Hi, so im very worried about my 2 1/2 year old son. He fell and hit his head about 1 month ago and developed a knot on the right side of his head. We took him to his pediatrician to get him looked at and he said my son was fine and the knot was infact "a scar" from the fall and would not go away. It looks obvious and feels hard. Well since my son fell and hit his head, he has been complaining that his right eye hurts and tends to close it more when he cries. He complains more than once on a daily basis about his eye. We have taken him back to his pediatrician and he said the outer part of his eye looks fine and there is nothing wrong. We have also taken him to the er due to the excessiveness of my son saying that his eye hurts. The er did a ct scan and could not find nothing. We decided to take him to the eye doctor, but my son was not very cooperative with the eye exams, so we have another appt. Next month. I don't know what else to do because my son still complains about it and i worry about him...........does anyone have any ideas on this or has it happened to your child and if so, what can i do.

What can I do next?

The doctor you're looking for is a pediatric neurologist, although an opthomologist (when you say eye doc, did you mean opthamologist -actual doctor- or optometrist -not a doctor?) may be able to help in some cases... A head injury resulting in outward effect on ANY part of the body is overseen by a neurologist.

To keep in mind... These events may or may not be linked (sometimes we only notice things after an Event, that have actually been around for awhile), or may be linked in a weird way (like it may be a sinus issue or ear issue triggered by the fall), or may just be coincidental (same week as thing A happens, thing B also happens), or can be reverse-causal (fall caused by neurological problem).

Not saying I think you're wrong... Just that it might take awhile to sort out the issue, and it MAY be more complex then you think.

((Ex: after my concussion, my migraines have almost vanished. That MAY be due to the head injury. Good probability. But they MAY be linked instead to my life being so much less stressful since I left my husband. Who caused the concussion in the first place. Also a good probability. Or it may be that he caused my migraines with a trigger we didnt knjw anout -cologn, deodorant, guitar oil, whatever). good probability. Or it may be that the impact inblocked one of ghe foramen in my sinuses, allowing them to drain. Another good probability. Or (there are anout 8 more 'ors'.) In my case, it really doesn't matter. But in a case wherein you're trying to fix a problem... Untangling the strings can take awhile. ))

So while a Ped, then neurologist, then ENT, then ophthalmologist would be my route to start with... It may be a tropical disease or referred pain from a bowel movement. It will take some time to sort... But you're moving in ghe right direction!!!

If you have a children's hospital in your area, take him there. I can't tell you how many times the kids regular pedi said "don't worry" and then we took them to Children's Hospital and twice the kids were hospitalized!

Contact another eye doctor and see if he can be seen sooner. Call your regular opthamologist and ask for references to a pediatric opthamologist.

I wouldn't wait.

Prayers for you and your son.

More likely than not the knot you are feeling is a bone calcification. They do actually go away. Pretty much if the impact is hard enough it can damage the bone without actually fracturing it. It then calcifies while the bone heals much in the same way as a broken bone.

I have no idea what is going on with his eye but if the only reason you are drawing this conclusion is that knot, don't worry about the knot.

I would take him to a pediatric neurologist. I would also call around for another pediatric eye doctor that can get him in today/tomorrow not next month.

How hard was the fall? Is it possible that he is showing signs of a concussion? Sometimes concussions take up to 2 weeks to manifest. I know that sounds off the wall, but my son 11y was just diagnosed with one 2 weeks after his football injury and after talking to the specialist, I realized that he had one at age 7 (head met metal pole in a parking lot!) that we just didn't realize. Testing for a concussion in a child will be difficult. There are series of tests based on light sensitivity, balance, etc. Think field sobriety tests. :)

I'd take your son early in the morning to the eye doctor after a full night's sleep and a big breakfast. Hopefully he'll cooperate better. Is it a pediatric opthamologist? They are better at dealing with children.

I agree with the idea of consulting a pediatric neurologist. I am wondering if what he really has is a headache "in his eye". It could be that the fall triggered migraines in his eye.

I hope he is free of this soon, Veronica!

How about asking the doctor for an MRI.

If he/she does won't do it, call in and ask for someone to put in a referral
or request for an MRI.

I'm hoping the best for your son.

I would try the eye dr again since he is complaining of eye pain.

As for the bump, Im sure it is a scar of the bone. My daughter fell when she was about 9 months old and hit her fore head above her left eye and it "calciumified".. more or less become a scar of the bones. She is 4 and its less noticable now.. but its still there and some days its more noticeable than others.
