Hello All.
I'm hoping one or more of you can shed a little light on this issue. My toddler (3 years old) has recently had several bouts of diahrrea, which has led to moderate to severe diaper rash. We've put him on a B.R.A.T. diet all week and just when we thought it had all cleared up and was gone, we went ahead and gave him a little mac 'n cheese and a small tortilla with a few pieces of seasoned fajita meat and cheese in it. Well, the next day, he was back at the diahrea and diaper rash. So we're once again on the B.R.A.T. diet.
We're not sure why he has developed this sensitivity to foods. Perhaps his food allergies are just now arriving? The only other thing I could think it might be is that we recently switched him from regular 2% milk to organic 2% milk. However, throughout the entire time he was on the B.R.A.T. diet (and improving), we were still giving him the organic milk and water. So we don't think it's the organic milk.
Has anyone else experienced this or something similar to it? We're seriously considering taking him to the doctor to see if he has some type of stomach flu that he just can't shake but wanted to know if anyone else had to deal with this yet.

TFR,
Jen

We went years not knowing what was wrong with my daughter and why she had a rash/diarrhea a lot of the time. This was our answer. If it is yours too, don't panic, there are many great resources for helping you plan menus and recipes out there.

Hope you find out what is wrong.

Sounds like he may have a wheat allergy. Keep a food Journal of what he eats and what his "output" results are. You need to take him to the Doctor and show her the journal. She may suggest a specialist to evaluate him. Good luck.

The diahrrea could be caused by lactose intolerance. It is not an allergy to dairy. The body just cannot digest the lactose sugar in dairy products--which can manifest in a case of diahrrea. You might try switching your child's milk to a lactose free variety (which you can still get organic at Whole Foods-if that is important to you) to see if that makes a difference. Good luck.

Hey J.: There is a ton of dye and preservatives in mac & cheese... So it might be a reaction to ingredients besides milk. My DD has a confirmed allergy to cow's milk and my dear, dear husband decided he should reconfirm it himself and let her eat cheese... which resulted a huge red diaper rash which made her cry when she pee'd (Thanks honey!). Your description of his rash reminded me of my daughter's reaction to when she ate that cheese.

Since he is ok with drinking milk, perhaps your son has an allergic reaction to certain cheeses more than others... Or the curding enzymes? or the dye? Perhaps he is having a reaction to the mold that makes cheddar...? Was the cheese he ate a processed cheese or an aged cheese? I have one friend who told me that her son reacts to processed cheese differently than regular cheese... My suggestion is to stay on BRAT until better, then hold off cheese and yogurt... introduce plain noodles and plain tortia (to test for a flour/gluten reaction), then introduce meat (since that was part of the meal he reacted to), then introduce yogurt (to confirm no milk allergy) and lastly introduce cheese and see if he has a reaction. And of course, throw out the butter/milk that you used to make the mac & cheese in case it was slightly turning and he is simply reacting to that.
