Single Umbilical Artery and Short Long Bones

Has anyone else been diagnosed with SUA and short long bones? We are waiting for our Amnio test to come back but are anxious to hear other stories. Baby's limbs are 2 weeks behind gestational age (legs 2 weeks, arms 1.5 weeks). Had a previous partial placental abruption that has since healed. Will be 20 weeks tomorrow.

What can I do next?

doctors work with averages and percentages, they look at the math, not the family history. if everyone in your family is small staturated, then chances are good your baby is too. besides, no doctor can tell you exactly when you got pregnant, unless he was there himself, using his own equipment. sounds like the good doctor is just trying to make you anxious, so he can run more tests, and thus make more money off of you.

Hi C.,

Sorry to be the scary fly in the ointment, but SUA and short long bones found together can be associated with some chromosomal anomalies. These occur rarely, but your doctor will still want to follow closely to make sure the baby continues to develop normally. Doing an amniocentesis is a warranted followup in cases such as yours. If anything turns up in the testing or if other concerns develop along the way, your obstetric and pediatric team can be ready as early as possible to deal with possible health issues.

Fortunately, seeing both short leg and arm bones together is less of a concern than if only the arm bones are short. Both together seems to be associated more with possible shorter stature, and not with skeletal abnormalities. Also, it is important to know if you are older or younger than 35. If you are low risk, i.e. younger than 35, the results of the ultrasound are less likely to be associated with reasons for concern than if you're over 35.

As with anything else of a medical nature, I strongly recommend that you speak to your doctor about this. He or she has the medical knowledge and understanding to explain to you what the issues are. If your doctor is always trying to rush out, you have the right to stop him/her and demand answers. If you're not happy with your doctor's willingness to spend appropriate time with you, consider finding a doctor who will. (I know -- not something your really want to do in the middle of your pregnancy!)

Good luck -- I hope everything turns out to be just fine. The odds are on your side. Try not to worry until you get the results of the cytogenetic testing (from the amniocentesis). Stress isn't good for a developing baby. At this point, whatever is, is, and there may not be much you can do about it, anyway.

A routine ultrasound around 32 weeks showed my son's limbs measuring 2 weeks behind also. They sent me to have a more detailed ultrasound done at the perinatal specialist and everything else looked good so they said he was probably fine would just be short. My husband and I are not tall so we wouldn't expect our children to be either. They did want me to have weekly fetal monitoring done until the end of my pregnancy to be safe, which I felt was just them trying to milk my insurance for more money, but I did it because of my "advanced maternal age" (I'm 37) making me "high risk" it was peace of mind for me. Anyway my son was born 4 months ago totally healthy and his arms and legs look perfectly normal. Hopefully your tests come out good and try not to worry too much, I stressed myself out over it and it turned out to be fine.

My now 9 year old had a SUA. Lots of worry - but a perfectly healthy boy with above average intelligence. He reads at about a 9th grade level. I honestly wouldn't worry about the short long bones. Things can change SO much. I remember my boy's legs measured short, but by the time he was born, he was fine. Now, he's a little taller than the average 9 year old boy.

My sister had this diagnosis, single umbilical Artery, and short long bones. My perfect, healthy niece will be 3 in July. I think doctors have so much information with pregnancies these days and not all of it means something. I know it is hard, but try not to worry too much. My niece is just fine.

I agree docs these day care more about money than the patient encourage c section than natural or rush natural birth till the poor mom tears so bad, I am so upset with the practice thus went to midwife instead n felt much much better birth standing up gravity helps make birth so easy.

Hi there, just a thought have u thought of eating gmo foods can be one of the causes? It has been researched that many animals fed with GMO foods causes lots of problems with health, allergies, fertility n many more I was rather shocked to discover this but when I look around today so many kids have weird allergies as well, animals that consume gmo foods become sensitive non gmo foods,

2 weeks doesn't seem that behind though...one question do u eat a lot of processed foods like package foods? those have less nutrition in them and more gmo ingredients in it, also try eating organic eggs...it will give you very good nutrition for you and your baby eat soft boil organic eggs the nutrition are more dense this may help your problem, I know docs here say no to partial raw eggs but in fact organic free range eggs have unlikely salmonella as compared to cheap eggs as the cheaper eggs the chickens are all caged up and are stressed thus infected with salmonella.

I really believe it's really crucial to eat organic food especially while you are pregnant n home cooked foods, too many foods are modified and gmo today it's scary, why I say eating organic is good is cause from my pregnancy been eating organic and home cooked food little sugar intake n sodium, 2 soft book organic eggs daily , n I often ate sushi as well, my pregnancy was very healthy baby and I, am thankful to god as well,

My midwife also mentioned that when we. Eat high nutritious foods cases of complication will be cut down or none, thus i wish for you to have everything normal, right now they scan that it might be that but
You can change your diet as well to improve it...

No offense in anything I say ok..but in the olden days everyone ate more balance and no process foods, not so many vaccines kids and people are way healthier and lived longer today I see so many birth complications especially in the us it's mainly the diet that is the cause of this as I seen from other countries there are less problems also the hospital uses lots of drugs arle induction of birth that also causes birth issues.

I believe in eating natural wholesome foods that helps our body repair cells and cure any desease or prevent it from happening, my second baby was born in my own bath tub via midwife feels so much better than in the hospital birthing in an upright position.

Anyways I pray for you to have the test turn out normal ...pray for a miracle and eat healthy ok? Avoid process foods at all cost eat lots of veges n fruits and organic as often as possible, your pregnancy will be great it really is true as I have experience it myself and feel great, some of my friends who eat like that feel great as well.

Take care there ok I wish you all the best n just sharing with u how I feel about the food industry today I would like to see everyone have healthy babies n feel good mom, it seriously no fun to have a child that feels unwell as we suffer with them too...

I used to be a sickly child, thus later in life I ate very healthy n my body became renew thus feel great n with two healthy kids both which motor skills n development pretty advance, second child is even faster since I ate so many fish n eggs, she got great nutrition throughout the pregnancy n I nursing her still at 6 months plan to do so till she 2 years as I did with my 1st born.

Ok god bless n pray that all will be good for you I always feel for moms and their baby or anyone in general as I wish well for all take care there gal.
