At a hair salon, are you REALLY not supposed to tip the owner? My hair stylist is the owner and she's never turned down my tip! lol

PS - she charges A LOT! I love her, been going to her for about 15 years (omg I'm old) but she is not cheap.

What can I do next?

My stylist owns her own one-woman shop and is 27-years-old. She is my daughter's friend. I absolutely tip her. I know how hard it is to start up and run a business. I appreciate her and how she does my hair, so my extra $$ expresses that. If she didn't allow me to tip her, I would probably buy her Starbucks gift cards because I know she likes that.

pppppffffftttttttt.
i always tip my stylist, a marvelous young businesswoman who owns her own shop and employs several local people. she does great work, and i want her to succeed. she has never turned down a tip.
nor has the owner of the nail salon i sometimes frequent.
there are probably some high-end shop owners who still politely decline gratuities. that's cool.
but i always offer.

Owners do not work on tips but like any tip, if you want to give one, they won't turn you down.

I always understood that the practice of tipping existed to supplement the low wages paid to employees in certain service industries. Since the salon owner (or restaurant owner) is not paid a wage and sets their own prices then I wasn't sure if they should be tipped or not. My stylist, who is the owner does accept my tip. The owner of a restaurant I like to eat at does not accept a tip. I do not like the whole system of tipping. It is confusing and often unfair. I wish everyone was just paid a fair wage.

I tip my stylist and she owns her own place.

I would never not tip anyone who provides a good service owner or not. I am willing to pay for quality and make sure she knows I appreciate her.

My motto is " never go cheap"

Traditionally you are NOT supposed to tip the proprietor of any business. It's counter to what a tip IS. However, I think most of that meaning has been lost and/or shifted over the years and it seems like most people happily pocket the extra money. I'm sure they don't claim it on their taxes OR add it to their business accounts, which makes it technically illegal, but I guess that's their issue, not yours.

If you WANT to tip the owner, go ahead, but you should not feel obligated by a sense of social grace... it really isn't necessary by any stretch of the good manners imagination. :)

Why do people think the owner wouldn't be out in front? Or not styling hair at all? In all salons I've ever patroned the owner ALWAYS is out front styling with his/her employees. They take the tack that they can't ask their employees to do anything that they themselves wouldn't do. My current stylist is the do-it-all-guy, and he owns the salon. His staff respects him and likes him, and you can tell they look up to him because he does what they do.

That's part of why I tip him. As I said before, he and his husband have to pay their bills like anyone else, and I don't assume that they're making money hands over fist even with a very successful salon.

A long time gf of mine does the hair of my entire family. She owns her own swank salon, rents 7 chair and 2 nail booths, is a very successful business woman. However, she's also an awesome person and a brilliant hairdresser whom I adore, so you better believe I tip her well. She's tries to fight me about it, psh too bad.

A tip is a way to say you truly appreciated the service provided. Tips are paid to people who serve you either it being hair salon, nail salon, restaurant, dog groomer, lawn care, house keeping, taxi driver, etc.

The owner of these businesses are still providing you with a valuable service so to me I don't believe it matters if the owner personally did the service or not. I always tip well when I am satisfied with the level of service I have received. A tip is not an automatic thing either but must be earned and the fee for the actual service may or may not be considered when I give a tip.

When I was a teen I was told by the owner of a salon that you aren't supposed to offer a tip to the owner, even if they are doing your hair. He said it as if it was a faux pas on my part and sort of whispered it to me. Sounds like it's not universal though, so do what feels right to you.

I have heard that before. However, it is common for the bride to tip all the individual bar tenders, DJ's, videographer, and photographer's. Most of those companies are self owned.

I guess it is just an opinion.

The owner would be the person in the back and not doing hair. A stylist is anyone working a chair whether they own the salon or not. I'd never not tip the person doing my hair.
