Seeking Advice for Medicine to Put on Baby's Dry Skin -- Btw Nose and Mouth
My daughter has had a perpetual runny nose for the past 2 months. The skin between her nose and mouth is soo red and chapped. Any advice on what is safe to put on it? Keep in mind she puts everything in her mouth still. I have been using Lansinoh (I know that was safe when I was breastfeeding). I'd welcome any other suggestions!
So What Happened?™
Thank you for all your responses!! Based on the suggestions, I used Aquaphor and it did work quite well! I put that on her at night, and still used the Lansinoh during the day. She is all healed up! I really appreciate each of you taking the time to respond to my question!

I am Arbonne Independent consultant. We carry a line of baby skin care products that are pure, safe, and beneficial. The baby skin care products contain five key ingredients that relieve dryness and irritation: Retinyl Palmitate (vitamin A) which keeps the skin soft. It is a skin moisturizer, Tocopheryl Acetate (vitamin E) which protects the skin. It absorbs several layers down in the skin, Aloe - a true moisturizer which forms a barrier on the skin to prevent moisture loss, Orange Oil and Orange Blossom Oil - soothes skin with its anit-inflammatory properties, and cedarwood Oil - is also calms the skin and releases tension. I use the baby line of products on my children and have had much success with keeping their skin very well moisturized. I have several clients who have also started using the baby lotion on their babies and have seen an improvement in the skin. Arbonne has a 45 day return policy. If you would be interested in trying the product and are not happy with it, Arbonne will refund your money. I hope this helps and good luck.

Hi M.,
I have used Vitamin E Oil on my kids, grandkids and other children I have watched. Its natural and you can buy a big bottle at Bassets Health Store on Secor in Toledo, or I'm sure other health stores have it. The cost is around $9.00. But like I said its all natural and safe and it really works usually the first time applied. All you need to do is rub a little on the chapped areas. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Hi M.,
My name is L. Goins and I am the mother of four girls. I have recently been introduced to a water purification system that makes alkaline and acidic water. The water actually is barely different than normal tap water in appearance and taste. However, the acidic water has excellent healing abilities. It easily clears up rashes, cuts and infections...and it's just water!!!
I gave some acidic water to a friend of mine that had the exact same problem with her 6 year old son. After spraying a little water on his nose while he slept, the sore redness nearly cleared up overnight.
Please let me know if this appeals to you. I no longer use any kind of anti-biotic creams or anything on my kids - only the water. It cleans up cuts wonderfully, and I don't have to worry about my kids getting into anything that will hurt them.

My daughter had been getting dry skin around her mouth and I used Vaseline. It started to clear away the dryness and redness by the next day. You could also try a vaseline-like product called bag balm. Ask your local pharmacist about it. Just make sure to rub it into the skin well and I don't think it is toxic.

I use diaper rash cream on my dd's face. She gets really chapped cheeks and she constantly chews on her bottom lip. We use either the clear Desitin or Balmex. It really works wonders! You don't need a ton, just a little tiny dab. It protects their skin while soothing. I have Aquaphor, but honestly the diaper rash cream works just as well. And it's something you probably already have. If you're worried about her getting it in her mouth, try using it at night before she goes to bed. That way she won't get it in her mouth.

A friend on mine recently told me about virgin coconut oil. It has done wonders for my son. His dry face and even diaper rash. It seems to heal the skin very quickly. I found it at Walmart for around $4 for 16oz. Even with the worst of skin conditions the only complaint form my son has been that it is cold when it goes on. It is in solid form and melts when it touches the skin. Hope this helps.

Try virgin coconut oil, which you can buy in almost any health food store. It's ideal for all skin conditions. It has natural antimicrobial and antibiotic properties, and it will usually heal lesions within days. It's obviously safe to eat, since it's a cooking oil!
You'll be so impressed, you'll want to use it too. Think of the tropical women with smooth skin and smooth, shiny hair. In their native cultures, they use pure, virgin coconut oil on their skin and hair regularly.
If you try it, let us know how it works for you!
Also, go to the library and look for the book, "The Coconut Oil Miracle," by Bruce Fife, C.N., N.D.
Good luck!

Try using some kind of moisturizing lotion specifically for babies. I use "Renew" which was recommended by my boys' allergist but not over the counter. It works great on eczema. I use a barrier over the lotion such as Aquaphor. I put this on every night and sometimes in the morning with my little ones. It helps protect the skin from the excessive runny nose.

The Lansinoh is great...I know I used it for a ton of things and still do occasionally. Vaseline works well and Aquaphor would be another to try. If it doesn't go away you may need to see the doc and get a Rx ointment. It may be empatigo (sp?) and need an antibiotic or she may have eczema. My daughter has dealt with that around her ears and the Rx clears it up immediately.

Auquaphor works well (brand name works better than off brand for some reason). The best thing I have tried is creamy vaseline from Dollar General it works for chapped cheeks as well as chapped noses from colds. Lansinoh is available over the counter at the local drug store. That's probably the best ointment you will find for chapped lips. I still use it even though I haven't produced milk for a few years.
You can try a lip balm, but it won't sink into the skin or stay-put after baby sucks on toys or her fingers as well as lansinoh.

I used good old fashioned Neosporin ointment and cream for almost everything like this for my daughter. The ointment would be better here versus the cream which absorbs straight into the skin. It does not hurt to use it on yourself as well and it never hurt my daughter or me with our sensitive skin no matter where I used it. She is now a bouncy 9 year old and goes straight for it if she needs it. As a bonus there is no flavor or smell.

Hi M.,
I use Vanicream on my sking beause I have allergies and have to be careful. It has no preservatives, scent or lanolin in it. I even use it on my lips because chap sticks seem to only make them worse. I especially use it at bedtime. My dermatologist recommended it. They use it to formulate salves at the drugstore and I had to ask at the pharmacy for it. I got a big pump jar for $14.00 or so. I got it at War-Mart.
When my son was little the pediatrician recommended Aquaphor when he had skin problems. It seems to be very water-proof.
Hope one of those things works.
