I am seeking suggestions on what kind of tippy cups worked best for teaching your little ones how to drink. Any information on experiences of introducing the cup, how long it took to get them to actually use the cup w/o assistance and what kind of cups you used would be helpful. Thank you,
I appreciate any advice,
C.

I too use the Nuby's because my son likes the soft tip. But be forwarned, they do have a tendency to leak. Bright also uses the insulated playtex ones - he seems to like them OK too, but when he was just starting out the nuby's worked well. I did see that they have soft nipple sippies in some other brands. It took him about three months to get good at it. And somedays I swear he still has a hole in his lip. Chances are, you'll go through about a thousand before you find one she likes ;)

EDIT: He did like the ones with the handles best at first...he finally graduated to the "cups" without handles at around 12 months.

The Nuby cups with the soft top are GREAT!! They don't have handles, so they fit in cup holders but they are narrowwer in the middle for baby to be able to hold them herself! My son loved them and still does and they are only 1.74 at Wal-mart. Yeah I've bought several since I know the exact price!! LOL
We didn't start weening my son from his bottle until he was a year old and Nuby makes a Sports Sippy with a long soft nipple and it was almost like a bottle so my son gave up his bottle in one day! Good luck, and I hope it's as easy for you as it was with me!

My daughter liked the playtex soft spout cups with the handles, but my son would only use the Avent cups. Those have a spout that is easy to suck and after he got used to that particular cup he would use any kind of cup. Switching to the cup is hard. I found that going cold turkey works best. One day the bottle is just gone. Good Luck!

I've always used the Avent sippy cups and loved them. I started all my kids on the cup around 5 months. My experience has been the earlier you introduce it the easier it is for them to understand. Keep offering it to her-she will get it shortly. Make sure you tip it up for her when you help her-that will help her learn that she has to tip it up to get anything out of it.

For my daughter who was a complete pain to have get started on the cup we had to buy one out of a therapy catalog that cost us $15.00 AND IT WAS THE ONLY ONE SHE WOULD USE AT FIRST!! ARRRRGGG!! But my son wouldn't use the ones with the handles. I bought playtex ones for him and he did fine with them. I would say start with the soft tipped ones then try up from there.

I would advise not using tippy cups. Just move from breast/bottle to cup. Will it be messy? Yes - but your child will learn a lot faster to drink out of a regular cup. Otherwise - the tippy cup will just replace the bottle and it's not good for their teeth.

I didn't introduce my daughter to a sippy until she was a year old and went of the bottle. I knew she needed to get water somehow and I handed it to her and she loved it. I don't know if that is late but she never needed to get used to it she just did it. Since it has a no spill lid she didn't need any assistance 'cause if she dropped it she just picked it up and was on her way. good luck!

C.,
I used the playtex sippy cups. I started my boys when they were about 6 months. They did really well. At first I just put juice and water in them. When they were ready to graduate to just a cup and no bottles at about a year, I would only stick their formula/milk mixture until they were completely off of formula. I swore I would not put milk in their bottles. And I didn't. They still use their sippy cups when they are playing and want a drink to take with them.

My kiddos did really well with those Avent cups with the soft spout. That's actually what my son drank from first in terms of sippy cups. He also liked the Nuby cups, the spout is very similar to a nipple of a bottle. My daughter went straight to cups with straws. Playtex has sippy cups with silicone straws that she really loved when we first started introducing the cups to her. Also, the Playtex cups with the soft spouts. My daughter likes those as well. Good luck!! :) S.

I used the platex no spill sippy cup with both of my girls. I don't think I could have lived without them. Not only did they help the girls get off the bottle they saved my carpets!

What really helped for my son, was the nuby sippy cups, they have a soft latex spout on them. These were great. We used them for a couple months, then once he got used to those. He had no problem drinking out of any kind of sippy cup. The soft spout is easier to drink out of then the hard spout. Then oncce he learned how to drink from the cup it was no problem trying any kind of sippy cup. Hope this helps.

Actually I started my son on the nuby cups and the playtex and he did ok but then my daycare switched their to those disposible ones, and my son prefers those way over the fancey ones. So I'd say try those and see what happens, those are actually dish washer safe too and you get 6 for like $2-3. So very economical.

I just gave my daughter a plastic cup in the bath tub and let her practice drinking in the tub while she was getting clean. This solved the messy spill problem.

I would start with those soft top cups, and work my way towards the no lid cups. Its how I got my 2 older kids to drink out of a cup. I feel by the time they are 1 yrs old, they should be off the bottle, but you need to help them get to that point. My 2 yr old has been drinking out of a cup for quite a few months now, but only when she is at the table eating. If she wants to wonder the house, she has a sipper cup or a sports bottle that doesnt spill easily. Good Luck!

i used the nuby sippy cups, they have a soft top like the bottle, so i think it is easier to change from bottle to cup with them, after my girls got used to the cup i started using the regular playtex sippy cups.... my girls went from bottle to sippy in one day, i have twins, they did not fuss at all they just drank right from the sippy , so i just got rid of the bottles...

Hi, I have a two year old who used NUBY sippy cups and they had a soft tip so it wasn't a big change from the bottle and she loved the sippy cup. After using it for some time, about 6 months she changed to a cup before she turned two and had no problems. It is at all walmart stores and really cheap! Last for a long time too, I passed them on to my 10 month old neice and she does not want her bottle any more. Krys

We also use the Playtex soft tip ones. You can buy a set of 2 at Walmart for maybe $7-8... We only put formula or water in them b/c he wastes it most of the time. No juice or breastmilk until he figures it out! Sometimes he drinks it all and most times he only takes a few sips. Don't be worried if she doesn't take to it right away...keep trying at least once a day!

I'm not sure how to explain it so please bare w/ me. My son actually made the trasition from breast / bottle feeding to sippy cup pretty well. I just started to give him the sippy cup instead of the bottle. Till he gradually got use to the sippy cup. See example below:

1st week - once a day
2nd week - 2 times a day & so on.

There's one sippy cup (Playtex ?) that has a rounded lid where the part they drink from is up at the top. It kinda looks simular to a mountain. Anyhow, after a while I put him on the one w/ the reg. lid.

On sippy cups there is an age guide on the pkging some place. I usually use the Playtex brand. I've ran into problems w/ the other brands (leaks, etc.) Hope this helps.
