My son is 14 1/2 months old and is not walking yet. He was only 4lbs 7oz when he was born. He does really well developmentally in other areas, he says a lot of words. He will hold onto the couch and stand and will take 1 or 2 steps, but when we hold his hands it seems like he is not strong enough and he has no interest, he just falls on his butt. When should I be worried?

What can I do next?

My daughter was born in 11/01/05 too! They're birthday buddies. That being said she started to walk at 13 months. Before she walked on her own she spent alot of time hanginging on the couch. She also had trouble walking with us when we tried. Have you tried walking holding both of his hands? That helped a little with her.

I wouldn't suggest the walker becuase it actully weakens the upper leg muscles needed for walking. Lots of people suggest them but really they're useless expessially becuase your baby has already started on his own. Also if he's going to fall, you should let him fall becuase learning to land and picking himself back up are important to his development too.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. It sounds like he's on his way and just needs the confidence to do it on his own.

Good Morning K.,

My son was a late walker. Our pediatricians referred us to see a neurologist. They examed our son and found out that he had a condition called hemepares which is a paralyses of the muscles. The neurologist referred us to physical therapy for our son. Our son started physical therapy and within about 4 months our son was walking.

I'm not sure at what point you should start worrying if there's something wrong developmentally, but I know at 14 1/2 months you should not worry about it at all. He's standing and taking 1-2 steps, I think that's great. It sounds like any time now he'll start walking. My daughter started walking the week after she turned 1. My son on the other hand was more like yours, it just didn't seem to interest him. I started right around 13 1/2 months. I finally just started practicing with him all the time and it seems like he just gave in. Every child is definitely different, and I don't think you have anything to worry about. I'm sure at your next pediatrician visit they can give you more of a time frame on when it is something to worry about.

Hi! The doctors start worrying after 18 months, according to my friend whose baby starting walking at almost 17 months. She's now a toddler who runs and jumps all over the place. If your baby is bearing weight and cruising, I wouldn't be worried. =)
