Ten Week Old Baby New to Spit Ups

My son started spitting up around 6 weeks old and spit up constantly for months - he is now 6 months old and it has slowed down but he is not completely rid of it - the doctor was not concerned b/c he was gaining weight (he is actually now 23 lbs at 6mos) and didn't cry at all when it would happen - we tried all the tricks, eating upward, cereal in the bottle, changing formula but in the end we excepted some babies just do it so we bought lots of rags and lots of carpet cleaner and extra love :o) good luck

Like many other responses, it's best to connect with your pediatrician. It could be GERD (gastro esophical reflux disease) and antiacids will potentially provide relief. My little guy had it -- he's 18 months now -- and it can be quite uncomfortable for your little person.

Call your doctor now. Bring your son in to be evaluated, he'll probably need an ultrasound. Boys sometimes have a blockage that causes this. Just rule it out to be safe. Is it projectile? That another indicator. Even if your son does have a blockage it's easily correctable, but if not treated can become serious due to fluid loss, lack of nutrition. I would like the doctor to tell you nothing's wrong and to just switch formulas, but just be on the safe side. My daughter ended up needing the most expensive type of formula there is. It's actually predigested. Sometimes soy formula works. I got into debt but had no choice. I was "too rich" for WIC but really didn't have anything extra. I had planned on breast feeding but it didn't go well and I stopped at 11 weeks after becoming suicidal from a medication that increases your milk supply but also can lead to severe depression. They thought my daughter had that problem. They said it's more common in boys then girls and doesn't usually show up until 10 to 12 weeks. After several formula changes & the guilt of not breastfeeding because no matter what anyone else told me I was sure that was what made my baby sick, she started doing fine. My son started to spit up around that age and it just subsided about two weeks ago. He is 11 months old. It is hard to say. Is he breast or formula fed? Have you asked the pediatrician? I have been told that it takes awhile for their digestive system to develop. I hope this helps.

My child spit up all the time when she was a baby. I found if I fed her and didn't let the bottle go on e then that help with the spit up. or I would sit her up for a good 30 min after feeding her. Even after she burped I will still help her to get another one out if she needed it.

I feel your pain my son who is now 14m old had the same problem. I did everything you did: sat him up, didn't move him around for 30min, burped him often, mylacon drops, changing formulas 2x, etc.
My pediatricians said it was reflux & that it should go away by 6m if not then antacids are prescribed: mylanta, pepcid. My son stopped before 6m & didn't go as far as the antacids but my sister in law had the same problem with her son & he was on the antacids for a bit & then once he began eating the reflux subsided.
Take heart its very common for babies to have this, there is nothing you can do to stop it it will eventually go away, just be patient & have spit TOWELS ready to catch the spit up & make him as comfortable as possible.
Also I used supplement his bottles with water because of the spit up just to keep him full, but ask your pediatrician first.

I wouldnt take any chances and bring him to the doctor for possible gastro intestinal problems (acid reflux or milk allergy). sometimes they develop alittle later from when they are born. if your baby doest get any better and the doc insists its nothing... tell him you want a second opinion from a gastro specialist...stand firm.... my doc insisted my son was fine at 7-8 weeks and this was anormal routine (burping and spitting up)...my son ended up in a childerns hospital for over a month hooked up to a machine with a feeding tube and was on it for several months because he had a milk allergy and reflux. i dont mean to scare you but i would go to the doc and a specialist just to make sure. good luck... another thing that is a huge red flag with spitting up is if your son doesnt gain weight...keep an eye on it.

I have 2 boys. My oldest is 4 and my youngest is 20 months. BOTH of my boys spit up. My oldest was the king of spit up. He really did a lot. My younger did as well, but not as much as my big guy.

You didn't say if you are nursing him or if he is formula fed. I nursed both my boys. My ped checked them out and she was very calm about the spit up issue. She told me that not only are babies digestive systems immature, but the muscle that is supposed to hold food down when they burp (boy, I'm just using all the proper medical terms, aren't I...ha) isn't fully developed yet either. She said it usually strengthens between 6-9 months which is exactly what happened with both my kids.

The other thing...again I don't know how your baby is being fed...with my first I was nursing him CONSTANTLY...he was not on any schedule and any little peep he made I fed him. He was the CHUBBIEST baby ever and I feel now that I definitely over fed him. He needed to be fed on a schedule. My youngest I fed on a schedule. He still spit up but not nearly as much. Anyway...that's just my experience. Next time you go to the doctor just ask.

My little guy (7 weeks now) started spitting up more than normal a couple of weeks ago. He is gaining weight and totally healthy and when I mentioned it to the doctor they said I could switch formulas if I wanted to but it probably wouldn't make much difference. You should put a call into the doctor and see what they say but I wouldn't worry too much. My one year old went though the same thing. He was on the Enfamil "for babies that spit up alot" and he still spit up. He gained weight just fine and by the time he turned 7 months or so it stopped. Stock up on Burp Cloths and extra clothes and good luck!

I am not an expert but it sounds like he might have reflux. If there is pain after eating or you notice that after eating he gets fussy when you lay him down, he may be affected. Ask your doctor, they could help.

Well are you breastfeeding or using formula? I have a 8 week old myself and he is my first child. I have read that some times they do that because they get air inside while drinking the milk. What helped me when giving him the bottle, I'll give him 1 oz and then try to burp him and then feed him again. This way he doesnt spit up as much.

my youngest did this too, just keep doing what your doing by keeping him upright after eating. It should ease up by 6-8 months. Just be sure to have lots of burp cloths around, I even used recieving balnkets as burp rags. But naturally consult you doctor. there is also something that can happen to babies this age where the stomach muscle blocks the opening from the esophogus into the tummy. it's really rare but could happen and if it does there is a simple surgery they can do to fix it, my nephew just had it done. definitely ask the doc about it, better safe than sorry.
