My 16 mo old got his 15 mo shots on tues... Flu shot, varicella (chick pox), and polio combination. Wed night he had a fever (mid-high 102)...lasted til thurs afternoonish, and came back fri evening. Overnight both fri and sat night, my son woke up crying/uncomfortable in middle of the night, not able to comfort calm down without nursing back to sleep (good thing I am still nursing or I don't know what I'd do). During the day he has been okay... But irritable. Not eating/drinking as much, not sleeping as much. Hubby and I thought sore throat?? But tonight, he woke up just whining, uncomfortable. During a diaper change/temp check (no fever), I noticed little clusters of flat bumps (like the flat bump of an early mosquito bite) on his leg, arm (noticed some on his hand earlier in eve), and face/cheek/neck. I am worried it might be chick pox fromthe vaccine!! He is also working on teeth but he is not a cranky teether!! He is so laid back and mellow and easy that these days of increased irritability and restlessness are very out of character. Even now as i nurse him he isn't still. His eyes are closed but he is wiggling and writhing as if he would rather not be held. Very restless... Any insight? Tips? I plan on calling dr tomorrow... Any one else get pox from vaccine??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It's not pox. The rash was gone this AM. Still took him in to the doctor along with Daddy who got a strep test - negative. Just sounds like we are getting the run of the mill on the lovely viruses! I realize the doctor is always the best one to call - however, our insurance has changed and I am learning how to not run in to the dr. for every sniffle. Granted, this was no "sniffle" - but all is okay. I know mamapedia is not a medical resource, my main question basically was if anyone had experienced getting CP after the vaccine. So, thanks for the input all! Have a great week!

Is he by any chance allergic to eggs? There are eggs in the chicken pox vax.

My oldest had the chicken pox (from daycare) a couple of months after she had the vax. It was nothing like what you are describing, she really didn't notice them at all. They were just spots on her. She was a little over 17 months when she got them.

It's normal to get a mild outbreak of chicken pox from the vaccine that can last a few days.

Also Michele, that's stupid. I was never vaccinated as a child for chicken pox and did not pass it to either of my children, and I did breastfeed for the first year and a half. Absolute talk like regarding vaccines and illness is just silly.

He could be getting a reaction, it does happen. But the vaccine is made from cowpox microbes, not chicken pox. It's a much milder illness that builds protection against both forms of pox.

I'm assuming you can give him doses of acetaminophen to help keep him comfortable, whether from a reaction, or teething, or both. Hope he feels better soon, poor little guy. You can be assured at least that when the body mounts such a strong reaction, he's building lots of good antibodies.

Not to make you feel bad after the fact, but to all nursing moms out there, a mother who was not vaccinated for chick. pox as a child will give her newborn protection for the first yr., but a mother who did, will not.

It is very likely a mild case. The problem people have had is that the vaccine was wearing off after ten years and 11 year olds were getting shingles. I'd strongly urge you to split up shots in the future. I would think that the shock of three shots like that temporarily weakened his immune system, making him more prone to either the flu or cp. Make sure to tell the doctor.

My daughter got a mild case of them from the vaccine back when she turned 4. I kept her home for a day and she was fine. Hope he feels better soon!

M., call your doctor or take the baby in to be looked at. The doctor knows more than any of the moms on this site, unless they are doctors. Plus, they can't even see what you are talking about on the baby.

Ask the doctor about breastfeeding and immunities. Then you will know.

Sometimes people are misinformed - that doesn't make them stupid.

My daughter had a full blown case but not right after having gotten the shot. She also had them mostly in her warm spots to start (on her belly, around her diaper area). Our pediatrician wouldn't see her though until the last on had a scab though because of the risk of anyone else at the office catching them, best of luck to you. That was the longest 6 weeks of my life. I really thought twice about having my youngest vaccinated against them because to me it truly wasn't worth it. If this was a mild case that she got, I would've hated to have seen what she would've gotten if I had just let it run it's course, but she is also going to be 14 in a few years so I'm hoping things have gotten better w/that over the years.

I think it is common to get a very very very mild case of whatever the vaccine is for sometimes, like the flu vaccine, I have heard people say they got a very super mild case after they got their shot.

Since it is on his leg, is it where the shot was? Call the doc for sure, it could be something or it could be just normal.
