Suggestions for Donating a Ton of Preemie, Newborn and Infant Clothes for Girls?

I was fortunate enough to have a bunch of friends and family get together to buy my daughter clothes and diapers after she was delivered 10 weeks early. Now she's seven months old and normal sized (17-18 lbs and 26+ inches) and I have all these tiny adorable clothes and unopened diapers taking up space in the nursery. Any suggestions on a local place (Dublin/San Ramon/Pleasanton) to donate these?

What can I do next?

Congratulations on your precious little one. What a blessing!

If you don't want to box them up for re-use at a later date, even for her dollies when she's older, then two great places come to mind for me:

Shepherd's Gate in Livermore
Valley Pregnancy Center in Dublin (Not sure if they take donations like this, but you can call and ask.)

HI T.

There is a mothers of twins club in your area and I think they have a premie lending library so parents don't have to purchase premie clothes if they are surprised by the babies coming early.

Another great place is your local freecycle yahoo group, just search in yahoo groups for freecycle and your geographical area, the nice thing about that is that the clothes go directly to someone who can use them.

Shepard's Gate Women's shelter in Livermore. I am sure they'd appreciate it. Whatever they don't use they'll sell at their thrift store.

I highly reccommend the Bay Area Crisis Nursery which helps families in crisis, taking in children for a time, and can always use clothing and excess baby care items.

John Muir ICN takes stuff I believe. My twins (now alsost four) were delivered 10 weeks early as well. I gave all their premie stuff that was used and new to the ICN and they took it back then. Good luck.

Congrats on your little one! My suggestion- box up the clothes and hang on to them for dollie dress up (as suggested previously) and if you are having more kids, you never know.

My first was 4 weeks early- total surprise. Had to run out and buy preemie everything. He outgrew them quickly... and then I donated everything to the hospital where he was born in case another mom might need them. I did everything different for my second and guess what? Five weeks early though he was good size (just under 6 lb.) and we had to hit the stores again for preemie clothes. We were blessed both kids came home with us from the hospital no complications.

Anyway, put them in a box and save them "just in case".

Have fun with your daughter. :)

In addition to Twins by the Bay - you might see if the hospital you delivered at could use any of them. We too had preemies - twins born 12 weeks early - and we were able to donate a bunch of preemie stuff to the NICU at Alta Bates. They use them for families of preemies that are in need.

The other thing that comes to mind is to check out the March of Dimes - they have a preemie campaign and may know of places that could really use preemie supplies.

Glad to hear all is well!

Twins by the Bay www.twinsbythebay.org is a nonprofit support group for families with twins or triplets that maintains a collection of "loaner" preemie clothes that members can borrow for free (since multiples are often born early, this has proved to be a valuable service for many families), email ____@____.com if you're interested in donating your preemie clothes there. The club primarily serves families in the Oakland/Berkeley/Alameda area.
Twin Valley Mothers of Twins Club (www.tvmotc.org) serves families in your area but I don't know if they maintain a loaner preemie clothing collection

Hi T.,

I also have a daughter who came early (6 1/2 weeks). I still have her preemie, newborn clothes because we're going to try for another one soon and I don't want to give anything away - "just in case". When I do decide to give her clothes away, I was thinking of giving it to a friend who might have been "surprised" by an early arrival, or to the hospital where my daughter was born. I remember they would have clothes that they would put on the new teeny, tiny sweeties who had to stay for a while, in case the new parents didn't have anything to put on their babies. You might want to give that a try. I'm also sure Salvation Army or thrift stores would also take them off your hands. Maybe even consignment shops. Anyway, I hope this helps!

Save a bunch of your premie / infant favorites and "easy to put on" for your daughter's first baby doll. They're the perfect size!

A friend gave me that advice too late and I ended up buying premie clothing for her to use at the thrift stores.

Another tip, keep/buy little girls premie/newborn diapers (with velcro fasteners) to play with rather than the official dolly diapers, they're much cheaper.
