Dyson or Oreck - Buying New Vacuum

I am looking to buy a new vacuum. I am feed up with the cheap Wal Mart vacuums and have saved my money to buy a nice vacuum that will last me more than a year or two. I have been looking at a Dyson or Oreck and was wanting any feedback from others that use these. I dont want to spend more then $500. Does anyone have advice on what they like? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I LOVE my Dyson! Got the "Animal" first for a house with three cats. Then moved out and got the yellow one (don't remember the name) and love that one, too.

My mom loves her Oreck (it's probably 20 years old, though, and I don't know if the quality is still the same on the new models). I saw a segment on Good Morning America this week where Consumer Reports recommended the Hoover Platinum over the other, more expensive vacuums that are available. It's more like $300, from what I saw on Amazon, and gets good reviews. It also seems to come with a separate canister vacuum for free.

We have a Rainbow and love it! It cleans everything up so easily! Plus, has many other functions as well.

I know you don't want to spend more than $500 but, have you heard of a Rainbow? They are great vacuum and decrease the dust in the air and truly clean your home!!

Let me know if you would like more info.

Funny you should ask this...my husband just bought a Dyson for us today (he's the main vacuum user in the house!). We were able to get it for ~ $170 off at Best Buy. They price matched their BestBuy.com price in the store. I'm not sure of the model though (it's not the Animal).

Dyson hands down!! I love mine and would highly recommend it!!

Going off the beaten path here... I've had a Dyson, Oreck, and Kirby but I would get a Filter Queen Majestic....
It is the best vacuum I have ever owned.
The downside is that it is a canister, and does require filters, but it has the best suction of any vacuum I've tried.

Also, I would buy a newer used one, like from Ebay or craigslist or something. New, they retail for thousands of dollars, but i picked up a used one for $500, and since they have a lifetime warranty on them, there are no worries about quality.

I've seen 25 and 30 yr old models still working in great condition.

I've had mine for a couple of years now and wouldn't trade it for the world.

My sister has had both an Oreck and a Dyson. She had the Oreck first and then caught Dyson fever and got one of those. She hated it and threw it out. Another good thing about Orecks (I have one also) is that parts can be replaced and serviced. Once your Dyson is done, it's done from what I've heard. Also, Orecks usually come with an extra thing; I got a handheld vacuum with attachments. Good luck!!

I've had 2 Orecks and have HATED them. Never had a Dyson, but LOVE my Hoover!

My mom has an Oreck and swears by it. I have a Dyson and swear by it. Recently I was over at my mom's house helping clean up for a party. She had a rug that was covered in dog hair. I used her Oreck - it didn't pick up a thing. We changed her bag - still nothing. I brought my Dyson over and tried it. We could see where we had gone over it with my Dyson - and the canister was practically full when we were done. I'm pretty sure that she'll be getting a Dyson soon - I know I love mine. Also, my kids lost one of the attachments, I looked for it forever. Finally I called Dyson to find out how much it would be for a new one. They sent it to me for free since it was still under warranty. Have I said, I love my Dyson?

We have a Rainbow and love it! It cleans everything up so easily! Plus, has many other functions as well.
