I am trying to make some christmas cookies, and realized that I do not have all the ingredients. With the weather what it is, we do not want to go to the store. My recipe calls for orange zest and orange juice. I don't have either of those things, but we do have clementines. Has anyone used their zest and juice in place of orange? Do you think that will work? Thanks for your input.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice. I made the cookies with the clementine juice and zest and they turned out great.

I would use the clementines. If you had lemons or limes on hand, I would exchange those, too.
Are they the Orange Drop cookies from the Betty Crocker Cooky Book? My favorite!

I used clementine zest in gingerbread last week, and it worked out just fine!

For the zest, ABSOLUTELY! However, the juice will be a little more tart, I would recommend just adding a little extra sugar (really just a little more) and you should have the same flavor - if not an even better more exciting taste!

I think clementines would be a great substitute. And since they tend to be a bit sweeter prolly make the cookies taste awesome.

Hey, I made those last night! Even though I had to send my husband to the store for an orange, the recipe only asks for a tablespoon of juice so there wasn't too much flavor of orange anyway. I think anything will work just fine.

I'm sure you've already made the cookies already, but yes--clementines will do in a pinch. The rind is much thinner, and be sure not to get too much of the bitter pith (the white stuff) in there, but it should be fine. Same with the juice.

I haven't used clementines in cookies but I bet they'll be great. :-) You can usually switch up the citrus juice/zest you use for different flavors. I've done it many times with no issues, just a new great taste. You'll have to post how you like the finished cookies. Maybe you'll have a new recipe! ;-)

Hi E.,

I recently tried mandarin orange zest and juice in pancakes and they turned out fine just not as intense of a flavor. Because the skin is so thin on the mandarin's and clementine's be sure to use a microplane or fine zester so that you don't end up with the bitter white pith. If you would like more recipes or help email me. I am an independent Pampered Chef consultant in the Seattle/Tacoma area and would be happy to help. Have a blessed Christmas!

Yes your suggestion will work in the place of the orange and if you have any lemon extract to put with it to add a little more flavor. Maybe 1/4 tsp.
Hope this works for you and have a wonderful Christmas.

They will work just fine as subs for oranges, the zest might be harder to get as the skins are thinner on the clementines.
