Tubal Ligation Help

Hello - I had my tubes tied when I had my second C-section and have had no issues, no physical issues anyway. I am found myself being sad though that I cant have anymore children and that has been a little hard for me.
Otherwise nothing!

I had a tubal ligation with my second c-section as well. I would recommend it. I have not had any side effects from it at all. I have been told that 1 in 200 tubal ligations will fail??? So I always have that in the back of my mind that it is not 100%. Still for me it was a good easy option.

I know you've gotten a lot of advice, but just wanted to add my story. I made the decision to have my tubes tied during my second pregnancy. I was a repeat c-section so they did it right after my son was born. The doctor did ask as he was cutting me open if I still wanted the tubal. I had difficulties at the end of both pregnancies so DH and I decided it was the best. We also didn't want more than 2 children anyway. As far as the "what if one dies" theory, having another child can't replace the one that was lost so that didn't have an impact on us. I didn't notice any difference in recovery except my 2nd c-section was faster than my 1st. No regrets at all. Good luck with your decision.

Hi, I had a tubal during my repeat C-section in March of 2006. I have been quite happy with this form of birth control and have not had a pang of regret. I only wanted ever to have 2 kids and if I did want another I would choose to adopt.
The advantages of being on your own hormones is that you get to experience the hormone surge which makes you a bit more horny (not like before kids but anything helps). For me, the disadvantage is that I have to have a full period every 25 to 26 days which makes me miss the pill a little bit.
I am all for a tubal during a c-section otherwise I think it is the guys job. Take care, you will love it! S.

Hi A., I had my tubes tied after my second c-section also. No regrets--and they get a nice clean view too. I didn't notice any difference in recovery. If you're sure you don't want any more, it's a great way to go:-) Good luck!

I run several support groups for women wanting a tubal reversal, I can tell you from personal knowlegde and hearing the stories of 1000's of women, PTLS is VERY REAL, symtoms vary from woman to woman but they are often serve enough to effect their lives and that of their families. Hormones are effected. I had my tubal reversed and have been blessed with two daughters. It was not a cheap or easy process. Stuff happens that you didn't plan on, you don't really know how you will feel if life changes on you till it happens. I have heard some sad stuff. Reversals work best on women that only clips put on, please if you do this, do not allow any burning or cutting of the tube. A man's has a much higher sucess rate of being reversed.
Good luck and I have to add this, do you really think being PG is a good time to be making this choice, honestly right now you have your hands full, it does get better. I know several women that wished they would have waited to make the choice, when they weren't PG and stressed with young kids.

I had my tubes tied moments after #2 was born via #2 C-Section. The recovery for me was much faster than the first C-Section. Every so often I would feel a twinge of pain where the tubes were healing. Nothing major... kind of like when you get pinched.
My advice would be to do it... IF you are getting it done at the same time as the birth. I would not want to go back and get cut on again. If that is the case... it's the hubby's turn to go under the knife! He can take one for the "team".
I have heard and read about people having issues with heavy bleeding or hormonal imblances after getting their tubes tied. I can honestly say that my periods are heavier than before. However... I had my girls pretty close together and I am now in my mid 30's. My mother also had fibriod issues. I am not sure if my changes are due to my older age, DNA, or the tubal.
If I had the chance to do it agin... I would in a HEART BEAT.

I have not had it but my sister has. She regrets cause she as her periods close together, they are heavier, and more painful. Also, do to her son passing away she regrets having it done. She is not sure she wants more but she is considering it, he was her baby. I know it's more expensive and harder to reverse it than your husband going in a reversing. That is whay my husband did. So I hope this helps. The biggest is knowing you are done and thinking about all situations cause you don't know what will happen.

