Seeking Someone to Watch Our Son When I Go into Labor. Who Do I Call?

My husband and I moved into the area 6 weeks ago. We don't know many people here and our families are out of state. I am due 1/31 and am trying to figure out who is going to watch our 2 year old when I go into labor with our second baby. I am scared about doing labor on my own without my husband there!

I interviewed a post partum doula and she does provide child care services. She would be willing to come over and care for our son. She charges $25/hour for day time and $35/hour for evening/night hours. I am scared of how much this might cost us when it is all said with and done. Any other suggestions of who I can contact besides a doula?

We have my husband's mom on call but the drive up here will be 10 hours --bearing the road and weather cooperate! So cannot rely on her as we are not certain when she can make it.

Thanks in advance!!

What can I do next?

My suggestion is to get to know your neighbor moms really well...and do it quickly. Chances are, if they are friendly and become fast friends with you,...they would be willing to step-up to the challenge to help you out in Jan.

Give them a holiday cookie plate, breads, etc...whatever it takes to break the ice and start off on the right foot. Even offer to take their kids for an afternoon for a play date, so that they can perhaps get some shopping done, see a movie, etc. That way, when mid January comes and you ask them for a favor, they will be more inclinded to help you out.

Good luck,..and CONGRATS!!!

First off let me say that this is an insane amount of money! I do childcare for a friend of mine and she pays $20/day.

My suggestion is to get involved in a mom's club. Most cities have a chapter. www.momsclub.org/links.html

I would recommend getting to know mom's close to you. Maybe there will be one or more moms that would be willing and able to care for your son when you're in labor. It would be much cheaper that way and if you get to know these moms it would be someone that your son would be comfortable being around while you're not there.

Congratulations and good luck.

There are drop-in Child Care Resources like Kids Time in Coon Rapids ###-###-#### or Club Kid in Edina ###-###-####. During the day these centers are like daycare centers that charge by the hour. I know someone who has used their service and dropped off her kid while she ran errands and thought it was fine. Nighttime may be tricky so I would recommend contacting your local parish (if you belong to one) to see if they can recommend a babysitting service...good luck!

Hi First I just wanted to say congrad on the second child!!!!! Second, I've thrown it out there before If you need a sitter I might be able to help you with that. I have a six year old daughter and she would love it if she could help play mommie. So if your interested shot me an email. I can get you all of my References and contact numbers so you may research me if you like. But if that scares you I agree with the other moms try mom choices. There reasonably. That Doula is really way over prices not to say that she's not wonderful. But if there charging that much she better be a Mary Poppins!!!!!!!!!!!
