Stinky Cat

We have a cat-kitten really. She is about 5 months old. She is beautiful, a gorgeous gray with some white and wite paws, green eyes. She is supposedly persian though I think more part persian. Anyway, the girl stinks! When she uses the litter pan for #2, it smells like a cross between some really nasty stinky feet and nasty bad breathe. Her pee doesn't have too much of a smell but she likes to go in the bathroom, especially if the kids know clothes or towels on the floor. I don't have anywhere else to put our clothes hamper so it is in the bathroom. We close the door but my 3 yr old sometimes forgets. Oxyclean to the rescue. Anyway, does any one else out there have a persian and get the same issue? I have almost always had cat and never had this happen. Also, what can I use to discourage her peeing in the bathroom? We usually don't know it until later when we find out something is wet.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Changing the litter helped. I checked the food and chicken is the first ingredient so good there. I did try a different brand also with no change in results and HE hated it. That's right. HE. I finally took a look. It is a BOY. My kids were floored because the woman that gave HIM to them told them it was a girl. I should have checked when I got home from teh hospital. We need to get him fixed sooner than later. I do not want him marking his territory even more. I had a male cat and while I loved him very much, the spraying was....ugh. By the time I could pay for him to be fixed, he was too old.

Sorry. I could not pass up this opportunity to channel Pheobe from Friends!
Where is her litter pan? Can you move it to a place that is away from the rest of the house? Can you put the hamper in a closet or get one that has a lid? The website secretsofcats.com looks super helpful.
Good luck!

Kitties usually only pee outside the box for a few reasons:

1. The box isn't kept clean or they don't like the litter.

2. There are too many cats using the box.

3. They have an infection and associate the box with pain when they pee...so they avoid it.

As far as the stinky poops...this is directly related to what you're feeding her. If she's eating fish-based foods, switch her over to chicken/poultry based. Or vice-a-versa. And ensure that you aren't just buying the cheapo, low quality food. Look at the first ingredient...if it's a grain, you're buying the wrong food. The first ingredient should be a meat.

For the stinky poop, try changing her food. For the wetting in the bathroom, you might consider the possibility of a urinary tract infection. You could also put a small litter box in the bathroom to see if she'd use that instead.

First things first, she needs to be checked for a UTI. I have two kittens (7 months old) and one has already had two UTIs. That often makes them pee outside the box.

Also, I've been told that bathroom rugs (with rubber backing) actually smell like cat pee to cats, which is why they pee on them often. You might need to hang them on the tub after you use them.

But do go get her checked for a UTI. (I also have one stinky kitten.. she actually farts a lot. Maybe you have one like that too!)

i cant help you with the whole peeing on the bathroom floor thing but with the litter box situation .. we ended up getting a litter box that had the cover that went over it and theres a little opening for the cat to get in there.. that contains a good amount of the smell but we also used one of those odor eater things ..not an airfreshener, nothing scented it just absorbed the odor.. and stuck it on the back of the box .. that took car of it for the most part

Get her checked for a UTI. I had a female cat that peed on clothes on the floor and she had a UTI. Medication fixed that problem.

As far as the stinky poop, feed her only premium cat food, none of those grocery store brands like 'meow mix' or cat chow. We use Purina Pro Plan. Another good kind is Nutro, they sell it at Petsmart.
