Hi Moms, I'm back again with another product question. I am wondering if any of you have babies with REALLY sensitive skin and if you have found a sunscreen that works well for your children? My daughter has extremely pale skin and although she is not showing signs of eczema yet I have it and find literally ever sunscreen on the market irritating (including Aveeno). I just want to start out with the best one there is. Thanks again :)

I have a son who cannot tolerate any sunscreens, even the ones made for sensitive skin make him break out in a rash. The only one we can use is California Baby. It's really the best and it's at Whole Foods.

California Baby makes the top rated, safest, chemical-free sunscreens. They make an unscented and a scented 30 spf. My friend loves it and uses it on herself and her daughters. They have eczema prone and very sensitive skin.

Hi J.,

I am a holistic esthetician and can say that one very important thing to consider is searching for a sunscreen at a health food store. Many commercial sunscreens are very toxic and highly allergenic even if they say 100% natural. Many people and young children especially get rashes and eczema like symptoms after using the ones like Aveeno which claim to be all natural and hypoallergenic. My boys are also very fair and I have found that a few health food store brands have been fine for their skin. My favorite one is Burn Out Clean and Clear Zinc Oxide Sunblock . It goes on really smooth , it's 32 spf and no rashes. Another brand that is good is alba although the one with minerals for the block (zinc) goes on a little pastey. My other favorite is California Baby as they make a stick for their noses and ears making the face much easier to apply. Whichever brand you choose for you keep in mind that the sunscreens which use chemicals to absorb the UV rays are not good for people with sensitive skin and you should always look for a block instead which uses minerals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to actually block the rays. Good luck to you and I hope you find something that works for you!
Sincerely,
S.

Badger is the most non-toxic. Go to www.cosmeticsdatabase.com and research different sunscreens.

I use the California Baby on my daughter's face and Lubiderm w/ SPF on her body. I use the Lubiderm on myself (also very sensitive). the CA Baby is pricey which is why I use it on her face and the less expensive option on her body. I'd also highly recommend getting her a UV protectant shirt for times you she is playing outside (park or swimming) so you don't have to cover her in sunscreen as it really isn't great for our skin.

You could look at the safemama web site. They have a "cheat sheet" on sunscreen, as well as other baby products. Best of luck!

I recommend UV Natural for Baby. It is expensive, but worth the price. It has no added fragrance, no preservatives, is moisturizing and made with grape seed, and green tea, as well as natures finest oils. I have four children, some with more sensitive skin, two who have dealt with exzema, and this sunscreen has been fine on them. They make an adult one which works great too! Best of luck!

Hi J.,
Both of my daughters have sensitive skin and ecczema, like you I'm careful with what products we use on their skin. Many of the common brands have alcohol (which we find drying) in them including some "sensitive", "determologist recomended" ones. Watch the ingredients label.
We like products by California Baby. They have an SPF 30+ non-chemical Sunscreen that we use. Their products are a bit pricey compared to common brands but we find it worth it. www.californiababy.com

I use a product from mercola.com. It has talc to reflect the sun rays. It is void of the prabens and other estrogenec chemicals. I have rosacea, so getting beet red is not good for me, weather I need the vit d or not.

As far as vit D goes, There have been a few scientists and doctors who have researched vit D overdose and have posted it to the web. vit D is a steriod vitamin.

People's d levels should be checked before supplementation and then a month or two after. Severe increases of Vit D supplementation and then defieciency still continuing a few months later, signals disease.

There is a bacterium, that can hijack the vitamin d receptor.(hence the low vit d levels) So no matter how much D you take, it cannot get into the cells. So you just feed the bacterium and grow it.

Hi J.,
I like the Rodan + Fields Dermatologists sunscreens... I was introduced to the line at Nordstrom.
I know my girl friend likes the "SOOTHE" Sunscreen from Rodan & Fields for her little girl.
It has a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks UVA & UVB rays and is soothing to the skin. Anyone who is sensitive can use it!
Plus it is 100% money back guarantee if you have any problems..pretty great!
I loved the line so much that I decided to rep for them so I can get a discount. Email me if you'd like more info. on their products & how to get a discount ____@____.com

We use Paula's Choice (www.paulaschoice.com). She's the woman who wrote that book, Don't go to the Cosmetics Counter without me. My cousin's kids have allergies and she's the one who turned me onto it. We get both a light spray as well as a creamy waterproof lotion depending on what we're doing. These are the ones we like.

When my daughter was little we lived in southern Cal, so we put spf 50 on her. She was PALE (nearly transparent skin, it seemed.) She would break out in a rash every time we put sun screen on her. We tried EVERYTHING.

It was the SPF level that was the issue. Once we dropped down to 15 she was fine. We had to put it on more often, but it worked. We liked the Coppertone Sport (blue bottle) because it wasn't greasy (not the spray on...that irritated). She used it today. She can handle spf 30 now.

Hope that helps,
Stephanie

I like the California Baby sunscreen. It is organic and my daughter was very sensitive to certain bubble baths and lotions when she was very young. She is very fair and we live at a high elevation so we need to put sunscreen on her every day in the summer and on sunny days. The sunscreen is very thick, so a little goes a long way. They sell it at Target, Whole foods or on the internet.

Hi there-
Below is a post from Dr. Neustaedter on a forum I belong to, he is a respected holistic pediatrician, I'm going to look for it at Whole Foods today. (= K.

"The only sunscreen I trust is UVNatural which contains coated micronized zinc oxide. I do not recommend titanium dioxide. Their products are not greasy and they are waterproof. Usually available at Whole Foods. Try to get the ones without lavender."

California Baby makes a sensitive sunscreen SPF 30 and it doesn't have a lot of chemicals in it like other sunscreens. It comes in a stick, also. The catch is it's expensive!

You can get it at Target or Whole Foods or on-line drugstore.com.

Good luck!

Hi J.,

Since no one has made a comment on Vit D, I thought I will. Do look at the Vitamin D Council website for info on this amazing Vit and how sun phobia has gotten most of us into deficiency now. Vit D is made by our body but only if one is exposed to UVB rays ie. suncreens and glass block these rays. If you live in northern Ca, you will not get any of these rays in winter the sun is too low. I have been testing my patients for Vit D levels (25 Hydroxy Vit D) and almost everyone tested in the last month or so have shown below normal levels. I do recommend supplementation as Vit D is so important for the immune system, prevents many cancers, good for autoimmune conditions, eczema is one of them ..look it up in the Vit D website, http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/. I have thrown away my sunscreen. So many sunscreens contain chemicals you do not want on your body and this website is very useful for checking out skin care products for safety..http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/index.php?nothanks=1. Hope that's helpful.
