Tutors in the Van Nuys/sherman Oaks Area

Hi, Ya'll,

I was in need of a tutor for my son who is in 8th grade. He needs the assistance in most areas of his studies, and high school testing will be coming up soon, and I want him to feel prepared and confident. I have come across a few tutors, but they're charging $100 an hour. I don't even make that and I'm a "professional". And I sort of feel that sitting there, commenting a few times on doing a few problems doesn't warrant a $100 an hour. I guess I'm looking for a tutor who is engaging and charismatic to get a 13 year olds attention. And mostly I want to see results. IS THIS ASKING TOO MUCH? And if that someone does cost $100, then so be it.

What can I do next?

Hi, P.,

Where are you finding your tutors?

I have a teaching credential in math, a teaching certificate in English, a bachelor's in math, master's in finance, and 15 years experience teaching (primarily teenagers), and I charge $35/hour.

Even tutoring centers, such as Sylvan, don't charge this much!

Have you talked to your son's teachers about tutoring? Some schools offer free tutoring at school after regular school hours.

Call me if you are still looking for a tutor. Ihave a PhD in education (right now I do curriculum work part time from home). My specialty is literacy and learning English as a second language but I do tutoring at my husband's middle/high school. We can work out a very reasonable fee. For $100 an hour that person better be doing about 3 hours of prep for the tutoring. Ridiculous.
take care,

Hi P.,

I've heard that Jessica Rutten is good - though I'm not sure if she just specializes in Spanish. Here is her email: ____@____.com She's located in Sherman Oaks

Wow. I don't have a tutor for you. I just wanted to reply because I tutor and charge $80 an hour. I am a "professional" as you put it. I have a M. Ed. and 15 years of classroom experience. I'm also extensively trained in working with children who have different learning styles. I think my qualifications are worth the money I charge.

Also, I have to pay a babysitter out of that salary and I don't charge for travel time or mileage. When you break it down I make about $45 for my hour of work. I don't think that's unreasonable.

I'm sorry. I know you were looking for helpful advice. I don't mean to lecture. The "professional" comment just really set me off.

Good luck with your search. If you want to pay less you can use a testing service and take your son to them or try college students.

Hi P., I am not in the Sherman Oaks/Van Nuys area but when my kids needed a tutor at one point (they are junior high) we paid $25.00 per hour. I think $100.00 is excessive.
check with your son's school, your place of worship and friends for recommendations. I might also suggest that you son tutor with a buddy-my son and his friend did this, it cut down on costs, commuting (one of us dropped off, the other picked up) and in general worked out for us beautifully.
Good luck, J.
