My almost 5 month (Nov. 4th) old has been really irritable the last couple of days. She will wine and arch her back when she is being held or even if she is sitting or laying somewhere. She goes through periods of time where she is fine and happy. I do think she is teething because she is drooling bad, putting everything and her fists in her mouth ALL the time and has had a runny nose the last couple of days. She is running a low grade fever (98.5-99.0 taken with a forehead thermometer). Could the back arching be part of the teething or maybe something more?

So What Happened?

She hasn't been doing the back arching anymore. Someone mentioned that she may have been overtired and when I thought about it she really hadn't napped well over the weekend and that's when she was doing it. She is definitely teething!!! I have been giving her teething tablets at night which seem to help. Thanks for all of the advice, it's so nice to get other perspectives :)

Your baby is the poster baby of teething with those symptoms! But don't expect the tooth to pop out right away. Unfortunately teething starts a while before the tooth actually surfaces. Good luck and this too shall pass!

My son started drooling and stuff at 4 mos but didn't get his 1st tooth until he was 9 mos. The back arch thing is different. Both my kids did that when they were tired or over stimulated. So if she's not on a morning/afternoon nap schedule maybe it's time to get her on one. And if she is on that type of schedule maybe change it up. Pay attention to what times she is doing this. Is it about 9 am and again around 1. It could be that she is over tired and needs a nap.

Could be teething or a cold or a combo. My son gets irritable and has a tough time relaxing/sleeping for a day or two before he either comes down with a cold or sprouts another tooth!

Odds are pretty good, though that if it's teething you won't see a tooth for a while. Try Tylenol if she seems like she's really in pain!

Arching back sounds more like being gassy.

could be teething or maybe just a cold. My twins (they are 4) have had 100.5 temp for 2 days. They feel fine, but have a low grade temperature. So maybe something is going around. If the temperature persists for a few days, call the doctor and ask him/her for advice.

It does sound like teething. Teething pain comes and goes which is why she seems happy one moment and then is irritable later on. All babies are different and deal with the pain differently. My son was drooling through his bibs for at least a month before his first tooth popped through. He was also chewing on everything and cranky. I started putting an ice cube in a mesh feeder and letting him chew on it and it seemed to help. Teething stinks but luckily the first few teeth are the worst. Good luck!

Hi A., Yes your baby is teething. I don't believe the back arching is connected. Grandma Mary
