Hi,

I just ordered a stainless steel cookware set for myself. Its still on its way - but I just wanted to know what your experience with stainless steel cookware has been. Any recommendations on how to use it, clean it, some dos and dont's? Also, do you use your stainless steel pans for things like pancakes and other stuff like that? How do you avoid food sticking to the pans?

Any input will be appreciated.

I love my stainless steel cookware! Hope you will too! My brother bought a set too! But he had issues with the egg's sticking to the pan. I don't have that issue, I use real butter with egg's. When I told him that he liked the cookware much better! He is a big fan of over easy egg's and it was a deal breaker for him. Pancakes I have used canola oil and/or butter. As for cleaning, I use copper clean to clean tough things like grease marks and what not. I have had my set for 14 yrs now and still love it! AND it still looks great! I do have a few of my mom's cast iron pieces and the stainless doesn't do fried chicken like the cast iron does, but other than that I do all of my everyday cooking in the stainless.

Hi;

In response to your stainless steel cookware that is a great choice. To keep your food from sticking use a little olive oil while cooking and that will take care of that problem. You will start to notice that the inside bottom of your pans will sometimes take on a rainbow hue. Do not be alarmed it will happen because when you boil water(like for pasta)the heat mixed with the water will make the rainbow appear. I have never put my SS in the diswasher I just continue to hand wash them. I have never had a problem with rusting so rest assured about that as well!! Enjoy!!

Three golden rules for using GOOD stainless steel cookware:

1. Before adding the food, put the pan on the stove to warm it before you add the oil, food, etc.

2. There is no need really to jack up the temperature much higher than medium. Ever.

3. Use Bar Keeper's Friend to wash your pots and pans. Even if they say they're dishwasher safe, wash them by hand.

If you allow the pan to heat properly before adding oil/butter or food and then don't put the heat higher than medium, you should NEVER have a problem with food sticking. Most people have sticking issues when the heat is too darn high and they try to 'flip' the food too soon, almost burning the outer layer of the food but keeping the inner layers of the food uncooked - that makes for one messy pancake! When you're cooking something that needs flipping or turning, put the item in the pan and leave it alone until it is time to flip. Unfortunately most people watch the cooking shows where the food is being jiggled, flipped, poked, prodded, slid all around the pan from the moment it is introduced...just let it sit there and cook and when it is time to flip, then flip. It'll help immensely. (*The only exception is stir frying. Stir frying should be done on high heat with everything chopped, laid out and ready before beginning the 'roller coaster' process that stir frying is. Once you start stir frying, you really can't stop the food from moving...stir frying is about the only time you really want to move the food...because you are using high heat)

I have stainless steel cookware and I haven't had any problems cleaning the pots. If there's stuff stuck on them you can use a scrubby pad to get it off or soak them. To cook in I just make sure I use a bit of canola or olive oil or butter in the pan so things don't stick. Cooking on high heat also makes things stick.

I haven't had any luck with cooking things like pancakes on stainless steel. I bought a teflon-coated pan for that. All my pots are stainless except for my pancake pan.

We use our Stainless for almost every thing. The only exception is eggs and pancakes. We have a pancake griddle that we use for pancakes and we have a cast iron pan that we use for eggs. Everything else we cook in stainless steel.
We have made eggs and pancakes in our stainless at times, just use some oil to keep it from sticking. We have never had any trouble cleaning the stainless, if something is stuck we soak it in hot water for a bit, and it comes off fine.

I have stainless steel pots that had belonged to my grandmother before she gave them to me 15 years ago. I have not had any problem cleaning them. Or rather, as long as my husband doesn't burn milk in them. WHen they do get hard to clean, I use a scrubbing pad or SOS. I have not had scratches or anything. I have a newer pan from Target that I use for eggs and pancakes. I put in a little oil just to coat the bottom and cook on low heat. I think that is the key. There is also a special powder for cleaning ss but i cannot remember the name. I know Jewel sells it. It is similar to Comet and comes in a white canister.

Get some Bar Keepers Friend. Cleans up the pans really nicely when they start to mark up.

I'd also get yourself a good non-stick omelet pan, for lower heat things that like to stick.

And no, I do not make pancakes on my stainless. Stainless is good for high heat --searing meat, etc. Anything that can't be cooked on high heat tends to stick.

The only thing I have learned (from watching the Food Network channel), is that you are never suppose to allow the flame to reach the sides of the stainless steal pots and pans.

Other than that, never use citrus types of dish soap (meaning, lemon/orange scented fragrances, as they slowly corrode anything stainless steel (including everyday silverware).
