Standing Closets and Toddlers' Rooms

We were always short of closet space in my kids rooms when they were little, too. What I did was get some strong hooks to put in the ceiling, run a heavy cord or chain thru a 2 or 3 foot piece of pipe and hang it on the hooks. It worked great and only costs a few dollars!

I even did this in the garage to hang winter coats during the summer and all my husband's hunting clothes on to make more room in the closets in the house.

Another place to put these make shift closet rods is in the closet. Hang one from the already existing closet rod to make a second rod to hang little children's clothes.

Do you have an Ikea near you?? They have great stand alone wardrobes. We have a couple ikea pieces (dresser, tv stand) and for the price they've held up extremely well...and look stylish.

We bought cheap 'kitchen pantries' from Christmas Tree Shop and bolted it to the wall (important!). You'd have to put a rod or two in yourself bc it's meant for kitchen items, but it is long enoughto accommodate her things. It cost about $70. We got two and have them side by side.

We did what Glo did... it was nice because you can adjust the chain to shorten it as the kids grow.

It's hit or miss but you just never know what you may find in a Thrift-Store.

Go on craigslist and check them out.. There are a ton of Armoirs and other things that can work.. Remember even if the armoir only has shelves, you can take some of them out and add a rod for hanging items. It is is sturdy it will last longer and you can always resale it. If is is light weight, consider anchoring it to the wall.

We had the same problem in our previous house. I just purchased a couple of shelves with pegs below them (one from Pottery Barn kids and one from Target) and hung the clothes on those. The one with the prettiest stuff was front and center in the room (with cute things displayed on the shelf), the other one was behind the door so you didn't see it as much (with her shoes on the shelf). Adding a stand-up closet wasn't an option because the room was so small there wasn't any place to put it.

I like Armoire but they can be way too pricey. I did this in my daughters room when we lived in a crappy apartment for work purpose, it didnt have a closet at all. I hung a nice Wooden Rod from two very decorative plant hanger in the ceiling, strung LED lights around the strings and above the rod. Then I hung the clothes there very neatly. Yes it is in full view, but its a kids room, it was always clean and neat, and actually made a super cute night light for her room. My friends always commented they loved it cause it "Showcased" her many darn tootin cute dresses.

just be sure whatever you buy, you bolt to the wall. I had a terrible accident with my son at 3 yrs old with a dresses falling. So I am talking from experience. My son is fine that GOD. :)

what about just building something yourself. Then you can go solid wood and still spend less. This webpage, knockoffwood.com has some great plans with nothing but simple tools and materials.
