A friend of mine is worried about her grandson's learning. She can't decide between VTech or Leapfrog for a learning tool.

What can I do next?

We've had both but I am really impressed with Leapfrog's Tag Reader as well as their OLDER version of the Leapster 2. I don't like the Leapster Explorer quite as much, the games seemed better on the older console. We have some v-tech toys but I seem to like the Leapfrog better over all.

We prefer leapfrog.....We have the tag reader, the leapster 2 and a few leapfrog DVDs and every one of these products are really good.
The DVDs are amazing, especially the Talking letter factory and the talking word factory. The preschool one is good too.
I love the Tag reader and the books. And so does my 4 year old daughter. I love that she can read the book by touching words, or it can read to her and she can play games within the book.
I recently bought a used leapster 2 for my daughter. I really am not into the learning part of these handheld games - I don't see it. Yes, the games do revolve around learning things - letters, numbers, etc and I like that the games do have this aspect to them, my daughter never turns to me and says that she learned something, like from the DVDs or the Tag. But it is fun and entertaining for the kiddos and they may learn from it.
But I still look at each of these things as entertainment with expansion on learning, not actual learning.

I agree-they are both good and offer different things.

Depends on their age too-LeapFrog usually is better for toddlers and pre-K, while V-tech can go a little older.

Try both their web sites-there is more to offer then what you may find at Target or Wal-mart

My son was given a VTech last year for his birthday and he loves it BUT he's obsessed with "Cars" and ONLY Leapfrog has "Cars" books. I feel bad for him because the V-Tech is so limited. Thinking about making the switch.

BTW, I did find brand new books on E-Bay for a fraction of the price!

We have both and they are great. I bought the Leapster off the company's website this past Christmas. The Leapster didn't work after one month, so I called the company, they gave me an RMA#, and I was instructed by the company to deface the product, scan a photo of the defaced Leapster to the company, and they replaced it. Just in case that happens, you know what you need to do.

Each are good.

We used both. LeapFrog has a handheld device that my boys would carry and do math and spelling on.

VTech has good stuff as well. find out what he's deficient in and then see what product fits that need better - also decide whether they want hand held or TV/Computer products...

I went through the samething during my kids birthday. My grandma wanted to buy them a Leapster or VTech so I took my daughter (which was turning 5) to the store ( Toys R Us) with us and let her try them out. We choose Leapster Exploer for both my kids which are 3 & 5. My son(3) didnt have much to do with it until the past couple of weeks. I found that it had a lot of games to choose from and easiest for my daughte (5) to pick up. She was having some learning issues like not writing letters, knowing letter, knowing numbers, and so on. Since her birthday when she got it, she has improved soooo much. She now knows all her letters, can write them, knows her numbers, colors, and shapes much better.