Ok I am speaking from experience. I had made the decision to have my tubes tied along with the C section when my second daughter was born and I wish I hadn't. Not because I want another baby because I really don't but because of the side effects I have experienced since the procedure was done. I now have HORRIBLE periods very heavy and lots of clots. I also have cramps now with my periods that were mild before have me doubled over in pain and taking Vicodin the first couple days of my period every month so that I can even function. Another side effect I have experienced is unwanted hair growth on my face. I am constantly plucking out VERY coarse hairs all over my face to keep them at bay but they come back with a vengeance. The clotting I get now can be the size of a fifty cent piece and its scary. I went on birth control a while back to help and it did but I am not great about taking pills every day and one of the reasons why I had my tubes tied was so that I didn't have to worry about birth control. Not every woman has these side effects but I know more women that are just like me that have the same issues since the tubal.

I know you think its easier for you to just have it done while you are having your c section but I also want you to be aware that there could be long term side effects if you do.
Discuss your options with your husband and I do have to say that a vasectomy would probably be the better option.

Congrats on your new addition! I just had my second baby in May, another C-section, and had my tubes tied while they were in there. I had the same thought, "since you're in there, Doc, can you take care of it for good?" Makes sense. I bled longer in my recovery time...8 weeks instead of 6 weeks with my first baby. It's only been 12 weeks since the birth and proceedure, but so far, so good. I'm very happy I did it...I'm like the poster Vicki G, we felt 2 was enough due to population increases on our planet and also personal finances. We want to give the most we can to our two children, not stretch ourselves too thin with more then 2 kids.

Anyhoo, my family history with the Tubal is also good, another reason for my decision. My mom had it done around 25+ years ago, and has never had a problem.

I had my tubes tied nearly 10 years ago. My doctor went through my belly button so I have no scars to show it. I have always had some pain in my ovaries when I ovulate so I can't really say it's a side affect, however, since I had my tubes tied it seems a little more intense but nothing a few ibuprofen can't handle. I had very little discomfort during the recovery and no scars.
Otherwise, I love the freedom of not having to worry about getting pregnant again ( after 4 kids ) I also think my periods might be a little lighter and shorter...unless that's age related but I don't think so :-)
It also relieves some stress between you and hubby not having to take precautions!

I also had a repeat c-section and had them tie my tubes while I was still in surgery. It probably was only about an extra 5-10 mins longer in surgery and I got to hold my daughter w/ assistance while they did it. My husband,daughter,and I all left together and went back to my room when they were done. I had no complications and I healed just the same as I did w/ the first c-section. I may have been slightly more tender right after the fact but you don't notice much difference since you just had a c-section. My youngest is almost 2 yrs. We had no regrets and it saved my husband from the pain and having to take time off of work.

A., I had my tubes tied after my second child. I did not have it done right after I had her I went back. It was very easy...I went to the day clinic and was there at nine and home by four. They did it through a very tiny incision right near the lower part of the bellybutton leaving just the very tiniest scar.I have never had any problems. I had it done because i had some issues with my female organs that made it very hard to carry and deliver a child and we had the two and we were satisfied. Although 2 years from having them tied I ended up having to have a partial hysterectomy anyway due to severe endromitriosis (sp) and fibroid tumors that were just getting bigger. Everything was removed except an ovary.I do not regret that either.The doctor did have togo through the stomach to get everything instead of vaginally but he gave me a smiley right below my bikini line. I was only 25 so that was a big deal for him to be able to do it like that.

I think it helped my husband and my relationship too because there was not that threat of accidently getting pregnant...I had mine cauterized not just tied. The doctor agreed with us that it would be very h*** o* me and dangerous to have anymore children and should feel fortunate that we were able to have the two.

I say go for it...if you have any problems afterwards due to hormonol balance there is a great product totake that balances everything out and is completely natural. It is HRT made from plant derivities instead of horse urine. The name of the product is Phyto-B and it is sold on the internet..some doctors carry it in their office but it is cheaper online. You just cut four little tablets inhalf and melt them under your tongue once or twice a day.It takes care of hot flashes and any other symptoms that come due to hormonol imbalance.
It runs about $40.00 a month to take.Plus you do not have to worry about the side-effects of chemically made HRT.

I had my tubes tied 10 years ago after my 3rd c-section. I was bit sore for a few weeks, beyond the normal c-section sore but after that I didn't experience anything negative.

I had longer bleeding than most, I guess, but if you are already going inside, why not geterdone? You will be on healing time anyway. No problems after at all!

