My 19 week old daughter is been unusually fussy and has been sucking on her bottom lip and when I rub her gums I don't feel anything but she bites on my fingers. Everything I read says she has begun teething. I would like to hear your experiences on how to deal with the teething (any recomindations) and at how long it took your child's teeth to come in? Does anyone recomend the mesh teething feeders?

What can I do next?

I was in a new mom support group and all of the 6 babies starting drooling a lot around 16 weeks but I don't think any of them got teeth until at least 8 months!! It is different for all babies and it takes forever it seems. When my babe got her teeth I could see them coming (but that is different for everyone too). We did not use anything for her teething (medicine, teething rings, etc). But, I did notice she woke up more frequently the night before they actually broke through.

My experience with both my kids is that they do start teething really early but nothing will happen as far as actual teeth coming for a while yet! I didn't use the mesh teethers...and typically 19 weeks would be too early to introduce any real foods other than the milk they are getting at this age. When the teething gets really bad I will give my kids a little infant tylenol or motrin (esp at bed time) but I don't like to medicate my kids so save that for when they are screaming mad. I did use a vibrating teether from "first years" w/ a handle and star on top. I think they are about $8 at Target but well worth it.

i used hylands best teething tablet on my kids it saids 2 desolve 4 tables under tongue but i use 1 tablet and i mixed it formula it works wonderful you can buy it at walgreens for about $4.00 it is made with nutral stuff and for some reason it relaxes the baby and the baby will go to sleep after taking it and you will have a less fussy baby.

my son got his firsh tooth at 16 weeks. Although 19 weeks is early, it sounds like teething to me. Orajel helps, as does something to bite on. I used refrigerated carrots, the fattest ones I could find, and I cut the narrow end off, so that there was less problem with him actually getting a piece off. A cold, hard carrot, and they are a little sweet, too. Good luck.

Sucking on the bottom lip is more indicative of hunger. And it's very normal for babies that age to bite and chomp on things, and NOT be teething.

As for the Mesh feeder She's much too young to attempt any sort of solid foods. The American Association of Pediatrics recommends No solid foods until 6months.

Baby chewies cold washcloths and teething rings will do just fine.

D. ~ Congrats on the first tooth! It sounds like it could be right around the corner...or maybe not if your daughter is like my two kids. My daughter showed teething signs for about 2 months before she got her first tooth at 5 months. My son had teething symptoms for 3 months before his first one showed up! He was 8 months old when he got his first.

Anyhow, a frozen washcloth works great. Also, my son does like his mesh feeder with ice in it. Most moms don't like to use ice, but I know that it works really well for my baby. I prefer not to medicate, but on those really bad days we use Motrin. You shouldn't give Motrin to a baby under 6 months...but Tylenol is fine. Just make sure you give the proper dosage.

Good Luck!

My daughter is 7 mo's old and just cut her first tooth, she had the same symptoms you described for probably 3 mo's prior. She likes the cold teething rings that go in the freezer, but it's really not useful unless she can hold it herself. I suggest what you do and rub her gums with your finger, if she get to where she seems she is in pain give her motrin, which is good for swelling. I did it maybe twice, only if she got real bad. The mesh teething feeders I really like, but you should wait until she is atleat 6 mo's old and has tried all her baby food to make sure there are no allergic reactions. I hope this helps.

Go to your local drug store and in the teething lane find teething tablets. They look like white birth control pills. You place them in their mouth and they dissolve instantly. I have 2 sons that teething time was the worst experience of my life. Wasted tons of money on everything until I found those. They saved my sanity!!!!

Yep, she is. We use Hyland's all natural teething tablets (buy ours from CVS or Walmart). It's hard to tell when they'll actually break through. It seemed like a month for my younger daughter, but only a couple of weeks for my older daughter. I do recommend the mesh teething feeders. We have one, and we put frozen fruit in it (nothing with tiny seeds, though).

My kids got their first teeth around 16 weeks. I used the hylands teething tablets, tylenol when it is really bad, a cold washcloth to chew on. I'm not sure that mesh teething feeder is good to use yet since she is too young to be eating fruit. ONce you have introduced fruit and veggies (probably around 7 mos) you can give her cold fruit in the teether.

As an alternative to Oragel, I use pure vanilla extract. My 3 did not fuss at all when i rubbed it on their gums. It helps with the discomfort much the same way as oragel does. We also used many refrigerated/frozen washcloths. They loved those.

those mesh teething feeders are great but your baby is too young for food, so I would try just putting an ice cube in there.

There is a homeopathic remedy for teething that works awesome, it's called Chamomilla. My son received an amber teething necklace as a gift and it seemed to help him, too.

