Top of Stair Gates

In a few months you will have a toddler who will stand and shake that gate, so you really need one that screws in. Could you mount it to the wall (in a stud) on the top or 2nd step? or maybe just behind or in front of the moulding? If there is a hall leading to the stairs, you could also gate off the hallway rather than the stairs themselves. This is what we did in my back entry.

Do not use a pressure gate, it would be very unsafe!

They have "top of stair" gates that will screw into the sheetrock. Have had one at my house for 10 years and it's still in the wall.

I'm not sure if I exactly understand what you need but I needed a gate at one time for the top of a staircase that had (newell) posts on either side and did not want to put holes into the wood posts. I did a bit of research on-line and was able to find a solution.

J., I think that those cheap wooden ones from Target, etc are great! They just need to be postioned correctly and my 20 month old has never been able to knock them over!

There are clamps available so you don't have to screw into the wood. If you look at http://www.stairgatestore.com there are several varieties for different types of posts.
