Hepatitis B, I believe. I just delayed my daughters immunization by six months. Her doctor was all bent because she didn't get a bonus from the companies because I didn't do them on their schedule. However My daughter is one of the healthiest kids I know. I am glad she had a chance to get her immune system going from breast milk before shots. She is 9 years old now & is up to date on all her shots.

I am with LeeLee. its Vitamin K and Hep b. You can skip them, but they are best for their immune system. Best to get them at birth because he is gonna have to get another dose of shots at 2 months anyways.

I am a former NICU Respiratory Therapist and now a midwife. You really need to educate yourself on what they want to give your baby. They like to give the Hepatitis B vaccine at birth. This is not neccessary unless your baby is sexually active, an IV drug user or you have hepatitis. Also, vitamin K is given. Again not neccessary unless you have a traumatic birth or you are not going to breastfeed. Vitamin K is thought to increase the child's chances or leukemia. They will also put ointment in the baby's eyes. The baby does not need this unless you have an STD. You can refuse all of this.

Vitamin K and Hep B. Both are skippable, IMO.

You need to get a list of what they are going to give... You have the right to refuse ANY medical procedure or medication for both yourself and your newborn. Utilize your right to be informed and google everything BEFORE you give birth.

Hep B....do some research on it. Hep B is only transmitted by unprotected sex, IV needle drug use, and bodily fluids. So, unless your newnbron is having sex, doing drugs or working in a Lab around other human body fluids like blood, then I don't see the need for it personally. It's prefectly suitable to delay that vacc until they are older and truly need it. They have to get a booster for it when they are older and more "at risk" anyway so why bombard a newborns body with the chemicals in the vacc to begin with? I'm HUGE on selective vaccines and spreading them out altogether, but I have done alot of research on the subject. I highly suggest you do the research yourself and make an informed descision that best suits you and your family. Everyone has their own personal reasons for making the descisions they make and no one has the right to pass judgement on others for their choices without knowing the full story. Dr Sear's website is pretty good about breaking down all vaccines, whats in them and possible side effects are. He is fairly "middle -of-the-road" and does not seem to sway one way or the other (pro-vaccine or anti-vaccine). But I really think you should dig deeper and read several sources in your education. Don't just listen to one person (i.e. your childs Pediatrician) and call it good. Regardless, YOU are in control of what they do to YOUR baby. You can request the Vit K shot only and pass on Hep B. I did with both my babies. But you still have to watch them or have a family member in the room with you watch them. My mom stopped them from giving my first child the Hep Shot even AFTER I made my wishes known, they just didn't bother to read the notes. Best wishes...

Do some research. I had no idea what my first baby got, then researched and declined everything for my second and third. But you need to be in the driver's seat and let the doctors and nurses know that is what you want. Otherwise, they will just do it.

I think it is just a hepatitis shot.... They have to have you sign something to give them the shot....at least at my hospital they did.

It's Hep B, and it's pretty ridiculous that they give it to newborns.

Just ask your OB/GYN or the Pediatrician you have chosen, who will be delivering your baby.

They have to get your consent. I opted out of everything but vitamin k. The problem is that by the time you know about the clotting problem it can be too late. I would not go to any doctor who would follow with my wishes. So that is really easy.

I heard some get hep B at birth. I am a peds nurse and the doctors say to start vaccines at 2 months. The get the eye ointment usually. Be sure to ask your pediatrician what they suggest and be sure they know when you give birth what you want, the baby goes to the doctor nurse first without you since you are in labor or in OR with c section. be sure they clearly know your wishes

Vitamin K is the initial one. But they are now offering the Hepatitis B vaccine at birth, or you can wait until the babys 2mo visit. Atleast that's how it was for us here in FL. Either way, you have to sign a consent for the Hep B, but the Vit K is automatically given. I have a 3 1/2yr old and he only got the Vit K and they never asked about anything else. But with my 10wk old they gave the Vit K then told us we could opt to do the Hep B now or later - we waited till his 2mo visit. We did still have to sign a decline paper for the Hep B, but we would have had to sign consent to give it too.

Definitely should have the Vitamin K shot. Vitamin K is essential to the blood clotting process and it is made by the bacteria in our gut. Babies don't have this bacteria in their system at birth and therefore don't have the vitamin K being produced. It is usually given automatically at the hospital. I personally would rather have my baby get the vitamin K shot rather than risk having him/her bleed out because I didn't allow it. I also know in Washington that if you refuse the vitamin K shot at the hospital they are required to report you to CPS.

We do vitamin k but not hep b! Unless mom has hep b or multiple partners and a history of drug use, baby won't be doing those so I don't see the need for it. Immunity isn't guaranteed so best to hold off and let them get it when they become sexually active or exposed to those pathogens. My favorite websites for vaccine info are the NVIC website, www.thedoctorwithin.com and the dr sears vaccine book. Be sure to have the ones you don't want clearly listed in your chart or make sure your husband/partner/nurse knows, in case you are unable to tell them (complications for you or baby, sleeping, not paying attention..it happened to my friend!)
