I think my 2 year old is teething because he is miserable with a runny nose and this morning he has been coughing. Could it be from swallowing mucus from teething? Or should i call my ped? My kids really never had teething issues, so im i bit confused. Is it a cold or virus or just teething? He has been very irritable for periods in the day and night, but other times he is fine. He is putting his hands in his mouth, so thats why i think its teething. I gave him Tylenol but it didnt seem to help. Im going to try a frozen wash cloth too. Any other suggestions? Does it sound like teething?

What can I do next?

It could be seasonal allergies. Our pediatrician put my 1 year old son on an allergy medicine (after a round of antibiotics failed to get him better) and he is doing much better. This is the worse allergy season on record and even people who don't typically react to outdoor allergens are having trouble. I was reluctant at first to start the allergy med, but he had runny nose (clear mucus) and a cough for over a month. His symptoms were worse at night and early in the morning. It may be teething, but if it persists for too much longer, I would talk to the pediatrician.

The runny nose is probably contributing to the coughing, he may have a cold in addition to the teething, that would be my guess. It totally sounds like both! I wouldn't worry too much unless you notice him having trouble breathing or making wheezing sounds. Tylenol doesn't help my daughter much with teething, but baby Motrin works wonders! I think because it helps reduce the swelling. Also, as far as teething toys goes, the Sophie the Giraffe is a great one to use, you can win one for free here, http://sproutreviews.com/2010/05/12/teething-hurts-sophie... I hope the Motrin helps, it's my lifesaver!

Doctors go both ways. A virus is a virus and teething is teething. That's my take. Teething is a convenient excuse to drop a sick child off at daycare and just call it teething. Not saying you are doing that LOL.

One time someone theorized for me the idea that a child might be more susceptible to viruses while teething because they put even more things in their mouths than they already do and their immune system might be low from the teething. I can't personally understand why the immune system would be low just because some teeth are breaking through the skin.

As far as the teething pain goes, I feel you. My grandson is a bad/irritable teether. But he's been cutting 2-3 at once for weeks. And yes, he's had a virus that came through the daycare. But I never once thought the runny nose wasn't a virus.

You may want to call your pediatrician to see if it's allergies.

I have heard opinions go both ways. Some say teething causes cold symptoms in some children. I have a friend who says her son got diarrhea and diaper rash every time he teethed. My pediatrician says he isn't sure teething can cause cold symptoms and a fever. So it is anyone's guess really. I would say in this case the symptoms are more severe than just as a result of teething and I think your son has a small cold.
