Shy Child - Northville,MI

Hello,

I could use some help. I was wondering if any other moms have ever dealt with this. My oldest daughter, who just turned 4 years old, acts shy only when my husband and I are around. She's been in daycare since she was 8 weeks old. Her teacher says she is a social butterfly when we are not there, as soon as we (my husband or I ) pick her up from school she will not say bye to her friends or her teachers. She latches on us, and does not speak a word. She is a confident girl, and attends ballet class with no problem. However, she will not speak to anyone when I'm around. She has gotten better, and will nod when people ask her questions. She is also getting more comfortable with family members. If anyone has any ideas, I would welcome them.

What can I do next?

Hi J., A friend of mines daughter is the same way, exact situation. The teacher said it was because she is in daycare all day and when the parents are around she doesn't want to let go. I just thought I would let you know. Good luck.

My son is 3 1/2 and does the same thing. Just don't push too hard, and I am sure since she is so social at other times, it is just a stage and will pass. I will be looking at what others post for ideas as well. But, just wanted to let you know that my son does the exact same thing.

J. - I almost wonder if this is more 'Show' for you and the husband? Is there anything you can think of that may have occurred to have her start this? (Was she embarrassed or made to feel insecure somehow? Has it been happening all the time or did it recently start - if it's a recent thing, think back to what caused it and address it.)

My son is very shy around everyone else - but talks to the adults as he relates better to them. We do not have many small kids in our neighborhood, and at school, if his feelings are hurt (there is one boy bullying him so I have informed the teacher) - he sits alone.

I am working on it to help him overcome his feelings and role playing for him to be more forthcoming with others (especially the bully.).
