tDD Wants to Start Shaving - Best and Safest Method

I know that there have been several questions regarding our DDs beginning to shave, and I apologize now that I have not taken the time to look for all of those questions and previous replies.

My daughter is 10 (and a VERY mature 10 year old) and she asked me the other day if she can start shaving her legs. Her leg hair is very light in color, however, her legs are very tan and her hair is very thick. Therefore, I have absolutely no issues with her wanting to shave.

My question is this, I have always only used a razor to shave my legs so I am really unknowledgeable about the other options out there. I know about Nair but I really kind of want to stay away from that as we tend to mainly take baths and it just doesn't seem like you would want Nair in your bath water.

I know that there are electric razors - for those that use these, what are your thoughts on how the work, whether or not they are painful, safety, etc.

If a razor is the way to go then is there a better brand or type than another - I am currently usign the cheap disposal razors for my personal use. :-)

I just really don't want her cutting herself up. I still have a couple of really big scars on my legs from cutting myself with a razor and even if you are being careful it is still somewhat easy to cut yourself.

Thank you all!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much. You ladies are fabulous. We did go with the venus razor (DD loved the colors it came it) and the shaving cream. Her legs were so hairy and the hair was so thick that she ended up having to shave about 3 times. Lol!! Anyway no cuts and no knicks. Can't believe my daughter is old enough to be shaving.

Thank you all for your great advice. :-)

My DD has been shaving for about a year (she's almost 12) and she uses the Venus razor. She hasn't cut herself yet. I use the same razor and love it. Just let her know to be very easy on her ankles and knees, lol.

I recently got the Venus Breeze Spa it seems like you could NOT cut yourself with that. And tell her not to do what my daughter did the first time, she kept cleaning the hair off the blade with her thumb and sliced up her thumb.

Just have her use what you use, and show her your technique.
I don't use the disposables, such poor quality, I call them skin shredders :( My daughters and I all use the Venus razors, and we are good at replacing the blades often (dull blades also lead to more cuts.)
Good tools used properly always lead to better results!

STAY AWAY from Nair! My dad didn't want me to shave yet, so he let me use Nair instead... I used it without any problems for a couple of months, and then one day when I went to rinse it off, it peeled a strip of skin from my ankle to my knee off... VERY painful, and I still have the scar!

He let me shave after that. lol.

I would just get her any woman's razor (I like Venus myself...) with a swivel head, a can of shave gel, and let her go to town. The swiveling heads make it a lot harder to cut yourself. The shave gel will be useful for her to see where she has already shaved, until she gets used to it. :)

Just show her. My daughter and I use the cheapo disposables.

I cut myself pretty bad once and learned better technique. Daughter has had a bad cut once as well.

Your daughter will get a cut here and there in the beginning but she'll get the hang of it. Get some good shaving cream and just sit down and show her.

We do showers so I am ok with shaving cream but I would not shave in the tub, ugh

I highly recommend the Schick Intuition. Its like a huge hunk of soap with the razor in the middle. No messy foams or creams needed. Just get this thing and your leg wet and start shaving. Easy as can be. My (now almost 18 year old) daughter and I have been using them for years.

We buy the big packs now at Sams club, and we reuse them until the soap hunk thingy is too low. Disposable.

Good luck!

You may want to put her in a swim suit and shave her legs for her for the first time, then get her an electric for everyday upkeep. I've found that electrics work best used daily and when the hair is short, too long and they tend to pull at the hair not cut it. Make it part of her routine at bedtime. Bath time, dry off, a quick buzz over the legs, brush her teeth and off to bed.

I actually use a Gillette Fusion razor (not the power ones). It works really well & I don't cut myself.

My daughter uses a Venus razor, too. She's 15 now, been shaving since about 11. I did help her/show her/give her tips first couple times. But since then she's been on her own. No problems.

I have a cheap electric that I would be perfectly comfortable letting my DD use (she's 9 and has the hairiest legs I've ever seen).

It's a personal decision. I have my 12yr old here who started with a depilatory last year & still is using it in 1-2 wk. intervals. You DO have to use the shower & not the bath but I feel it is a better deal for her. The razors now are WAAAAAY more safe than those we started with, the Venus is WONDERFUL it is the one I have used since it first came out. Years ago I tried an electric razor given to me as a gift & didn't like it but, I had already been shaving for a few years prior, that may have been the problem. Electric razors like hand razors I am sure have been upgraded, so I am thinking one may work for her.

I realize that I didn't really answer the question directly but I am hoping this has given you some thoughtful insight.