Hello- I had a tubal in March at OHSU and it went just fine. I was just groggy afterwards, of course. My boyfriend kept my two sons busy for a week or 2 after so I could recuperate. I only took a day or two off work. All is well and I'm glad I did it. Take care!

I had my tubes tied after the birth of my third child, making a combined family of six (yours, mine and ours). I had no side effects of it (medically) life went on as normal. My only problem was a regretted it later. I never really got over wanting another child. You need to make sure you never want to have more children.

I had my tubal in January of 07, I have had very irksome cycles in that I tend to only get at most 2 weeks of freedom from said cycles. I regret my tubal but that is due to the emotional havoc I go through on a monthly basis. Prior to this I didn't have any issues with hormones and now at my age(25)I am all kinds of messed up. Lol. I realize that my experience is not the norm but in any case I do wish you the best! Overall the actual procedure was fine on me and I have no issues with that aspect of it at all.

I just wanted to put in my personal experience about getting a tubal. I had my tubes tied after me daughter was born 7 years ago. I have regretted it ever since! I have had so many health issues and looking it into it now, have discovered that your whole endocrine (hormone) system works together and when one is coming up as a "misfire" or low than the other hormones kick in overdrive to make up for it. I am meeting with an endocrinologist now who would highly suggest against messing with your bodies natural hormones. The dr never told me about the negative effects that "could" happen after a tubal but she glorified the freedom of not having to worry about birth control, pregnancy, etc.......
I would definitely research all the negative aspects to having a tubal and think really hard about it. My husband and I were certain that 3 was all we wanted (he had one from a previous relationship, I had one and then we had one together) but when our daughter was 3 we realized that we truly wanted to have more. I checked into having a tubal reversal but discovered that due to all the medical issues that were brought on by having a tubal in the first place I am not a candidate. I would suggest that if you have even the slightest apprehension about having it in the first place that you shouldn't go through with it. I regret my decision whole heartedly and now i have to pay for my decision every day of my life!
I wish I had looked at it longer and harder before making that decision.

I just had a baby in June and had my tubes tied in July. I havent had anything happen yet because I am breastfeeding so I cant answer anything on that. My side is to make sure that this is it for you. I had them tied at number three. This decision was still SO hard to make even though I know realistically we couldnt afford anymore kids. I still get panic attacks sometimes thinking well what if I really was suppose to have one more. I dont want to be the devils advocate on the matter for you. But so far my side effect has been the panic attacks. Other then that I have felt fine. Good luck and congrats on the new addition coming!!!!

I had a tubal ligation immediately after my second child was born by C-section over 30 years ago.

With the demands of the increasing human population on our planet as well as the financial resources and time required to be a good parent I felt that having 2 children was plenty.

I've had no physical problems and have never regretted my decision.

I had a tubal ligation done with my 3rd c-section almost two years ago... After my baby girl was born, they were able to put me to sleep during the operation and I woke up in my room after they had stitched me up! Recovery was the same as when I had my 2nd c-section (the first was different because of the emotional trauma that went with having one in the first place, and the fact that I was so exhausted from all the labor.) At first there was some painful cramping when my body tried to ovulate, but I haven't felt that over the last few months so perhaps that's getting better. My periods have also become heavier but last only a few days whereas before they used to last several days. Overall, I am glad I had it done. I decided that experiencing the miracle of life 3 times was enough for me, and if we wanted to add to our family we could always adopt. We are actually in process of adopting a little girl from China and we couldn't be happier! My husband is thinking of getting a vasectomy as well, just to make sure... there is a slim chance of getting pregnant after a tubal, about the same chance as when you are on the pill. We don't want to take any chances because having a fourth baby would mean we couldn't go through with the adoption and we feel this is what we were meant to do.

I had a tubal when my daughter was 6 months old. It was very easy and not painful at all. I have had no side affects except that my periods have changed and have become more painful. I have heard that this has happened to many woman. I have also talked with 4 different woman doctors about this, they all say that it is my age. I was 37 when I had them tied, at that age and earlier, your body changes and so do your periods. I did not believe it then but I do now. My periods are still changeing, I'm 42 now.
Anyway, I would do it again.

