Space Heater in Baby's Room?

Hi Mamas,

It's getting cold here in GR and I can't afford to turn the heat on just yet. As a matter of fact, I'm trying not to turn it on until November. We're fine dressed in layers during the day, but at night I wonder if my little one is warm enough. I am dressing him in layers: a onesie, cotton 2-piece pajamas and a fleece sleeper.

What do you think of using a space heater in his room? Is it safe? Do any of you have space heaters in the baby's room? If so, what kind of space heater do you use? Where do you put it? How do you dress your baby at night?

Thanks, Mamas, I appreciate your opinions.

C.

So What Happened?

Hi all! Thanks for the advice. We are using a space heater in his room, and one in my room, too! I keep it up on his dresser, it's cool to the touch, and has an auto shut of feature if it gets too hot. (Ceramic heater by Honeywell) So far it's worked out great. At this rate, I may not turn the heat on until December! :)

Hi there, I have a space heater in my babys room. I was worried about it at first but it seems to be working just fine. We usually dress her in footie pajamas and if its really cold, a fleece sleeper also. We have a space heater that has oil in it so it heats up slow and doesnt have a motor. I feel better if we keep it on low or medium. Also we have a baby monitor and a smoke detector in her room so I feel like I would know if something were happening. I dont think theres anything wrong with a space heater, I would just not use an old one and dont put anything flammable within three feet.

I haven't used a space heater for my baby, but I used one for myself last year.It was a space heater fan and some how the tiny little thing fell foward, with nothing or no one near it, and all of these sparks came shooting out and the lights in all the house started flickering. So I don't think I would trust one in your babies room without supervision. There are also these little magnetic covers that you can get to go over vents in your house that aren't needed, you can buy them at Bed Bath and Beyond.

I live near GR and I'd have to say I wouldn't do a space heater of any kind in his room. I would continue with the layers and I would definately do a lighter blanket at night. I would leave his room door open and shut any doors to rooms you aren't using to direct the heat better. We haven't turned on our furnace yet but I know it's coming. Good luck!

I would not recommend using a space heater in your childs room. I know there are quite a few response from mom's who have and thank God they have not had any bad luck with them. I would worry too much about the darn thing causing a fire in my childs room that I would not be able to sleep. They say not to leave space heaters unattended. I was told by my sons doctor not to worry about him sleeping in a cold room. Just layer him and cover with a blanket. We all actually sleep better in a cooler room. He will be fine! Good luck with your decision and I hope you can make it until Nov to crank the heat on! I can recommend a few thing too to keep your house warmer in the winter. Maybe you already do this, but you can buy plastic covers to put over your windows to keep air leaks out. You can buy draft guards to put under the door to outside where cold air may come in. Also, they say the heating bills aren't supposed to be as outrageously high as last winter. Last winter it had a lot to do with the hurricanes in the South. Good luck and best wishes!

Hi C.,
I also am dreading turning on the heat. I have a 8 month old and a 3 year old. We put a electric heater in my 8 month olds room. It does make me a little nervous but it keeps it warm in his room. We have one that has a little thermostat in it and kicks on if it gets below a certain temperature. I am happy with it. Hope this helps.

Hi C.,

I live in GR as well and completely understand wanting to wait awhile before you turn on the heat. I have used one and think it is okay. You just need to buy the right one.

Buy one that is cool to the touch, turns off automatically if tipped over, turns off automatically if it gets to hot, and make sure to get one that blows the heat, otherwise the whole room will not heat just the space around the heater will.

Put it on a dresser where your son can not reach it just to be extra safe, preferably where it can plug in behind the dresser and then he won't bother the cord either. If should be on a hard solid surface and make sure there are no curtains or things of that nature that will get in the way. That is just a precaution, if it does get cover by a curtain or blanket it is suppose to shut down but I would not rely 100% on any technology so just use common sense

The one I used was so sensative that it would turn itself off even if it got bumped and came off of one of the four leg corners. I purchased it at Walmart for about $20.00

Good luck,
D.

Hello!
I live in GR too. I have used a space heater in my childrens room since they were born during the colder months. I bought one that was cool to the touch and would turn off it got to the temperature its set at. My kids room was always pretty warm with that, and saved me on the heating bills. I keep the heater on my child's dresser, so its up high and out of their reach.

Good Luck with your decision!
