I am looking to buy a new vacuum. I am feed up with the cheap Wal Mart vacuums and have saved my money to buy a nice vacuum that will last me more than a year or two. I have been looking at a Dyson or Oreck and was wanting any feedback from others that use these. I dont want to spend more then $500. Does anyone have advice on what they like? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I LOVE my Dyson! Got the "Animal" first for a house with three cats. Then moved out and got the yellow one (don't remember the name) and love that one, too.

My mom loves her Oreck (it's probably 20 years old, though, and I don't know if the quality is still the same on the new models). I saw a segment on Good Morning America this week where Consumer Reports recommended the Hoover Platinum over the other, more expensive vacuums that are available. It's more like $300, from what I saw on Amazon, and gets good reviews. It also seems to come with a separate canister vacuum for free.

I know you don't want to spend more than $500 but, have you heard of a Rainbow? They are great vacuum and decrease the dust in the air and truly clean your home!!

Let me know if you would like more info.

Funny you should ask this...my husband just bought a Dyson for us today (he's the main vacuum user in the house!). We were able to get it for ~ $170 off at Best Buy. They price matched their BestBuy.com price in the store. I'm not sure of the model though (it's not the Animal).

I had an Oreck and while nice because it was so lightweight, I didn't realize it wasn't that great in cleaning until I bought a new vacuum. I now have the Eureka Boss SmartVac that was a Consumer Reports best buy. It is obviously heavier and only slightly louder but cleans extremely well...which for me is the most important aspect of a vacuum!

The Dyson rocks! I've had it for 3 years and it's still as good as when I got it. When I went to purchase it, I googled Dyson vs. Oreck and did a lot of research.

I absolutely love my Oreck vacuum, but if I had the money I'd buy I Dyson. I've never had the Oreck fail to suck things up or lose suction , but it doesn't have the same cool attachments and ease of use the Dyson does.

I recently bought a Dyson and my mom has had Orecks for years. She likes to buy the newest models of Orecks and then give her old ones to her kids. I'm the last kid, and didn't want to wait my turn for an Oreck, so I bought a Dyson. I wish I had waited to get one of my mom's old Orecks. The Dyson does great on carpet, but my house is 90% woodfloors. And to get the hose for the attachments out I have to take off the handle. It's very annoying, and because it doesn't do well on the wood floors, I use the attachments 90% of the time. And like someone said before, the attachments for the hose do not work very well, you have to use just the hose itself. If you could find a newer Dyson model with an easier to use hose/attachment area, that doesn't require you to take the Dyson half way apart, then it might be worth it.
I however, wish I had an Oreck. My mom always gets the one that comes with a hand held little vacuum, as well as their compact upright model. It's SO LIGHT WEIGHT, and easy to use. My mom cleans constantly, and has NEVER complained about her Oreck. There's no mess of the hose and attachments on the upright, and the little hand held one is EXCELLENT for doing stairs and stuff like that, because it's smaller.

My mom has an Oreck and my friend has a Dyson...They both seem to be good vacuums.
I have to recommend a Swivel Sweeper as an addition though! I love them. They are the best for when you have just a little cleanup to do but don't want to pull out the big vacuum or make a ton of noise. I've tested what it can pick up and it picks up pet hair, Cheerios, cracker crumbs, macaroni, coins, rice, grated cheese, etc. The only thing it has a little trouble with is little bits of paper. I literally use it every day to clean up under my sons high chair. Awesome!

My mom and I both have a dyson. I recommended it to her before I even got mine! I too just had the cheap ones and was really frustrated with it never working well. A friend let me borrow hers (and it was a couple years old!) and it worked so well I was sold!

HI M.,
I have had a Dyson for 5 years and I absolutely HATE it. It is junk for hardwood floors and when the attatchments are used the suction is weak. I was, and still am, SO disappointed in my Dyson!

My sister has an Oreck and likes it, my MIL has an electrolux and likes it, my Mom has a Rainbow vac. system and LOVES it. I borrow it all the time!