Hey D.! My son has also been doing that for a while. It's really common and his tooth is still working to come in. He has a ring gel teether we keep in the fridge he likes to chew on, and keep an extra pacifier in the fridge. That gives him the sucking sensation of the pacy and the coolness. We also have a mesh teething feeder. I belive Sassy makes it...It's been a great way to not only cool the teeth but the baby can hold the handle and almost feed themselves! We've used watermelon in there. Good luck!

My son was about the same age when he got his first tooth. He HATES the baby Oragel and would freak out even worse with it. I had to get creative. I wet some wash cloths and put them in the freezer. He liked those. I would give him a small dose of Tylenol. What worked best was this all natural oil I get from a store online. You can shop at this store if another customer refers you. I can tell you more about it and do that for you. ###-###-####

Sounds like teething to me. My daughter started with some signs around 8 weeks but didn't get her first tooth until she was 6 months! So, it can take awhile. A dentist friend of mine told me it takes approximately 6 months for a tooth to move through 1 millimeter of bone. EEK!

If you can find some homeopathic teething gel (typically found at a health food store) that works pretty well to help with the irritation. I don't like oragel as it has all kinds of junk in it. Anyway, cold washcloths, putting a teether or paci in the fridge, and just giving her someting to chew on all day will help. The chewing on stuff actually helps cut the tooth through the gumline.

The best we can do is try to make them as comfortable as possible, remember they are uncomfortable and love on them alot.

Dear D. G.,

It surely sounds like she's teething to me, too. A really low cost teether is to get a clean wash cloth, soak it to be fully wet with clean cold water and then squeeze out as much as you can and throw it in the freezer for a few hours. You will have to hold on to it for her because she is too young for that cold. Do two or three the first time so that you have more ready when that first one gets too warm. When it gets warm, you can rinse it well and put it inside a baggie to refreeze or just get another clean one and repeat the process.

With one of my daughters just using a teething gel was enough to get her by but the pain was too great for the other daughter and I had to use acetaminophen _AND_ teething gel to get her by. The doctors say that they should not get a diaper rash when they cut teeth but both of my daughters DID get rashes every time and so did my granddaughters. I bought low-cost diaper ointment with zinc oxide and used it liberally and then the rash got better. Change diapers immediately (even when not teething) and keep her dry as much as possible.

Every baby varies on how long it will take for that particular tooth to break through the gums. Some babies get two or more at the same time. Some teeth take 3 or 4 months to come in and some take less or more.

Between five and seven months the fun begins! (or so they say)My first baby was "teething" forever. Sometimes it takes a long time for those pearly whites to pop through. She was 11 months old when she got her first tooth! By that time I had been saying she was teething for so long that I started to think maybe she wasn't ever going to get any. My daughter liked the mesh teeth-er thing. I would freeze strawberries, let one thaw part of the way and put it in there, I think I sliced it and put only a fourth in at a time.(depending on the size of the berry) She loved it. I remember when her teeth started to come in they came in four at a time!! Her poor little gums where so swollen before those mean teeth broke through. I thought they where infected and took her to the dentist. He said she was fine, it was just because she was getting so many at once. Once they broke through the skin the swelling went away. I felt so bad for her. However my second baby got her teeth one at a time and was seven months when she got the first one and it didn't seem quite as painful for her. There's just no way to tell.

i know that the biter bisciuts are bad, my son would not eat them and upon tasting them i don't blaim him. putting crushed ice in a wash cloth and letting them chew on that works well. also the frozen waffel sticks are good for the older ones. i also let my son chew on raw carrots (not the baby ones they are too small). you can also buy the inexpensive popcicles that come in the plastic tube either freeze them or get them really cold and let your little one chew on the outside of the unopened package. i hope that these suggestion help. i know some sound unconventional but they seem to work.

The mesh feeders are wonderful. I would use frozen fruit, or I would freeze baby juice in ice cubes. I found that strawberries work well, blueberries are very messy , melon, pears, and grapes work well also. With your baby only being 19 weeks though, those things might be to rough for her tummy so check with you peditrician first. Teeth come in at different times and vary from child to child. I have 3 children and they all teethed in different ways. Have plenty of baby tylenol or baby motrin. that helps with the pain just follow the directions and dont over medicate. Teething gel is a must to. Look for the baby oragel. Also a tip my mom gave me. Freeze a wet wash cloth. It really works. Then let her gum it and it will help relieve some pain and the corsness helps the teeth break through the gums. Good luck and I hope this helps a little.
Best wishes.

Could be a growth spurt and she's more hungry than usual. In my experience, my children started 'chewing' and never stopped! Could be teething, too....if you give meds make double sure that the dose is correct. I would hold off on the feeder for a while.
