Teething 1 Yr. Old
I'm pretty sure my daughter is getting her first year molars, she is chewing her fingers and drooling a lot and has been waking up off and on in the middle of the night. Today she didn't eat much but every time she had something solid she pooped similar to diarrhea but not that runny (sorry so gross there, just wanted to be specific) immediately after she ate. And she has a very red butt and I'm pretty sure it's stinging when I change her diaper so I am using wet wash cloths, not wipes.
Are these symptoms of teething? or should I be calling the doctor? Just curious to hear other moms' experiences.
Thanks
So What Happened?™
Thanks everyone for your advice. I called the doctor who said it was a virus, so we did the brat diet and after about a week, all cleared up. We're using the teething tablets too as she seems to be teething too.
Thanks again!

When my son is cutting teeth, he does not sleep through the night and usually starts with a runny nose and cough similar to a cold.
I would call the doctor.

My nieces both got diarrhea when they were teething. My kids drooled a lot and had difficulty sleeping. So it sounds like it could be teething. The fact that she has the diarrhea immediately after she eats, however, would make me call the doctor to be on the safe side. He'll want to know how long this has been going on. In the meantime you will want to make sure she is getting plenty of liquids to guard against dehydration and maybe follow the brat diet (bananas, rice applesauce, toast) for the diarrhea. The wet wash cloths are a good idea. Diaper rash cream, too.

Hi B.! I've had very similar symptoms with my daughter when she cut her molars. She is now cutting her fourth and is going through the same thing you described. I have found once the teeth are fully through things go back to normal. I have also found that soaking my daughters raw butt in warm bath water for 15 mintues a day and then letting her bottom completely dry off, followed by a size up diaper (helps with absorbing pee) with lots of cream (A&D or Desitin) to help get rid of her rash has helped alot. Good luck!

It depends on who you ask, but our pediatrician and Dr. Sears both say yes, this is a symptom of teething.
According to Dr. Sears (in one of his newsletters), his theory is that during teething, children drool more, so more liquid ends up in their bellies, and therefore in their intestines and stool, causing soft bowel movements or diarrhea, which in turns results in diaper rash.
Try wipes with no alcohol or purfumes, like Pampers Sensitive Wipes. The texture of the washcloth may also be irritating.
What has been the magic bullet for us is corn starch. You can use the kind you would use in the kitchen or a powder. We prefer the Goldbond Cornstarch Baby Powder, because it is the only one that doesn't contain Aloe, which can also irritate sensitive skin.
For teething pain, I recommend Gentle Naturals Teething Drops. Made by the Orajel company, branded under the Disney name (Pooh and Eyeore are on the box). They are homeopathic, and I can usually find them at Target or CVS. I prefer them to Hylands, because Hylands contains Bella Donna, which can be dangerous in large doses, so I don't even want it in my house.
Good luck!

yes,it is totally normal to have diarrhea with teething. it is gross but, unfortunately, that is the truth of it. definantly wet wash clothes are better with the sore butt. use bordeaux butt paste, if it is really bad. it may take a few days but it will help clear it up. also if you are giving her dairy like whole milk and just started doing so it may also give her runny diaper. she may also run a low grade fever with teething so give her some baby tylenol especially before she goest o bed at night. hylands teething tablets are also great and help soothe the pain of teething and are all natural. you can buy them in pathmark, walmart, walgreens to name a few places. good luck.
it will get better.

my son is also a year and everytime he got teeth (he now has 12), he would droll like crazy, put his fingers in his mouth, bite the hell out of my shoulder or knee. he also got a touch of diarrhea and occasionally a nose run and would pull on his ear, but didn't cry about it. doc said it was just teething and so far so good. he also wakes up alot in the middle of the night, when he used to sleep thru the night months ago.
i feel your pain.
p.s. use diaper rash cream while this is going on, to ease that pain.

Chewing her fingers, drooling and waking up off and on during the night are possible symptoms of teething. However, I have never heard of the diarrhea and diaper rash being associated with teething. The diaper rash is most likely a result of the diarrhea. Are you using diaper rash cream with every diaper change? If you aren't, I suggest you do until the diarrhea stops and the rash is gone. You don't want your child to end up with blisters.
Think about what she is eating. If she is only eating things like fibrous fruits, you will need to stop them for now. Try bananas and cheese. Both of these are binding foods which should help to stop the diarrhea. However, if this isn't the case, then I would suggest you take her to the doctor about the diarrhea. Also, make sure that she isn't getting dehydrated by giving her lots of liquids.
