Makes me think of the TMBG song "John Lee Supertaster" - oh no! Now the melody is going around in my head! My son loves that song.

Holy cow!! I have a geographical tongue and have NEVER heard anyone else use that term!!! Geographical tongue is this: You know when you bite your tongue and you get that red mark where you bit it? I always have that but it moves around. I could look at my tongue and the mark will be on the tip of my tongue, an hour later it can be gone and moved to the side of my tongue. It doesn't hurt, I don't feel it move, it's just a weird thing. That is so funny that someone else in my lifetime has used that term. I've never met anyone else with my strange condition!

Supertasters are folks whose tongues have either more or more active/easily stimulated taste buds. They literally "super" taste everything. They taste nuances and flavors far more intensely than a "normal" taster. There are also those who are nontasters, who have to have extreme flavors to be able to really taste anything. I would imagine someone who loves really hot/spicy foods would be likely to fall into a nontaster category. But being a supertaster wouldn't be fun either--- every bitter nuance of chocolate or coffee? eww...

Talk about sensory overload!

Not sure about geographic tongue, though... wait... let me utilize google:

Geographic tongue is just a patchy looking tongue. Apparently it doesn't DO anything, it just looks like spots/patches (like a map---hence geographic?) all over, and the patches can move around and change from day to day. No special abilities or lack thereof, however.

They have to do with taste and condition of the tongue.

On an opposite note: I have read that it has been determined that people with type 2 diabetes have fewer taste buds than other people! That could explain wanting sweeter, saltier, spicier foods!

My granddaughter has geographic tongue. It's really hard because she will love certain foods for a very long time then one day she will take a big bite and puke for half an hour. Her taste buds have switched around.

Here are some pictures of geographic tongue.

I have a friend who is super sensitive when it comes to food. He can tell what ingredients are in just about any recipe. He can taste any food from a restaurant and go home and make the same dish. Maybe the Supertaster is what he has....

Here are some pictures of it.

Yup. I have a geographic tongue. It's basically red blotches on the tongue. I don't always have it, though. It comes and goes (and moves).

Supertasters have more/more sensitive taste buds. They definitely taste things like bitter and sour flavors more. These folks often don't like things that are bitter/sour. Most folks have this their whole lives, but I guess they learn to live with it a bit. Since we all lose a bit of our taste when we age, maybe by the time a supertaster is older they have a "normal" level of taste. hm?

Our daughter has a Geographic tongue. The patches really do more around every day.. very odd.

Imaging this. Children that are super picky eaters... many times they are super tasters at this age. even cooked onions or black pepper can taste too spicy for them. Eventually this will change as they age..

Remember when you were young and certain foods tasted terrible, but now that you are older, they taste good? Our taste buds change.

This is one of the reasons, we did not force our daughter to eat foods. Now that she is older, she is an adventurous taster.

My mom and brother have geographic tongues. They have grooves all over their tongues that look like rivers on a map. When I was little, it grossed me out, so my brother loved to stick his tongue out at me. :)
