HELP! My 5 month old son seems to be teething and nothing I do seems to help. He chews on everything, drools, cries if anything touches his gums, and is just fussy in general. I am out of ideas on how to comfort him. How long does this last? It has been about 2 weeks and still no tooth, is this normal? Any suggestions and advice are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for the great advice! We truly appreciate it! We tried everything everyone suggested and he seems to be doing so much better! Still no tooth, but I'm sure we should be seeing one soon! Thanks again!

Go get those little food holders that they suck on and put an ice cube in it, otherwise try baby oragel it works wonders and they have day and night time formulas.

I feel your pain, my 10 month old is teething right now too. I give a half a dose of Tylenol and baby oragel. I also use Hyland's Teething tablets and they seem to do an ok job. The other thing that my son likes is to "chew" on a cold spoon. Use pop it in the fridge for a little while. He also likes to gum on a cold piece of celery. Sometimes you can re-direct his attention to something else that takes his mind off of the pain, something like read a book or play peek-a-boo. Good luck.

Hi K.. My 15 month son started teething around 5 months also. He was in so much pain for a few weeks before a tooth finally poked through. My pediatrician recommended the Hyland teething tablets. They are an all natural easily dissolvable pill. I would just rub them on my son's gums when he started to get a little irritable. They allowed him to sleep well and completely changed his entire attitude. I still use them now, especially as his molars are coming in. You can find the tablets at Whole Foods and King Soopers, in the baby aisle. Good luck!

You might try a vibrating teether. Our second son loved it. Also, I've never tried it, but if they have no teeth, I've heard you can give them a cold carrot stick to chew on. I have resorted to Tylenol when it's been really bad.

My daughter also starting teething early (symtoms appeared at 3 months, first tooth at 5 months) and we tried everything. Things that worked rally well were Hyland's Teething Tablets (found at Walgreens, Target, etc) cold damp washcloths to chew on, pacifiers dipped in ice water and infant's tylenol when it got really bad. We also found a soft vibrating teether at Safeway it was $11 but welll worth it. When your little one can chew, biter biscuits and teething cookies are helpful too. Beside that lots hugs, long walks, books and songs. Distraction is the key. Good luck and blessings!

Teething tablets did wonders for my son!! They are natural, work fast and did the job. Tylenol at naptimes and bedtimes seemed to help him too. They can teeth way before the actual tooth pops up. My son was the king of slobber, his shirts were soaked.

I have been told by numerous people that if we had to go through teething as adults, we would not be able to take the pain. My son started to teeth around 8 months. I brought him to the ped. because I didn't know what was wrong. He would scream all the time. The ped. looked in his mouth and said he was teething and that two teeth would come through within the week. That was July 3rd and my son FINALLY cut his first tooth July 24th. All the while in incredible pain. He still is a horrible teether. I know some kids who just wake up one morning with teeth and the parents never knew they were teething.

I agree with everything suggested. I would make sure to give tylenol before nap and bed time. Teeth tend to move the most while they are sleeping, so I would make sure to give something more then just teething tablets.

Good luck to you!

Hello K.,

I remember how valuable my nursing relationship with my babies were through teething. I found that nursing them whenever they wanted really helped. The comfort of being near me and moving their mouths and jaws in that soothing way was great.

We also liked the homeopathic teething gel by Hylands. There are absolutely no side effects. It is available at Wild Oats/Whole Foods stores and more places, I am sure, if you check on-line.

I remember they were also interested in chewing on a frozen wet washcloth sometimes.

Hang in there. ~T.

When my child was 3 months old she went into teething mode ferociously especially at night. What my hubby and I found (and even our day care lady now uses them when she has a teether on her hands)Is this little mesh baggie thing at Any store really I got mine at walmart. They are messy and a pain in the butt to open BUT and that is a very big but there... It worked beautifully for her. They usually come 2 at a time you fill them with cut up foods like bananas and stuff, throw it in the freezer then give it to them frozen. I used Any baby fruit already processed and just put a plate under it in the freezer till it froze. Applesauce was my kiddos favorite. Other things I was told to use are cut up strips of banana bread that has no nuts, frozen or frozen bagels or even frozen carrots. I never got the chace for trying that but who knows? Also at night we used Heel tromil and highlands teething tabs. She didn't like the taste of those but they melted so fast she had no choice.
