Hello everyone! Hope your day is going well!
I have been trying to eat healthy and lose weight. Doing good on weight lost about 15 pounds since Jan 3 has slowed down since, only because I use to eat really bad and lost a bunch so must be working on the fat now. Steamed rice I would really like to try. I found stuff on long white rice but every says brown is diffrent. I can't find how to do that anywhere. Also if their is any recipe I can use I would really appriciate it! Thank you everyone who can help! Have a wonderful day.

I prefer the long-grain brown rice (Carolina brand) - I found a recipe for baking it, and it comes out great every time, nice and fluffy instead of clumpy and sticky. Just follow the proportions on the bag (rinse the rice well, and drain before using). Heat a small amount of oil in an oven proof saucepan, and add the rice to toast it slightly before adding the liquid. I usually use vegetable broth and pre-heat it before adding to the rice. Cover and bake (usually takes around 50 mins. in a 375 oven). Remove from oven, and place a clean dishcloth under the lid of the pot - let stand for 10 mins. then uncover and fluff with a fork. I am not a huge fan of brown rice in general, but am trying to cut out all the white rice, and this is a pretty decent substitute, especially when I add veggies to it. It definitely is better for you, and I find it to be more filling. Good luck with the weight loss!

Brown is better for you..its the whole grain where your body views white rice as any other sugar. You can use brown rice in any recipe you would normally use white. I think it has a heartier flavor. Just follow the directions on the bag. Brown rice just takes longer to cook. I have a rice steamer and LOVE IT. At first I thought buying one would be ridiculous but I have an electric stove (i would prefer gas) and it never maintains a good temp for cooking rice..it seems too cool or too hot. The rice cooker reduces the cooking time as well. Keep up the good work.

Just buy a bag or box of brown rice and follow the directions on the bag. It's pretty much the same as steaming white rice -unless you have a rice cooker. The measurements for cooking brown rice in a rice cooker are a little different for different types of rice. You can substitute brown rice in any recipe calling for white rice. Enjoy!

Brown rice-- I make it on the stovetop. (Grew up with a rice cooker, but they often have aluminum inserts. Not good.)

My ratio is 1 cup brown rice to 2 and 1/4 cup water.
Put rice in the pot, rinse and sort (any chaff or stones, discard). Drain rinse water, then add measured amount of water.
Heat on med-high or high until boiling, then reduce heat to a low simmer. I do this b/c I don't like eating burnt rice and there's more chance for that with a hot burner. Check it every so often; do not stir! I use a rice paddle and just twist it to look for liquid. Once the liquid is relatively gone, take off heat. I like to let mine set a bit before serving. Done!

Follow the directions on the package to cook the steamed brown rice. I you would like the rice to be more flavorable, you can substitute half of the water that the directions call for, for vegetable or chicken broth. Or you can cook it up plain and splash some Bragg's liquid aminos on it afterward (tastes like soy sauce but healthier). It may take some getting used to the texture of brown rice if you have been eating white rice all along (it's a bit more chewier), but it really is so good for you. Eating white rice is like eating sugar; your bloods sugar levels can spike up quite fast after eating it and you don't get the benefit of the fiber that brown rice provides.

I have a vegetable steamer that has a rice cooker container for it. It's great. I put in the rice, add the liquid, what works best for me is a 1 to 1 ratio so I have FIRM rice. I also like to add oregano, thyme and sage and a vegetarian boullion.
Another thing I do is buy inexpensive short grain brown rice and mix it with the expensive long grain rice so that I have a yummy texture throughout my rice.
Good luck. The brown rice is SO much better for you than the white.
Also, you might want to try quinoah, it's an ancient grain that cooks like rice, but has tons of protien and fiber--very good and good for you.

Brown rice is more healthful than white rice, for it still contains it's out bran layer. Yet know that you cook it the same, but brown rice will take a little bit longer to steam. Also the higher in altitude, the longer all rice takes to cook/steam. And Brown rice can easily be found in grocery stores. For more details on the health differences see the cookbook:

there are boxes of "quick brown rice" that are easier to do than slow cooking it...
Then try adding olive oil or shredded mozzerella cheese to add some moisture/flavor.
QUINOA is AWESOME and we like putting lil pieces of avocado, tomato and/or cheese in it... (We buy it at WINCO in bulk.. as with other cool stuff)

a serving is 1/4 of a cup (unless you use instant which is gross in my opinion) 1/4 cup rice and 1 cup water (i like to add a chicken bullion cube to mine) cover and bring to a boil on the stove top then reduce heat to low and cook intill water is gone (30-45min depending on how many servings you fix) 160 cal per serving

We use brown rice all the time - it has so much more flavor! (It's not really very brown, but definitely not the bleached white of white rice).

I use a rice cooker. For brown rice it's 2.5 times the water - so if you cook 1 c of rice, it's 2 1/2 cups of water. The rice cooker "pop"s when it's done, basically when all the water is cooked in, so you could do the same thing on the stove and watch it (try not to take the lid off too often though).
1/2 cup cooked rice is a serving. It's still carbohydrates, but much better for you than refined rice or pasta. It's great topped with a gravy. We also love red beans and rice (1 c dry red bead, soaked and cooked, 7 c chicken broth, onion, celery, green pepper, garlic, bay leaves, simmered for about an hour.)

I'm a fan of Uncle Ben's 90 second rice in the microwave. A "bag" of rice is at times one of my meals! lol Or, there is enough to split it into 3 side servings. I know it is more expensive ($1.75-2.25/bg), but it's worth it to me because I eat it more often than if I'd cook it the more traditional way (I do NOT enjoy cooking... so I go for simple, healthy, practical, non processed, etc).... I was actually surprised at how good the rice could be cooked in 90 seconds! lol It's the perfect thing in a pinch and to try so you can see how well you will like it, etc.