This is advice from someone who has not had one BUT that you may be interested in...I have chosen not to get one because of history in my family. all of the women on my moms side that have had one done has had pretty annoying side effects, very heavy periods and more painful to say the least. But at the same time not one of the women on my dads side of the family has had really any problems what so ever. Coincidence I don't know but I have chosen since my moms side has very consistently had problems that I will not be getting one. So I would say it wouldn't hurt to see if other members of your moms side (assuming you can check) have had problems or not. I don't know if there is any medical backing to something like this but hey they link a lot of other womanly things to looking back at the moms side soo....

My sister was in the same situation as you are in. She has two kids both c=section. The second c-section they tied her tubes right after. That was 8 years ago and now she has horrible scar tissue and has to have it removed. The scar tissue was so bad it is overloading her other organs. Now she is diabetic, and was over weight prior (not sure though is the weight had anything to do with it)Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to here but that's what I've witnessed. Good luck!

I had it done following my c-section and didn't notice a thing. It's been over five years and I've had no trouble. No complications. No nothing.

(Except a TREMENDOUSLY grateful husband who didn't have to have a vasectomy!)

I did get pregnant again through in vitro. (I had the tubal done because of a genetic disorder I can give to my children. I wanted to make certain I didn't have any accidental pregnancies.)

My mother had her tubes tied after her last child and has always regretted it. It wasn't because she wanted more kids (she was 39 with 7 children), but because it messes with your hormones. She has been battling to keep her body hormonally normal ever since, and really really wishes she would have just had my dad do a vasectomy - a very simple outpatient procedure for a man. She is now in her late 60's, and still experiences negative effects of her tubal ligation. What a life sentence! I would seriously consider other options. Good luck.

I had a tubal during my 3rd c-section.

Talk to your doctor about side effects. My doctor mentioned none, however, my first 3-4 cycles around ovulation, I experienced a hot burning sensation. I couldn't even lay on my stomach to sleep. My periods were heavy, I just relate that to not being on BC pills. Ovulation was very obvious because the mucus volume was tremendous. The next 2-3 cycles were sporadic. I no longer have the mucus, which tells me I'm not ovulating anymore. I usually have a 34 day cycle, my last period was over 55 days ago and the one before that was 50 days. Most would be thrilled, however, I experience the PMS symptoms around 28 days.....lovely! I have also had an increase in hair growth in unwanted places along with facial acne. I probably would have still gone with the tubal knowing the possible results but at least I wouldn't have been so shocked by them. Good luck.

I've had four children, the last three were c-sections. I had my tubes tied with the last cesarean and have never once regretted it. It is a difficult recovery because they do have to move some things around to get to your tubes, but well worth it!

I had mine tied after the birth of our third child (after twins) and frankly I have not noticed any changes (positive or negative) that I can attribute to the procedure per se. You don't mention how old you are and I am certain your doctors have explained that once you do it, it is difficult to reverse (in case you ever wanted any more kids). But if you are really done, I find that not having to worry about birth control is the biggest plus of the whole thing.

I had my tubes tied back in Dec after our second child. I had him natural so had to go in for the surgery seperately. For me the worst part was the incision and the pain it caused, but if you have already had a c-section, you know what to expect. I do remember for a few months after my surgery some pains in the uterus area which I did not feel after my first child. A few times the pain was pretty intense, but was infrequent and faded away completely. I have not had any other adverse side effects (knock on wood) at this point. Good luck!

I had a tubaligation about 12 years ago, now I am seeking away to have it reversed, one that I can afford. I would suggest that you don't have it done, most women have a desire to have another child later on. I sometimes get depressed, especially now that my two kids are almost teenagers, I miss the years when they where smaller. Please reconsider, it is very expensive right now to have a tubiligation reversed can only imagine what it will be down the road. Pray hard about the situation before you decide, I know GOD would not want any woman to take away the ability he gave us to bare children, at the time I had mine done I didn't know this.