I think you will be very happy with either one. I had an Oreck for a little over 10 years and really did love it. It died a few months ago and I bought the Dyson Animal and love it too. I am sure Oreck has new technology since I purchased mine (over a decade ago) but I switched becuase I like the idea of a bagless vacuum and the Dyson technology relating to clean air outputs. Both were excellent as far as suction goes. So, like I said, you will probably be happt with either one. My Oreck was around $500 and the Dyson was $550, but I bought it at Kohls online with a 20% off coupon and free shipping which saved a bundle. Good luck and happy vacuuming!

I love my Dyson, we have had it for 4 years now and have not had any problems with it at all. We got the animal one (even though we have no animals the previous owners had animals) the first few times I used it I couldn't believe how much it sucked up and how fast it filled up (our last vacuum cleaner sucked - didn't work that well and was loud and noisy). If I ever have to get another vacuum cleaner it will be another Dyson I absolutely love it!!

sounds like everyone loves the dyson but i'm obsessed with my oreck...so is my mother and grandmother...generations! the best thing about it is that i take it in for a tune up once a year and they make it all shiney and new again...and thats FREE for 10 YEARS! seriously. its a fantasic warranty. worth every penny. my husband knows not to buy me things that plug in as gifts but my oreck was my housewarming gift when we moved in our house 3 years ago and i was THRILLED! good luck with your hunt.

Dear M.,

I have two Dysons and I love them! I have owned one for 5 years and the other for 1 year. I don't think I will ever buy another brand. The canister is an easy cleanup, the filter is an easy clean up (once every six months) and the attachments make it very easy to do stairs, edges, etc.

I don't know anything about the Oreck but I do know that Dyson rocks!

Happy Vaccuming!

My mom has an Oreck and swears by it. I have a Dyson and swear by it. Recently I was over at my mom's house helping clean up for a party. She had a rug that was covered in dog hair. I used her Oreck - it didn't pick up a thing. We changed her bag - still nothing. I brought my Dyson over and tried it. We could see where we had gone over it with my Dyson - and the canister was practically full when we were done. I'm pretty sure that she'll be getting a Dyson soon - I know I love mine. Also, my kids lost one of the attachments, I looked for it forever. Finally I called Dyson to find out how much it would be for a new one. They sent it to me for free since it was still under warranty. Have I said, I love my Dyson?

My sister has had both an Oreck and a Dyson. She had the Oreck first and then caught Dyson fever and got one of those. She hated it and threw it out. Another good thing about Orecks (I have one also) is that parts can be replaced and serviced. Once your Dyson is done, it's done from what I've heard. Also, Orecks usually come with an extra thing; I got a handheld vacuum with attachments. Good luck!!

Going off the beaten path here... I've had a Dyson, Oreck, and Kirby but I would get a Filter Queen Majestic....
It is the best vacuum I have ever owned.
The downside is that it is a canister, and does require filters, but it has the best suction of any vacuum I've tried.

Also, I would buy a newer used one, like from Ebay or craigslist or something. New, they retail for thousands of dollars, but i picked up a used one for $500, and since they have a lifetime warranty on them, there are no worries about quality.

I've seen 25 and 30 yr old models still working in great condition.

I've had mine for a couple of years now and wouldn't trade it for the world.

I've never had a Dyson or Oreck, but my mom has used the Sears Kenmore canister vacuums for years (as long as I can remember!). I've had my own for a few years now and I love it! HEPA filter, "pet" attachment to do furniture & stairs, the pole extends (Mom's jealous because she has an earlier model that doesn't do that! LOL). I even still have my mom's REALLY old one in storage that still works!

I believe they still cost around $400 for their newest models.

We've had a Dyson for 4 years now and I love it! It does a great job of picking up cat hair (we have 2 cats) and with 2 active boys it's amazing. Odd that you should ask this question - we have a cleaning lady come once a month to do the deep cleaning - she insists on using her Oreck, but as soon as she leaves I pull out my Dyson and pick up tons more off the carpet!

I think whatever you do will be fine, this is like the Huggies/Pampers debate - it's more like everyone has something that they prefer for some reason.

Best of luck
K.
