform. And I use it a LOT, we actually have two, one for home and one for the business. The replacement blades are inexpensive, but it's a bit of an investment initially because it is one of the best on the market.

I agree that the "choppers" cut things to randomly and therefore they cook unevenly, and in my business I can't afford to cut corners like that.

I love my Pampered Chef Food Chopper. Its completely dishwasher safe and its small without a bunch of extra parts. They're a bit expensive but they last forever and work great. I use mine constantly.

I have The Ultimate Chopper and have had it for years. I love it! It does so many things and it is super fast. I bought one for my stepmother and she loves hers too. When I am in a hurry to make a recipe then I use it and it saves me tons of time and energy. Not too sure if they still sell them or not?

I love my Black & Decker Handy Chopper.

I've had larger ones but this is perfect for chopping onions, etc.
And everything can go right in the dishwasher.

My sister has a cuisinart mini-prep. She swears by it and says her tuna salad sandwiches have never been better.:) (We love our tuna salad in our family!)

Seriously, though, she also likes the small size. If you happen to be looking for something larger at some point, look for an older Cuisinart on eBay... I've had the same one for fifteen years; the newer ones, I understand, don't last as long.

Both are easy to clean so long as you either use a dishwasher OR do what I do (no dishwasher) and wash them immediately after use.

Talkstotrees has a point, too, in that the machines are random. If I care about the appearance of the end result, doing the work with a knife is fine.

I have the Presto salad shooter, Cuisinart mini food processor, and an industrial mandolin food slicer.

It really depends on the job as to which one I use, but I really like the salad shooter the best.

The salad shooter is fastest. It has several different blades. I slice by messy category. Since cheese is more sticky and gooey, I slice that last.

The salad shooter will not handle tomatoes, oranges, lemons, and limes, for slicing, so for that I would use the mandolin. It also won't cube.

The best for sliced onions is the food processor. The only other device I would use for onions is the mandolin if it was already out.

The mandolin is the most dangerous because the blades are exposed to your skin. They are all messy and a pain to clean. The salad shooter fits in a drawer.

I had a rival mini chopper from walmart (normally $9 but I paid $4 on black friday) I used it almost everyday and it lasted two years because it died. But I felt for what I paid for it I definatly got my moneys worth.

$20 chopper at Target (Target's is called the "Vidalia Chop Wizard"). I have used mine at least three days a week for the last 10 years, and I just bought one for a friend's wedding shower. Super easy to clean, and only three pieces to make it work. Everyone who comes to my house while I'm cooking ends up buying one. Seriously! Check out the reviews on it! You will find it in the "as seen on TV" endcap, or ask an employee. I think one of my favorite things about it is it isn't electric.
You can always take it back if you don't like it, but you will love it! I think Kmart has a similar one as well.

If you are a "foodie", you probably won't really like the hand choppers. I have had a few and they generally worked the same, but the food just didn't seem to cook "right", so I asked a friend of mine who is a chef about it. She said that they chop everything randomly. Some pieces are bigger triangles, so and teeny tiny cubes. Nothing is uniform, so it cooks things unevenly. It causes onions to have a bitter taste...because basically, some pieces are burning. So chopping by hand is best. But I cater (and I am not a chef) and sometimes chopping by hand is really daunting...last week I needed two bags of onions finely chopped. So I have been using the V-slicer. It cuts things pretty uniformly. You can slice, julienne and cube with it. It does sometimes tear the peppers a tiny bit, but nothing horrible. There are a bunch on the market, but this is the one I have...http://www.amazon.com/Swissmar-Borner-V-Slicer-Mandoline-...

I agree with Teri, I used to have something like that and loved it. But in the last few years, I have actually used a nut chopper! I slice up my onions and peppers into big chunks and put them in the chopper and it depends on if I want them big or little chopped how much I "hit" the handle. I know it is hard for me to explain, but I have a kitchenaid nut chopper and i love it. I really got it because my husband likes fresh jalapenos in everything, so I chop them up several times a week, and the electric choppers won't chop them up very good, for some reason, and I didn't like doing it by hand because I didn't want jalapenos on my hands all day long.
