My 11 month old daughter has had a fever from 102-104 all weekend. She does not act sick. she did have an exploding diaper on saturday none on sunday and another exploding diaper today. Yesterday her eye started oozing and was crusted shut today but my MIL (BS) said that her eye is doing much better. MIL said that she is doing ok is eating normal but not drinking much. She takes a little longer naps than normal but that could be from the tylenol. Other than that she is acting normal. Not really sure what is going on. I dont know if its her teeth or if she is coming down wth something. Any suggestions??????

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your quick responses!!!! yesterday I decided to pick up some infant ibuprofen (SP?) and alternate that with the tylenol. When I went to pick her up she was running around grandma's house terrorizing and her fever had subsided. I alternated the tylenol and ibuprofen every 3 hours and she drank 16 oz of pedialyte last night. She had a normal wet diaper this morning and her temperature is back to normal. She had a rough night but this morning I feel that she is "better". It must have been a viral thing combined with allergies. Thanks again for everyones quick response. I LOVE THIS BORED!!!
Nikki , you may want to find a new dr. I have never ever heard such ridiculous mumbo jumbo as your teeth dont hurt when they come in! WOW!!!!

Hum, in my experience with my boys - teething fevers were low grade. I never saw that high of a fever associated with teething. Sounds like some sort of virus to me. Try to keep pushing the fluids.

First of all I must say I would not necessary listen to everything you hear on these post because I completely disagree with some of what has been said.

When my daughter was teething (And yes she WAS TEETHING) she was about 9 1/2 months. She had a fever of 102 for about three days. She had a little bout of diahrea and eventually got a diaper rash as a result. It was a horrible time. She always gets a lot of crusties in her eyes while she sleeps but never to the point where it crusted shut or "oozed". All while this was going on, if she wasn't getting a diaper change, she acted perfectly fine as well. She was acually as sweet as as can be. She ate fine too but kept putting her hands in her mouth. As far as drinking, make sure whatever you're giving her is not too cold.

I was giving my daughter Tylenol and it was helping but I changed to Infant Motrin because it not helped the fever but it also has the anti-inflammatory which helped her gums. We also used Baby Orajel as needed (when she did seem fussy) typically at bedtime. Her tooth popped out a couple days later and altogether it lasted for about a week.

I don't know how things are in Utah but here in Ca. everything is in bloom and allergies are rampant. This could be affecting her eyes and causing the crust. You might want to try a humidifier to clear the air of dust and allergens. Remember, crusties are a protectant, its just her immune system working overtime. Keep on eye it (no pun intended) to make sure it's not something more.

Anytime a baby has a 103 fever or higher it worries me so I would at least shoot a call over to your pediatrician just to see what they have to say. It does not necessarily call for an appt.

Nikki is partially right - partially not. In some sense "teething" is a myth. It can cause discomfort - so no, it is not pain free. But it is true that most other symptoms that get blamed on teething have nothing to do with teeth coming in. Fever, diarrhea, drooling, etc. are caused by other factors from normal development to allergies & viruses. There are some studies which support a slightly raised temperature (not 102-104) for a very brief time period (less than a day) which may be connected to teething, but even that is controversial. Bottom line - if your child is having a high fever or other symptoms, it is NOT due to teething. The only thing teething produces is some pain....and teeth.
So glad your daughter is doing better!

if her eye is oozing it could be allergies. as for the fever if she is good now it may have been a virous. My DD had the same thing minus the eye goop last week she broke out in a rash all over her neck and torso and had loose bm all weekend today the rash is gone and her bm is getting firmer. If she is acting okay just let it run its course. also you may want to alternate between tylenol and motrin. I notice that tylenol does not bring the fever down as quickly as mortin does. get her going on pedilite also so no dehydration happens. if it goes longer than a few days call your pedi. or if she spikes another fever. gl

My 10 month old son had the same thing about 3 weeks ago. I called our pedi. and he said it was a viral thing going around. No need to see him since with viral infections, you have to just let them run their course! My son also had the eye gook, but never crusted shut. He advised that we keep him hydrated and alternate between tylenol and motrin every 4-6hrs to help with fever. As far as fever goes, it's our body's natural defense againt germs, infections etc! So, our pedi says as long as it doesn't go beyond 104 there's no need to get all freaked out! Especially if the child is still eating and drinking normally. As long as she's not pulling on her ears and her temp is below 104, she should be fine. Remember, a child's fever can last 3 days without breaking. If it goes longer than 3 days, I would call your pedi! It's your choice if you should call your pedi, but I hope I eased your mind!

Is Nikki G kidding me!! How does it not hurt!!??? I still have my wisdom teeth in and they are cutting through and HOLY DOUBLE HOCKEY STICK!!! I haven't had this kind of constant pain in a long time. Anyone that thinks that sharp teeth exploding out of soft tissue must not be very sympathetic at all.
Sorry that just bugs me. I Think you should call you ped and talk to a nurse. They could tell you a lot of things that we couldn't.
Oh and my allergy's here in Orem are killing me too. I haven't had crusty eyes but they have been bugging me and my head is super foggy.

if she has a fever of 102-104, she is not teething. usually a low grade fever accompanies teething. anything higher than 100.4 would indicate an infection. i would take her to the doc...

my daughter just had all of the same symptoms last week, (her fever was 100.4) and it was a virus, like other moms have posted alternate motrin and tylenol and keep her hydrated kenzy's lasted about 48 hours and i am sure the eye crust is allergies

Her eye crusting shut is her body expelling infection (like a runny nose only in the eyes). If her fever lasts more than three days I would take her to the doctor as her body is having trouble fighting off an infection or a secondary infection.

Sounds like your daughter is sick.

Also my pediatrician says that 'teething' is a myth, and I agree with him. It does not hurt when teeth grow in.

In all my years in childcare I have not seen teething run that high of a fever and with her eyes getting crusty it sounds like she is sick. You should take her to the doctor to see what is going on.

It could be teething, but it sounds like something a little more serious. Usually, with teething there is a low grade fever. I also don't remember my daughters having any problems with their eyes. Part of this may also be alergies. To be safe, I'd give the doctor a call.

It's an old "wive's" tale that teething causes fever! I would definitely guess she has pink eye and needs anitbiotics for that - as for the fever - that shows her body is fighting something and keeping her hydrated is essential. A quick trip to her Pediatrician will take care of the pink eye and they'll probably explain to make sure she stays hydrated especially as she's not drinking as much and having diaper blowouts! They'll probably also explain about managing the fever so she's comfortable until her little body's fought the infection. I hope she feels better soon!
