I know you didn't ask this question but I have the Dyson (purple one) and absolutely LOVE it. I have had it for several years and use it several times a week. It has held up well.

I bought a Sharp vac that I paid somewhere close to $250.00 back in about 1998 and it's still going strong. I've had to replace the belt several times, but it's a workhorse. You might check with a regular vac store for the current really good ones.

get a dyson. they pick up well and haven't had mine clog up at all. I didn't buy the most expensive one. Got the cheaper model but there are different sizes. I heard the dyson animal is great if you have a lot of pet hair. We have a cat and so far hasn't clogged up but the dyson is also easy to take apart if you do happen to get a clog but the suction is powerful and does a good job. I used dirt devil vision before buying the dyson and they worked well too but had problems with the hose clogging up and would take me a long time to take it all apart and unclog it so after my brother got a dyson and he showed me how easy they are to take apart if it gets clogged I went and got one.

I've never used a Eureka brand. About 12 years ago I bought a Kenmore vaccum cleaner from Sears and I still use it several times a week and I have zero issue with it.

Hi M., I actually owned a Eureka Boss a few years ago. It worked great at first, but lost suction power probably after about a year. I truly believe in the whole, you get what you pay for. It lasted it's worth. I've never owned an expensive vacuum, but I think that it is one of those things that if you can afford to buy a more expensive one it will last a much longer time. But if a decent cheap one is what you're looking for, the boss was pretty good. I'm lucky now, I moved into a house with hardwood floors, I don't miss the carpet at all! Good Luck :)

Hi M., I have the Eureka Boss and I've been happy with it. We've had it for about 2 years now. The only problem I've had is one time I went to step on the button that releases the handle and puts the roller on the floor and it's wouldn't go flat on the floor. Don't know what the problem was but my hubby fixed it. We have a pretty good size house and a very hairy dog and with the dog hair that we have it I'm surprised it hasn't died yet. I vacuum 3 or 4 times a week. And it still works great!

Don't know anything about the Eureka vaccuums, but I have had a Rainbow vacuum for 14 years now. The same one with 1 time repairs. they are costly, but well worth it. I love my Rainbow. It picks up everything. Maybe you should consider something like that.

The SHARP vacuums are workhorses. I have a couple of vacuums...one Sharp and one Hoover. The Hoover I bought last year at Sam's Club and it has been terrific! I was tired of dragging them up and down stairs, so now I have one upstairs and one downstairs. The Hoover cost around $150.00 which is relatively inexpensive for a vacuum.

We love the Eureka Boss. I think it only cost $39 and is very light weight. Our grandsons even love to vacuum with it. It collects a lot of dirt because we have to dump the tray about every room. We've had it for about 2 years and use it much more often than our $200 Hoover.

Why don't you try going to an actual vacuum cleaner store. They can let you try a few models and help you get what you need for your house. I have a 20 year old Hoover Supremacy and another Hoover that I bought used at a vacuum cleaner store for $80 last year (one for each floor) and I don't expect either to ever fail beyond regular maintenance like brush replacement, new belt, etc...

I would skip the Eureka's and just get a Dyson. My mom's Eureka Altima also broke after 6 months- a year, she's really hard on vaccums so she was skeptical about the dyson. She's had it 2 years now and no problems, she loves it.

I had the Boss vacuum and it went through several belts. My husband bought me a refurbished Dyson Animal on Amazon two years ago and I love it! We have a 23 mos. old, a dog and a cat and it still does a great job. Although it has that "vacuum cleaner smell" they sometimes get after a while, in spite of me washing the filter out.

M., We have a Eureka, I am not sure if they make this particular model anymore, but it was pretty reasonable. It is called "whirlwind" it is bagless with a canister which I like. It has Fabulous suction, we have had it for 4 years! The only thing wrong with it is the way to adjust it for different types of carpet broke a while back but it has not affected us at all...lots of luck!

I was in the same boat, but took the flip-side approach. I, too, was tired of spending $$$ every several months on replacement vacuums. I decided to go with an Oreck. I have had it for over 10 years. I recently took it in to Mar-Beck and spent $40 to have the cord replaced. They put on a much, much longer cord (love that), replaced the fiter and bag. It's still going strong. Good luck to you.

I also just have to say that although it was expensive ($500 is expensive to me!), my Dyson Animal is WORTH IT! I have had it for five years, and the only problem it has had is the hose split. It was $50, and so easy that I could replace it myself. It never loses suction, it sucks up everything, and as long as the beater brush is not tangled with hair, it works amazing. I will never use another vacuum. Think about it: $550 for 5 years and still going strong. Isn't that cheaper than buying a cheap one every 6-12 months? And I have two dogs and two cats. If you are in doubt, buy it at Costco. They have a no questions asked guarantee on everything.

