My 5 year old is suffering from something... She's been having tummy trouble for 5 days now. Saturday night she woke up and threw up in her bed, just once, and then was fine. We thought it might be a fluke, she had eaten a brownine right before bed. She was fine all day Sunday and Monday, and then Tuesday and Wednesday she had a few bouts of loose stool. It was not complete diareah, but certainly not formed. She complained of belly pain on and off, but would eat and toletate food for quite a while. These episodes did not directly follow eating, she would eat and be fine for hours. Well, Wednesday night she woke up complaining she was itchy and was covered from the waist down in a bright red rash with welts. After I found the rash she said she had to go potty and was sitting on it when she started to complain that her throat hurt. I grabbed a bucket and she threw up and had a bout of diareah together and then was fine the rest of the night. Today she is perfect, playing as usual and saying she feels fine. I'm keeping her on a conservitive diet and have eliminated dairy until she has a normal BM. I called the pediatrician, but they had no words of wisdom for me. I have 2 other kids, and my husband and myself and I am waiting to see if someone else comes down sick. I've never experienced such a strange combination of symptoms for such an extended period of time. Has this happened to anyone else? Was it a virus or something else?

What can I do next?

My neice had similar symptoms, plus a fever. She ended up having strep and the MD said she may have had H1N1 too, but they only tested her for the strep.

Hi, D.:
Your daughter may have two things going on at the same time:
Allergic reaction
and Gastritis.

Is there some reason an appointment was not made with the ped?
Just want to know. D.

I think it was a virus. my son started off with being congested one week then the next week he had diarreah. in the midst of all of that he was throwing up everynight for a week. I went to the doctors office and she stated that sometimes little kids take some time to get over the stomach virus or any kind of virus.I would tell you that there is not too much that you can do when they have a virus. It just has to run its course. It sounds like you are on the right track. i know it is nerve racking and tiring when they are sick. good luck

HI, I've written one responce already but not sure if it got posted. Iam an ER dr. what you are describing sounds like HSP -
HENOCH- SCHOLNLEIN PURPURA. you need to get your daughter to the doctor, and tell them about the RASH together with other stomach symptoms. Although most kids recover by themselves you still need to get her to the dr bc of possible kidney damage.
hope this helps and good luck.
if my other message came through sorry for the double!

You may want to eliminate gluten from her diet as well.. this sounds similar to what my daughter went through before being diagnosed with a gluten intolerance.

I already responded, but for some reason it didn't show up?? If this is a re-post, I'm sorry!

I would take her in and have her tested for strep. It is possible that the strep is causing the problems with her stomach. Someone I know mentioned that her daughter had been dealing with these same issues for weeks, and I suggested she go get a strep test. The test was positive. I know this because my oldest (who is now 22) has always had stomach upset and a headache as the major symptoms of strep.

Good luck, and I hope she's feeling better soon!!

Hi, I'm not a doctor but I do have a child with food allergies. Have you considered that perhaps she ate something that caused her to have an allergic reaction? Is there anything you can think of that can be linked to each episode. For instance, did she have milk or anything with milk in it before each episode? Did she have a reaction within 2 hours or so, of having consumed the food with the possible allergen? It could be that her body is just not tolerating a specific food. If your doctor is not being very helpful, perhaps you can find a new doctor to get a second opinion. A good source is also WebMD.com as they have a symptom checker and perhaps you can at least talk to your doctor with a little more information and focus. If you suspect a food allergy it's always easy enough to confirm if you visit an allergist who can perform a very easy and painless skin test. Talk to your doctor again about your concerns and if you feel that they are not being helpful get a second opinion or ask for a referral to a specialist such as an allergist. Good luck, it stinks having your child be sick and not know why
