Sore near Mouth

My daughter has an area of irritataion near the corner of her mouth. She is currently 15 mos old. When she was an infant we were always batteling eczema. I feel she has outgrown that. This area around her mouth becomes irritated whenever she drools from teething or a cold. I constantly put neosporin and/or aquaphor on it to protect it. I have tried covering it with a dressing to no avail. What it worse is that she will pick at it. I am losing this battle. Anyone with experience in this? Any ideas? It is not a cold sore. Thank you for your time.

J.,
If it gets crusty/yellow and seems to have pus in it, it may be impetigo which is a bacterial infection. I think this requires a topical antibiotic to clear up. The mouth is a common area for this. It is caused by a staph/strep infection. Good luck!

If you have any Lansinoh left over from breastfeeding, it is great for overnight. I use it on the chapping my older son gets during the winter, during the school day (he doesn't put on chapstick and then he licks his dry lips, making it worse.) I think it's so effective that when I ran out, I bought more just for that even though I don't have babies anymore. It's like Aquaphor, but thicker and stickier and it really stays on overnight.

Have you tried Carmex? It should be able to holdup under the drooling. I would wipe the area dry first before applying.
What about Bert's Honey products. Honey is supposed to have healing qualities. I would use the lip balm.

Look up lip licker's dermtatitis and angular cheilitis. Sounds like either of these could be an issue without having to see the "sore". I would recommend you take her to the doc if you can't get it to clear with the aquaphor.

My daughter had the same thing. It is exactly what you think it is, rash caused by drool and irritation ( picking ) Do what I did for my daughter. After falling asleep, apply Vasoline. Lots of it. It will soak in during the night and make it feel better in the morning. this will heal when she stops drooling. My daughter's mouth looked raw. But, no it is perfect, clear and creamy skin.
This will pass!

My son had a nice nickel sized sore on his cheek for many months. It was the irritated drool spot from sucking his fingers. Just keep wiping it clean throughout the day and I liked the Lansinoh ointment because I knew if he ingested it, it was safe.

No great crisis, just a blemish. It'll clear up soon enough.

J.,
Maybe try putting chapstick on the area several times a day? We have done this for several areas that our kids have had eczema (like behind their knees & all around their lips). Our Dr. did not really recommend that and he had prescribed some special cream to apply to the areas, and that worked too. BUT, previously we had just applied Chapstick to the areas several times a day and that seemed to create a protective water barrier (from drool or lip licking). Good luck!!

Surprisingly when our son used to get chapped cheeks from drool/saliva (aquafor, vasoline, etc...not helping) our dr.'s office said hydrocortisone cream. Cleared it up in a jiff. Do it at night while your daughter is sleeping. Good luck.

J. - my fair skinned kids all battled eczema and various skin irritations. Try putting aquafor on after she falls asleep, as suggested. If that doesn't work go to your ped - sometimes the only thing that works is the prescription strength lotion for eczema.

My daughter had something similar when she was younger. I tried aquaphor for some time, and just trying too keep it dry. In frustration, I took her to the pediatrician. She told me it was contact dermatitis, and gave us something. I wish that I could remember. Maybe try that route if you need to. Good luck.