If you're tired of vacuums that don't work, it's time to spend MORE money, not LESS. Buy a Dyson! It's the only way. You get what you pay for.

I have to tell you that there is one vacuum on the market that is worth every penney that I paid for it with no service done on it at all. I own a dyson which I purchased when the grandson was like 5 months old an was diagnosed with excema, I have 2 dogs an wanted a vacuum that would pick up an not leave something in the carpet to irritate his skin. Xav is now going to be 4 in Oct. an I have never had to have this vacuum serviced not once.

Three words: Dyson, Dyson, Dyson

There are several models, all of which I love. We have the purple one because it has more gadgets for getting around and under things, but I am intrigued by the one I see on the comercials that pivots so easily. I may sell the one we have just to get to buy that one. I don't think I want to wait for it to wear out. We've used ours more than 5 years. If you ever notice a problem with suction, it is made so you can take out an area of tubing and clean it. We've only had to do this twice. A couple of weeks ago my husband cleaned it out with an air hose and it works like new again. We have one at the office as well. The only complaint I've heard was from one person who feared that too much suction might shorten the life of a carpet by sucking up too much fiber. I'm aching to get new carpets, but the Dyson hasn't harmed the old carpet a bit! It works so well we don't need to shampoo the carpets nearly so often. It gets up the stuff that leave carpets smelly.

I've used Kirby, Eureka, Rainbow, and a variety of others in the past. None of them kept me satisfied. Dyson is a well-made tool, hands down. I don't know how they keep getting away with selling us machines that fail after a short amount of time. I wouldn't buy a garbage disposal or any other appliance that was only designed to work well for a year or less.

I will admit that my favorite feature was the image on the owner's manual. It was the silhouette of a man using a vaccume. All of the others I've seen always show a woman using it.

I used to have the same problem with going through vacuums every 6-12 months. The problem that we found was that the vacuums made by Eureka and Hoover have a motor piece made from heavy duty plastic that would break with the long hair from my duaghters and I.

My Kirby however, the piece is made from metal. I haven't had to buy a new vaccuum in years! In fact, I love my Kirby so much that my original one (which I bought reconditioned)is now my upstairs machine and I bought a new one for downstairs!

I personally do not like Eureka vacuum cleaners at all.
I have had one as well as a Kirby , as well as an Oreck and about 10 years ago I bought a Simplicity and have absolutely loved it. I just had it overhauled for 100.00 and its as good as new! A simplicty costs around $250.00 and has been fabulous! It has great pick-up and except for a new cord, which I ran over, several new belts, and filters, I have not had to spend any money on it.
There is a Simplicity dealer in O'Fallon, Mo. . I have used my Simplicity at home for 10 years, as well as at my business, A.'s Closet and Tea Room where I use it on carpets as well as wooden floors.
I recommend it highly!

My advice, buy a Dyson. I know they are expensive but we have had ours for 5 years and it works great. We bought the cheapest one they sell. It is yellow. We had a Eureka when we got married 6 yrs ago as a wedding gift and I don't think it lasted a year. We bought a Dyson and have had it ever since.

Just a note, get a 20% off coupon and buy it at Bed Bath and Beyond. It is a big savings.

I'd usually suggest to move up and get a better vacuum rather than a "throwaway." The only exception I can think of would be Eureka's "Mighty Mite" HEPA vacuum. We bought one when we were doing some renovation work and were stirring up a lot of lead paint dust. We wanted a more-or-less disposable HEPA vacuum for that dirty job. Turns out it kept working great for years after that! It finally bit the dust only because the case cracked.

I did a LOT of research when we bought a new vacuum cleaner. I bought a Dyson and hated it--HATED IT--so much I returned it within a week. We have a variety of surfaces in our house--hardwoods, various types of carpets, and tile--and it was a royal pain in the a** to switch the settings back and forth. Plus, it kept getting snagged up on human hairs, so I had to stop every five minutes and cut them off of the vacuum head. My husband and I had only shoulder-length hair at the time, and it's not like we were shedding a ton!!! I mean, a vacuum that couldn't handle human hair? Did I mention I HATED our Dyson??

We ended up buying a Simplicity at Mar-Beck, and I LOVE it! It's sooo easy to use and does a great job. Also, it's made in Missouri, which is really cool. It's built like a tank (not heavy, but really sturdy) and seems to be virtually indestructible. It cost about the same as a Dyson, but it was totally worth it.

I have a bissel lift off. I'm going on 4 yrs with this one and haven't had any problems so far(knock on wood)
