Hi Moms,

I've just spent the past 3 hours trying to take my wedding rings off. I'm entering my 38th week of pregnancy and am swollen. This didn't happen with my two previous pregnancies, so I never thought of taking my rings off. I wasn't having any discomfort with the rings until this evening. I've tried the Windex trick, lotion, hand soap, ice, Saran Wrap, cool water, hubby tried taking them off, nothing has worked so far. My next step, I'm thinking, is having to have them cut off. Please help if you can.

Thank ladies,

M.

So What Happened?

Thank you Ladies!

I got both rings off this afternoon after playing with them for about an hour. I used cool water, veggie oil and Windex. It took alot of patience and constant playing with them to get them off. It was painful, but mission accomplished:) Thank you for helping me out....it is greatly appreciated.

AFater you've cut out the salt for a couple days, put a glove in the freezer, let it get nice and cold, put it on for about 5 minutes and try again with something slick like oil or butter. Hope it helps!

The only advice I have is soak your finger in very cold ice water in hopes of shrinking it a bit. Otherwise, you may have to have it cut off. (I would use a doctor to do it, however.) I did with my first child. My finger literally swelled overnight. It took me many years to get the ring re-soddered together. Good Luck.

Keep your hand elevated and as cool as possible this should take some of the swelling down and the more you try to get it off the more your finger will swell. Just keep it elevated and put ice on it for a while just try to forget about it (I know that's hard to do)and try later. Sorry I can't help more.

Hi M.,
My Aunt is a jeweler and she has seen this countless times. Don't freak out - if none of the suggestions work then just go see a good jeweler. They have some tricks and tips to get them off - they can wrap string around it and slide it off etc it's actually pretty neat (not sure how it's done but it works like a magic trick).

Good luck and congratulations!

When I pregnant, I continued teaching my water aerobics class and simply being in the water relieved all swelling I had for the day. I suggest finding a local pool that is open where you can float and walk around. Not only will you be able to get your rings off, but you will also feel less bloated. I lived in the pool with both of my pregnancies and felt sooooo much better after getting in the water.

Have you tried elevating your hands above your heart? Just like you would your feet if they were swelling. I would try doing that during the day. I say daytime because in the mornings your hands are naturally swollen or bigger than usual, just like you weigh more in the morning than at night. I would give that a shot, coupled with butter when removing the rings.
Hope this helps!

Try 1st thing in the morning. My swelling was much less in the morning and got worse throughout the day. Good luck.

I agree with Rebecca. Get a good nights sleep and cut back on salt for a few days and see what happens.

I think the only thing left (aside from cutting them off) is trying to relax and leave your fingers alone for a few days, even if the rings are bothering you. The more you focus on getting them off, the harder it's going to be. I'm no longer pregnant but it was the only thing that worked for me and continues to be the only thing that works for me. Hope that helps..

Yeah, do what Lisa C. said...the string thing is amazing! Just the entertainment of it will be worth the trip! LOL

If it's any comfort, I couldn't wear my rings either during pregnancy. I bought a fake on that would fit. I didn't like the idea of people seeing me pregnant without a wedding ring...dumb, I know! :)

Just wondering how your blood pressure is doing? I know that some swelling in pregnancy is normal, but usually it comes on gradually, the sudden edema in the extremedies CAN be an idication of pre-eclampsia.

I think that everyone's suggestions on removal are good ones, good luck with your healthy pregnancy!

The more you try to get the ring off the harder it will be. Try to soak your hand in ice water, that will shrink the vessels and it should help. Also drink lots of water, drinking water helps to reduce water retention. If not, get it cut off. It is not worth stressing over. Get the ring fixed is very inexpensive, I had a friend do the same thing. Good luck!

Use veggie oil. Take it off when your hand is less swallon sometime during the day. Usually thee the most swallon i the morning and after dinner. You want to really get it full of oil.relax the finger too. If you can't get them off just treat the skin under the rings that might help with like neopsporine or hand lotion. Good Luck you really only have two more weeks and I wouldn't cut them off. You shouldn't swell that much more. About one week after delivery your swelling should subside. Now if your finger is purple you may have to cut them off. But i don't see that but not saying it ain't gonna happen.
